Everyday driving results in a better review. I've watched a couple Seal Performance AWD reviewers push the Performance version and then criticize its performance. That's fine if you're reviewing for track work or the like. Near pointless for every day and even spirited (within the law) driving. Not sure either how useful the dynamic suspension is on the Performance. Seems at best it may be a slight improvement - and so it should, I guess. I'm still deciding between the Premium and Performance versions. 10k saving is quite substantial. Only 6k in the UK, but the base price over there is well above what we pay here. I certainly don't need the power increase from 230kw to 390kw, but I've owned 3 Subaru AWD (including a 2000 WRX) vehicles and a Mazda CX-7 Diesel, so like the advantages of AWD in "normal" driving. Still haven't ruled out a M3 either. Decisions, decisions... Waiting to test both Seals here in Hobart. Small market so not high priority to have demos on tap at the moment
@vasil7410 Жыл бұрын
@@Paul-ow9dd You are right, you are unlikely to utilise the full potential of the Performance model most of the time. However, not that long ago, you'd have to spend north of $200,000 on a Mercedes, BMW or Porsche to get this kind of performance, so I couldn't help myself. The Seal Performance is a bargain. BTW, I've already clocked my car at 3.7 from 0-100km/h, better than manufacturer claims.

Thanks for the video Tom. I understand that the ADAS systems are required for 2023 NCAP five star approval. However, I don't think some of these systems in the Seal work at all, it's not just the problem that they are too sensitive or intrusive. The systems I have tested so far are the lane keep assist and lane departure assist. I tried to drive with everything turned on as per default and they simply just don't work as intended, and the intervention appears to be random, as you noted in your video. I also tried to use autopilot and the car kept on attempting to drive me off the road as soon as the road had a curve. It would therefore seem that the lane detection algorithms in the car simply don't work. This would explain all of the problems above.
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
Having owned a Tesla for many years and driven many press cars, these lane centring features are mostly only Level 2 autonomy which means there is no way I would let the car steer for me. They are intended to be an aid only and if treated as such the ICC will work just fine for long drives - I’ve experienced it in the Atto 3 from Sydney to Melbourne and return 👍 I’ll demonstrate in a future uncut end to end freeway drive shortly on ICC in the Seal

The tesla highland autopilot handled the drive from Killarney Heights over Roseville Bridge all the way until the acute left turn onto clive Street on the way back to the dealership. The seal was all over the place near Alexandria. Hence my comments regarding buying the dynamic over the premium. The seal is worth 50k. If you go over 60k, get the tesla with properly calibrated autonomoy software. Stalks, Android auto and faux leather are legacy upgrades and worth didly squat compared to tesla software.

We have had our Atto 3 for just over a year and we were pretty happy. However, and in the last month or so a software update changed all the sounds to be much louder and more annoying. It no longer seems to honor the setting to only vibrate and not beep when it thinks you touch a line. Also, some sounds like cruise control disengaging were removed 🤷♂️. The traffic sign recognition has never worked properly. Specifically it never worked for three digit speeds and sometime displays an undocumented error symbol.
@vasil7410 Жыл бұрын
I think BYD are going to be put under a lot more pressure in Australia to fix problems, now that Seal owners are in the mix. Not only is spending $70,000 on a car a fair bit of money, many Seal owners are going to be past or current Tesla owners, so they will have a very high expectations. Tesla has spoilt us with their OTA updates and have set a new benchmark for the auto industry. The rest of the pack have to step up. I find the speed detection amazingly accurate when it sees a sign. The issue is that it doesn't realise the change when you turn off one road onto another. (Eg from a 20km/h car park onto a 60km/h main road) If they can integrate the GPS data into the TRS, then this feature will be excellent.
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
That would be ideal to have at least two data sets
@vasil7410 Жыл бұрын
I agree about GPS and map data. There are too many instances where signage alone is not enough. But it's hard to know which "instruction" should take precedence. We take for granted the experience and "intuition" it sometimes requires to figure out what speed we should be travelling at.

Totally Agree Mork. The system actually works well in China because they use Chinese Gaode Map system with very detailed roads data, it can even include navigation info in the Hud. However in Australia the map data is a bit lacking. I hope BYD can purchase more detailed road data.

The speed setting could use a threshold before it starts flashing/chiming in, not a 1 over the speed limit.I didn't see any "trucks only" on those 40 signs, so not sure if BYD's interpretation is going to be any more flexible than the cops if they tag you there. 50 when otherwise unsigned. :) Personally the most distracting feature misfiring in the Dolphin is the cross traffic & collision avoidance alert/braking. That thing goes off when I am already coming to a stop, in narrow roads after I pass a parked car, in double turning lanes, and a few other false positive situations.

I had an Atto 3 hire car for a week. I liked the Driver display on Dark Mode and the Infotainment Screen on Light Mode (particularly when using the Maps). Unfortunately, I couldn't work out how to set the mode of the two screens independently (suspect you can't?). During one drive, I did have a Dark driver display and Light infotainment screen at the same time (software glitch perhaps?). Sadly, it reverted to normal (both screens the same) when I next started the car, but it was good while it lasted.

Unfortunately, @Zelig you can't have one screen on light and the other on dark. What you experienced was a software glitch. We experienced the same until we restarted the vehicle and then both screens were the same. Would be great to have each screen lit differently. Should be a simple software addition. Generally, I keep the main screen on light, but have reduced the brightness to 15%. Of a nighttime I let it default to dark. But I wish the navigation map was able to be left in light mode when using dark mode. I find the map nearly impossible to read in dark mode. Latest v1.7 hasn't added independent screen light mode settings. It has changed the pedestrian warning. It's no longer an audible tone, Now, it sounds like the sound of the brake pads on the rotors when you press the brake at extremely low speed. Weird "scrapy" sound to use instead of the tone they had, almost like there is some fault with the noise generator. Not documented in the changelog. It seems a lot of changes haven't made it to the info screen when downloading the update - or after the update has been applied - Can't remember.

lane keeping assist is dangerous. On a long drive my cars habit of nudging the steering makes it feel as if you have either hit something ( a kerb or a verge) pushing the wheel or that something on the cars steering joints is wrong - this even when I am within the lines - this leads to major driver fatigue even on short journeys. The car does make mistakes so you have to steer it but you are also fighting against it - blooming awful and very exhausting. luckily my car allows this to stay off without resetting each time - this reduces fatigue both on me and the steering joints.

@vasil7410 Жыл бұрын
The Seal roof is definitely better than the Telsa roof for heat rejection. I've had the car for over a week in the middle of summer and no need for the shade screens. The Tesla roof, on the other hand is not useable in a hot climate, IMO. I have helped fix my Model 3 by installing ceramic tint on the back half of the roof (along with the integrated rear window, of course) but I am still installing the shade screen on the front half during summer. The tint installer advised me that tinting the front half of the roof would make little difference to the overall heat rejection.

"less than impressed" is a bit harsh. He later states that it's a fine compromise. Also remember that those sine waves are an extreme scenario that are exaggerated to what you'd typically encounter
@bandicoot2016 Жыл бұрын
@jspanga Nah, you're just straight out wrong. His initial reaction at 18:20 is "yeah, that's pretty bouncy". Literally, as he's bouncing up and down with the movement of the car. He then goes on to reference the difference of the Kia EV6 with local suspension tune and the Hyundai 5 without local tune. The difference between the 2 is substantial and important if you travel outside of Aus cities. At 19:55 he goes on to state that " it's a tiny bit sloppy"
@vasil7410 Жыл бұрын
I noticed in my own Seal Performance, the bouncing over bumpy roads just about disappears above a certain speed. This gives the impression that the car is adjusting its active dampers to suit the speed. If so, it means they can further tune the suspension with a software update. BTW, only the Performance variant comes with active dampers.

It seems that BYD software hasn’t been well developed and the dysfunctional safety features, as well as the intrusive noises, would be somewhat more than annoying (for me) in driving this car. The BYD Seal seems excellent in so many ways, but software implementation presents as poorly designed, tokenistically implemented and useless in effect, and very distracting. Will BYD fix it? I note another comment said a software update for an Atto made it noisier!

Reliability can only be commented on retrospectively. Tesla was asked the same question when they first came onto the scene and it’s through their excellent service that they’ve proven themselves over the years. All of us BYD owners are now in that same early adopter phase and I guess time will tell …
@Peter-vn8ue Жыл бұрын
It's a minor daily inconvenience that an OTA software update will hopefully fix. As Tom demonstrates, the vehicle with the settings changed, drives along the road with no major issues. As an Atto 3 owner I have my settings set so the the LKA just vibrates the steering wheel if you move out of the lane and have the traffic recognition setting set so it just flashes if you go over the speed limit. The amount of hysteria around the ADAS system in the BYD Seal is a bit over the top, in my opinion, and usually is magnified by non BYD owners. I'm sure by the time my BYD seal performance model arrives in late February, early March, these issues would have been addressed. Like all new vehicles, there is a learning curve period to understand how all the features work and setting your personal preferences if the vehicle allows you to customise the settings.
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
Well said 🙏 Looking forward to seeing how the software develops as time goes on
@vasil7410 Жыл бұрын
Definitely needs to be kept in perspective, the Seal is fundamentally a great car. But as a Seal Performance owner already, I'd rather problems are fixed sooner rather than later. I have also noted the Atto 3 ADAS systems and settings are not quite the same as the Seal. This may be because the Seal gained it's five star NCAP rating under 2023 rules, which are stricter.

Reducing the nagging ADAS alerts and false positives should be addressed by BYD ASAP, but turning these systems off should be done with caution as they are there for the time a driver makes potentially a serious mistake or due to inattention or simply just bad luck. We ALL have this potential, and I think all of us have had near misses (or worse) when driving. We all have the potential to fall asleep or suffer some sort of "recoverable" medical episode. Any of these systems could save the day for a driver. But I agree the system used in the Seal (and similar in the Atto 3) needs a lot of tweaking. BYD need to get it right ASAP so drivers (and I'm one of them) don't need to consider turning these systems off before each drive. We're finding with the Atto 3 that the bumper bar sensors seem to work sometimes and not others. Not sure if this is poor hardware or a software issue. Will be interesting to hear if the Seal is similar. Lane Assist has scared my wife a few times as it falsely tries to correct where she is in the lane, urgently trying to steer the car away from a wrongly perceived threat, such as thinking she is going to mow down a pedestrian walking on the side of the road. The traffic speed sign recognition is next to useless and almost constantly flashing in the driver display. It can think you're still in a 40 or 50 zone well after you've moved into a different speed zone. At least you can turn the sound off. It activates at 1kph over the limit, which is annoyingly silly. 5kph over as a minimum would be more realistic.

Agreed - with the compromise demonstrated in this video, I’m currently not touching the ADAS settings as I can live with it until the software update. Good suggestion with the sensors - I’ll do a test in a future vid
@vasil7410 Жыл бұрын
The problem I find is that the lane departure and lane keep assistance features fail to provide any benefit at all, even if you leave them enabled. The sudden jerking of the steering wheel during lane keep assistance, in particular, is far more dangerous left on than disabled. BYD will have to make improvements, there is no way Seal owners are going to accept the way they work currently.

Hang on. So you get 5 star safety rating with this system. But then you're getting a future OTA to keep these systems disabled if you wish. And you still retain the 5 star rating afterwards? I hope Ioniq cars get the same update. Seems like an easy hack to get 5 stars if you address the problems after securing the rating that isn't retroactively downgraded? I know nothing about safety ratings of course.
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
Yeah I hear you and it seems to be the workaround because the 5 star is awarded at the time of market release with no ongoing review. A lot of cars on our roads currently likely wouldn’t pass the 2023 standards that the BYD Seal and Dolphin were subject to, to achieve 5*
