There probably were some in the dojo that had to be tired of getting their asses kicked by this blue belt and were happy that he finally got promoted.

Actually loved seeing Higinbotham using the same techniques repeatedly, always with strong, solid form, and nothing too fancy. Just shows the value of mastering the basics, and perhaps even more, the value of being comfortable on the bottom of the fight; he had no issues with being mounted. A very well deserved purple.

Fair points. I train both as well. Perhaps more Gi then No Gi these days, but my first handful of years I focused on No Gi. When I finally accepted the Gi into my training regiment, I saw immediate progression. I feel that Gi has a much broader submission arsenal, the gripping is amazing, the chokes (to me) triple that of No Gi, and sweeps come a bit easier. No Gi to me has more of a wrestlers pace, and feel. I guess in the end, it comes down to the wants and needs of the practitioner.

Very nice...Love the ear guards. 2 years after I started bjj (12 years ago) we had a newbie come in wearing these guards. We all used to playfully make fun of him. Now there are 4 people in the class with cauliflower ear!! Who's laughing now :D Also, he kicks everyone's ass now lol. I think you guys got the intensity right too......keeps those ears nice and flexible Very well done bud!! Congrats

If you have ever tried to hold a sweaty, slippery person in side control it is harder then if he were wearing the gi. To be able to hold a slippery person takes a lot of technique. No gi in some aspect is more technical than the gi. With that being said, i train both equally because friction and grips from the gi allow me to have better submission defense and escapes.
@brucemcgraw70144 жыл бұрын
Hey James I dont agree, being a blackbelt in bjj, my students train with the gi for a minimum of 2 years before they start training without the gi. By that time they have a solid grasp on the fundamentals. The transition to no gi techniques have already been implemented from gi training. This is extremely difficult for some of our new students to understand, especially if they have a wrestling background. But to even add to your point, a wrestler who starts without a gi are known to have somewhat of an advantage of those who start with the gi and transition to no gi. Depending on the individual, in my experience it has none both ways.

if you paste that into your browser, remove the spaces, and hit enter, you'll get a "page not found." When that happens, delete "%C2%AD" and hit enter. It's a post where Mr. Dean writes in depth what the demonstrations are for and how they work.

If I may, No Gi really isn’t apart of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; it is simply an extension of BJJ. There generally isn’t a syllabus testing system for No Gi, and in a lot of ways I think that - that is a good thing. No Gi submission grappling often ends up in a higher paced wrestling match with subs, and less technical experience is needed to defend. Training in the Gi not only adds 2 x's the amount of techniques, but the Gi is apart of the journey, and is apart of our lineage. #Traditions

Some say you're only as good as the people you train with. If you're a blue who spars with purple and brown belts on a regular basis, there comes a time when you stop getting your ass kicked by those who rank higher than you and you begin to kick ass.
