Great project, but always check with your local building dept. A neighbor who got tired of replacing his mailbox started something similar (single mailbox and paper box), but the city stopped by to let him know it was against code, specifically for the reason that within certain distance from the road, it has to be able to break away in case of an accident. He asked about others in the city and was told they were grandfathered in. Glad YT recommended your video, now subscribed !

I was going to say that if hit by a car as built the whole thing would fall right over but if required by code then this one has a built in "break-away" feature by not having much of a deep footing. LOL!

i personally would have liked to see smaller grout gaps between the veneers, but otherwise this is a very nice project that looks amazing and im sure you and your neighbors appreciate having an aesthetically pleasing mailbox that will likely last a significant amount of time!

Yeah no it will not. My grandfather lived on a corner. When building his house he had a dd crash into the utility pole and then the frame of the house. After that he built a rock wall. He has to repair it almost every single year. It just protected their house from being crashed into

I wanted to do something similar but was told I needed to have so much clearance to the road, and it MUST be a breakaway, to ensure no one gets hurt in case of accidently hitting your mailbox.

In this video, the US Postal Service guidelines for height are mentioned, but for anyone wanting to do something similar, be sure to check your locality's regulations. Many places require mailbox supports that break away on collision with motor vehicles -- the opposite of this!

Add a bigger parcel locker above it and the space between the mail boxes could b used as an anchor point for a roof that covers the mailboxes and the person that stands in front of it.

You missed getting stencils cut for the address numbers and painting the addresses on the boxes. But you can do that next week. We had our house done in Klinglehut Brick. This is brick veneer on plaster board. You install panels with brick already glued to it. Nails go into the house in the spaces for the grouting. Mortar the same as your individual brick facings.

Brent, great work as always. I built a brick base for a wood fired pizza oven at my old house. Brick laying, or cinder block laying, is very difficult and you’re right, the mortar dries quickly. Much faster than I liked, and I learned quickly to make smarter batches at a time until I got the hang of it

You have to be careful building mailboxes like these near a road. I saw a video where a homeowner got sick and tired of getting his mailbox knocked over so he decided to over engineer a new one using steel or concrete (can't remember) making it as strong as a tank. A little while later he found himself being sued by a driver who crashed into his mailbox. The driver claimed that the homeowner had rebuilt his mailbox unnecessarily strong which caused injury and considerable damage to his car. Turns out that you're not allowed to build obstacles that strong near a road because of the risk it poses to traffic. But I don't remember what State this was in.

I know the case your talking about but the driver lost the lawsuit because no law says how strong or weak your mailbox has to be. The only laws define how tall and where it can be. Also there is an electrical pole right behind it which is significantly stronger anyway. Some cities might have individual ordinances but like I said that electrical pole is significantly stronger.

You can pour in the concrete mix dry. Place the bags on top of the tamped gravel, slit open each bag, empty them out into the form, screed, add your vertical rebar (all the way down into the gravel), then mist the entire surface with water. In an hour, come back and mist again. An hour after that, switch to soaking the surface. Do that 2-3 more times, and your slab will be complete.

I'm not a mason either but a welder that did many jobs for an old time irish mason. Your masonry skills are more than acceptable. While putting up fire stairs for said mason at a catholic school the head priest asked me to redo the masonry outer walls of the church. Not a small job so i declined. The blocks were the fancy rough outer and were of poor quality. Although they were supposedly of high quality started to crumble and decompose. I try to go fieldstone whenever possible.

Dont like the Mailboxes themselves. but that is ok. the Wall was done well. Only thing Different I would have done. Was place some Conduit/pvc pipe inside. So Perhaps in the Future could easily run Electric to it and place a Light on Top either in Middle or do bit more and Run piping on both Ends and have two lights on top of it.

As a contractor, great job only I have some safety advice... Working in road reserves any digging and especially driving steel spikes into the ground could damage underground services, you'd be surprised how shallow some can be, even power cables! Take care ya'll

I can't be sure from just seeing the video, but it looks like you laid your blocks upside-down. Just so you know, the "fat" or "thick" side of cement blocks should be facing up to provide a wider platform for the mortar.

Neighbor had a single box constructed like this. Driver hit it one night and took them to court. Cost them 6 figures. Looks nice but not worth the liability. Exhibit 1 will be this video and all the comments questioning the safety of building a reinforced cinder block wall in the road right of way.

I must have missed something. What was the purpose of the weed barrier underneath the slab? And watering down concrete will weaken it considerably. What is the point? Why didn't you just lay a full brick pattern of your choice and top it with a cement cap that would overhang slightly .

@@icesphere4839 Well, he used quick drying concrete, and thats why I was concerned. I'm no pro, don't even know what caulk is. (Limestone powder?), its used to get lighter colour and is mixed with the concrete. I live on an old abandoned stonequarry, thats why I watch all kind of youtube vidz, lol. I liked the look of his work, me had to build similar for electricity, but left it "naked" without bricks. (Stone is what we use to build this with here in Croatia at sea). But now gonna do bricks instead, just loved it.

@@icesphere4839 Checked out caulking, lol. Nope, its to late for that now. Yeah, I got them 'caulkings' here in all tube Form combinations, from rubber to quick drying concrete. Made a hole in bedroom for a window 3m wide, 1m high, had to caulk it good. Especially on top where couple of gaps where left for pouring concrete in. Interesting caulking is name for wooden boats insulation/isolation filling also, we have them boats here as well.
