Immigrating is such a rollercoaster. I’m now Canadian and that was enough of a rigmarole. But yes definitely privileged to be able to take this path. Nova Scotia is gorgeous; I was lucky to be invited to sail on a 48’ along the Nova Scotian coast back in 1985 when I was 19. The owner and his mate and us 7 teenage newbies. We took a week along by Chester, Lunenburg, Bridgewater and then sailed up to Halifax. I haven’t sailed since but am sorely tempted to get involved somehow again since stumbling across your amazing and fascinating journey! I’m on the other coast now, Tofino, which is also a gem of Canada. Fair winds!

I assume you will be spending a lot of time sailing around the US for the next several years. As a green card holder (aka Lawful Permanent Resident) Sophie will need to spend most of her time in the United States. She should not stay out of the US for more than six months at a time and she should spend more time in the US than out of it. There are ways to avoid these requirements for awhile but they will delay eligibility for citizenship. Ah, the video just answered the question.

Just curious why you need a Green Card instead of just a visa. Is it because you are a KZbinr ??

No it is because of Ryan being an American citizen and the nomadic nature of our lives and work, as well as the fact that we have an ongoing relationship, made me an “immigration risk” (their word) and I was denied an non-immigrant visa. Because the denial is on my permanent record and unappealable, our only route left was in fact, immigration. Let’s just say, it’s been a journey.

You’re moving to the us? Why? Why would an European want to live in a developing country?
@RyanSophieSailing2 жыл бұрын
It’s a long story… but I was once denied a US tourist visa that I needed to sail into the country, because they were “afraid” that I wouldn’t leave. I was marked an “immigration risk” (it’s called “214b” in official language). My visa waiver (my ESTA, the electronic travel authorization) was revoked that day, and there is no appeal possible. The 214b denial is on my permanent record, making it impossible to enter the US as a tourist again. So we decided we would actually immigrate and apply for a green card. And when you are the life partner of an American citizen, with all his family and community there, it is heartbreaking not being able to enter the country for so long (it was 4 years since the last time I flew in to the US)
@juanvalle2192 жыл бұрын
By all accounts for what you see in the news I think you were doing it all wrong. You should have had sailed to somewhere around Matamoros, Mexico. From there cross the border and declare asylum seeker. A piece of advice learn some Spanish lingo, like, " hola to soy Sofia". French I don't think is going to get you too far.

I also have a lot of privileges. I have the "right" passports, an Anglo-Saxon-sounding name, enough money to pay for lawyers and fees (it cost us over $10000 to get to this point), the flexibility to wait for my turn, and a safe place to do that from. Not everyone is as lucky as I am, and that's unfair too. I'll let anyone fleeing life-threatening situations get ahead of me any time, even if it means I have to wait years.

Actually as a U.S cross border tax lawyer it’s beyond my comprehension why a French national would want a US green card. The only reason I can think why you would is because Ryan is worth a whole lot of money and needs the US estate tax unlimited marital deduction. Otherwise I can’t imagine why you would want a US green card. I’d like to get rid of my blue passport. Of course nothing contained in this or any other post on this site is any form of legal advice.
@RyanSophieSailing2 жыл бұрын
Then you don’t know much about immigration law. A few years ago, I was denied a tourist visa because Ryan being my partner, they were afraid we would get married and stay in the country. My travel authorization was revoked and the denial under “214b” got on my permanent record, meaning my chances to get a non-immigrant visa were close to none under our current circumstances. Our best chance for me to be able to enter the country again? The immigration path. So there you go. We have a lot of family here that I was not able to meet in about four years. It’s not about money (cause if anything, this process drained us financially).
