Imo it’s still early so ppl will prob find something labbing. Me personally found out that d-tilt to up air at around 113% is a kill confirm on some characters. You basically have to be frame perfect while doing it though cause he/she is slow. Also if ur opponent is on the top battlefield platform, you can up-b into side-b and it can also kill at spike percentages.

Byleth is kinda a mix of all the Fire Emblem characters. They have projectiles like Robin or Corrin, big range like Marth and Lucina and insane killing power like Ike, Roy, Chrom and Ike. They have the potential of being a very powerful character under the right hands!

Byleth has one projectile attack with 2 variations. It's not much of a projectile game so much as just another option to add pressure or fight back against the never ending zone spammers. Nothing like Robin's arsenal. I agree with the spacing comparison to Marth though since Byleth does have reach and is rewarded for tippers on certain attacks. As for killing power, Byleth hits harder than any of the other FE cast currently, which is probably another reason why their movement speed is almost non-existent. Byleth is nothing like the other FE cast, which is a huge relief for someone like me who loves that franchise, but is also sick of the Marth echo fighters.

I actually disagree with this a little bit. You definitely need to space her moves properly to play optimally, and new players tend to spam smash attacks - and oh boiiiii, F-smash is sooo punishable if not done appropriately. her really good moves - F-air and B-air also have to be timed to hit shorter opponents. I think this is good for people who have a little experience with Smash and want to improve on spacing, or just want to have fun. I can see a lot of newcomers getting frustrated playing her lol

I feel like down smash is very important to mention, because even though her grab is awful, it still ensures the opponent cannot block recklessly. The shield damage is so insane, single charge arrow -> down smash breaks shield, forward or back air tipper -> down smash breaks shield, down air -> down smash breaks shield. Along with her down b basically being a ganon neutral-b in terms of killing power, anyone above 40% has to keep an eye of their shield at all times. This also synergizes well with her kit since the answer would be to jump a lot, but then Byleth gets to up-tilt, up-smash and up-air you more easily.

laogon09 Some issues though are that the down smash has to be charged to actually break the shield fully on top of being slow. Her down air while having nice pressure is just beyond slow and is just as easy to punish. Better for it to be used as a spike off stage rather than actually being used as a move to pressure shields with. Her Down B and charged neutral B should never land not be able to be used to successfully pressure a shield at higher skill brackets except for maybe doubles. Her shield pressure honestly comes from moves that are just too slow and punishable to justify. If anything is worth considering as decent shield pressure that’s practical to use, only her down smash comes to mind.

@@saintlucifer4131 The thing is that it doesn't have to be charged if you landed a tipper fair or bair recently, which happens quite often, it has basically the shield breaking power or lucina's neutral b. The point being that while it won't happen so often at high level, the reason it doesn't happen is because the threat of it makes it a very bad idea to ever hold shield, which is good for Byleth since she wants to poke from midrange or hit airborne opponents with her up options. I don't think she's top tier or anything, just that most top players I watched don't seem to talk about it nearly as much as I think they should considering how well it suits her kit.

It's interesting how Sakurai managed to represent the gameplay of the franchise properly with only Robin and Byleth, Robin represent resource management on the battlefield and spamming magic cuz magic is good Byleth represent the more tactical part of slowly getting your opponent to play into your hands and your most powerful moves are axe and lance attacks because those two weapon types were by far the 2 best until 3 houses came along and made bows good Also i like that Byleth is as ridiculously strong as they say they are in 3 houses

@@SomeRandomDude821 you've heard wrong, 3 Houses is the first time axes and lances are more balanced, being closer to swords now and bows are just super good in general now, until now it's always been that bows were the worst cuz they couldn't counter at close range and were locked to 2 range (with a few exceptions here and there), swords were the second worst cuz the only ranged swords that existed were super limited levin swords while lance and axe users could just spam throwing axes and javelins there's a reason why cavalry and flying classes are considered the by far best classes out there cuz they more often than not have access to lances and sometimes axes on top of having more movement than other classes, especially the fliers who can ignore terrain (and in the older games those two types were even better because of the rescuing mechanics and the canto ability)

Typically a "sword character" in smash refers to a character that has long totally disjointed moves. It's usually a weapon because that makes the most physical sense for that much disjoint. Starting from Smash 64 and Melee, the first examples of these kind of hitboxes were characters with swords like Link, and then Marth and Roy etc. The Belmont's are Zoners that have low mobility, projectiles and sword Aerials, tilts, and smash attacks which means they are hybrid Swordie/Projectile characters just like Link. So regardless of whatever artistic model/animation the long, completely disjointed moves happen to have, they function identically to a sword. And since the first of these archetypes used swords, we refer to them as "Swordies."

You can also do UP+B > immediately or spam jump right after UP B animation to FOOT STOOL (while having the stick leaning to the left if opponent is on the right of the screen or vise versa) > DOWN AIR. I think you can DI to avoid being down aired, haven't tested, yet.

Hey ZeRo, not sure if you'll read this, but if your hanging onto the ledge, and fast fall without inputting any direction left or right, you can up b and grapple the side of the stage (you can do this normally but it only happens when you are too low to grab the ledge itself); I'm not very good at the game but this could open up more options for Byleth when your being edge-guarded.

Hey ZeRo, me again. Quick note about the down-b. You actually have super armor for a bit. The second Byleth starts swinging is when super armor activates. However, you can jump over Byleth, like just over the head, during the charge-up.

Just one thing to bring up about dtilt. You had mentioned dtilt at low percents as a great combo starter but I feel as though it should get some mention at higher percents: at around 110%, the dtilt will pop up above Byleth's head (as it pushes them above and towards you) making uair a great tech catch, nearly a kill confirm with little reaction time if you are fast enough. Other then that great and informative video ZeRo. Keep it up.

The kill options I've been defaulting to (if I'm struggling) in order of damage to kill Ryu (read: mid-weights) are: up tilt - 170% f-tilt - 160% rapid jab - 160% weak-hit fair - 160% neutral b 1 - 150% strong hit dash attack - 140% side-b - 130-140%? (I don't use side-b often) uncharged sour spot f-smash (roll in from ledge coverage) - 130% landing nair (don't get last hit) into dash attack - ~120% if started at center stage, since it sends toward ledge up-air - variable, usually around 120-130% tipper fair - 120% up smash - 110% tipper bair - 110% dair on stage [grounded] - 100-110% down-smash - 80-90% tipper f-smash - 50%+ at ledge, 40%+ if trying to read ledge jump or two-framing edit: I look at is as a sort of flow-chart, where more and more options kill the higher their percent goes. By the end, every move in Byleth's kit besides down tilt kills (back throw kills at ledge somewhere between 150%-170%, up-b is a trap I believe). Edit 2: To elaborate about up-b, it is an okay option if the opponent is not expecting it and they're off stage above you. If they are expecting it or you have trouble landing it consistently (which is common off-stage, since it auto-sends to ledge in certain positions), it will often mean giving up stage control for a risky inconsistent move when you're playing a character that's good at ledge trapping. On stage, up-b is garbage since you're putting yourself above your opponent for the same amount of damage you get for properly spacing a fair (remember, landing is Byleth's true Achilles' Heel). I don't think any of the up-b combos are true (except maybe the one on Donkey Kong) because of how easy it is to DI the move, so in the end any attempt to use it - whiff or success - on stage is worse than just pressuring with fair and up-air. Offstage you're more likely to kill with drag down nair (great edge guarding option, btw), drop down bair, or fair, and that's if you want to actually pressure their recovery rather than staying safe and pressuring ledge. My average kill% (total damage dealt/KOs) with Byleth is 112% right now, with about half my kills coming from aerials. This makes Byleth my second lowest average kill% (after Pokemon Trainer at 108%, which makes sense, it's my current main), beating out the rest of my top 10 (Ganon and Lucas at 115%, Marth at 125%, Pikachu at 127%, Sheik at 131%, Terry at 137%, Fox at 142%, and Young Link at 152%). Of course, some of that is me memeing and being terrible with technical characters while being decent at spacing (see Marth % vs. Fox %), but I seem to have less trouble killing with Byleth than most of the characters I've main'd.

2:08 I have already tried drag-down combos. More often than not I found the opponent launching to the side Byleth is facing. I think this is because his/her nair is slower than others, so dragging down opponents requires precise timing. I succeeded dragged down the opponent 1 out of 5 times. However, failing to completely drag-down opponents won’t hurt Byleth. I think nair was meant to be a spacing move if the opponent got too close. It can also be made a true combo if you use the lance afterwards since the opponent is usually launched to the side. Also if the opponent doesn’t tech or isn’t tripped, down-tilt makes a really good follow-up. Edit: my timing isn’t off because I mastered drag-down nair with other characters.

Probably a decent counterpick with the 0 to death against heavies, the crazy range against big bodied/slow characters, and easy edgeguard and ledgetrap options with medium risk but very high reward against characters with exploitable recoveries/ledge options. I could see her have a decent matchup against game&watch too with the up B similar to joker's to catch him after his up B and the high range to space around his shield without getting punished by up B spam.

Even though I was one of the people excited about Byleth in smash, I definitely have to admit that I wasn't a big fan of his playing style when I first tried them out. I actually main Lucina, so my type of gameplay is fast and aggressive, but Byleth being such a slow character really messed with me. Even though they are strong, they're pretty slow and that's very different from my usual playing style. Usually, I rely on fast characters and focus on weaker attacks mixed with faster combos, so I wasn't sure if I would end up liking Byleth after all, but after remembering that Byleth is actually a distance character, it actually helped me out a lot and when I went back to try the character, I did a lot better since I kept in mind that I should keep my distance against other opponents. You forgot about up B working like ZSS on the ledge. If you drop down and up special immediately byleth can grab an opponent and if they're past 40% it can even spike them off depending on DI. Obviously it'll only work if your opponent is at the ledge or on a platform but I've surprisingly got it off often.
