Random FYI... in this video, Jim is on bass, playing the same blue/white Precision he played with Buffalo Springfield on their Dec 1967 Beach Boys tour, and also on the abruptly-halted April 68 BS tour that fell apart the day after MLK was shot. At this point in time (of the above video), Jim was angry most of the time for being stuck on bass. The tour had already been booked, Randy had already left, and the band had not yet hired Tim to play bass. The only up side to the brief blip of tour time, was that only four band members had to be paid. But gigs were scarce and airplay wasn't happening. The writing was already on the wall for the band

My dad was a big fan of this band but like the petulant child I was i rebelled against the music he played for me growing up. Now that I'm the same age he was then (and had my head surgically removed from my arse) and I can see he had great taste. Cheers.

Thanks for posting. I loved this band. Along with NRPS and Graham Parsons, they introduced me to country-rock. Rusty Young's use of the pedal steel was amazing - getting that organ sound on 'Nobody's Fool' from 'Picking Up the Pieces' was great.

"Pickin' Up The Pieces" was their debut album and the single was like a memoir to the break up of Buffalo Springfield. Randy Meisner appeared on the album but left before the single was released due to conflicts with Richie Furay. Personnel: Richie Furay- Lead vocals and lead guitar/ Jim Messina- Bass and vocals/ George Grantham- Drums and vocals and of course Nathan Russell "Rusty" Young- pedal steel guitar.
@michaeld.mcclish5 жыл бұрын
I think George Grantham was never fully appreciated for all he offered, major vocals while drumming. This group's music was not only a new direction in rock, it was difficult and intricate. I remember buying the album when it came out, and I kept saying "their voices are so high" I also got all my degrees at CSUN, was in rock bands from 65-70, but switched to classical. Who would have known that Jim Messina would have been SOOOOO important as the years went by. I also have Lee Michael's first two albums, the first Jim Messina produced and I am sure he was the guitar player on it also. Memory Lane....also saw Linda Rondstadt in the CSUN(SFVSC) gym with the Burrito Bros.

Yes. This is the band that was backed by FM underground in San Francisco. During the 60. At the Monetary Pop Festival on the third day, they played right before Jimmy Hendrix. They were good. I can say this and stop, but that would only give you part of this story. I was there on that Sunday. To prove this, I will tell you something that was no gone over on the PBS special about this event. It is, of good luck or bad, only Poco can answer that. On that day one group could not make it. This pushed down alot of weight on Poco. They ended up doing a double set, that day. Only Poco, and us, the audience knew this. They handled it well. They must have been dead tired after that. Just a fact, that might get lost to history about the Poco. Dave in Sierra Vista, AZ.

? Poco didn't exist at the time of Monterey Pop. They formed in '69. Buffalo Springfield was there though, but they didn't perform right before the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

@Don Johnson Sorry, but I was there, and I saw them. The spelling of Poco changed though. I bought the album before the Monterey Pop Festival, because of hearing this song being played on FM underground radio stations. That is just the way it was. Dave in Sierra Vista AZ

I see yur a big Poco fan! My wife of 2+ years, who's also Julie, never heard of Poco before me and now she loves them! Last year we stayed in a yurt on a remote lake in upper Michigan with no other human around for miles. After a long days hike I started the camp fire. We ate and drank wine and the music of Poco echoed through the north woods for 2 hours! Great memory.

+chuckiea49 It is most likely Jim Messina. Meisner had left the band early in '69. From what I've found, Messina took over bass for a short time until Timothy Schmit joined in Sept., '69.

@60s70sVintageRock8 жыл бұрын
Erik Soer Messina is there, he and Richey Furay formed the band in 1968. Furay sings lead. I've checked several sources... Meisner quit in March '69 because of a despute with Furay and Messina... before 'Pickin' Up The Pieces' lp was released. This festival footage was from the end of June. Meisner was a part of Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band by then. So it's Messina, Furay, George Grantham and Rusty Young you see here.

Nothing, but Jim wanted to play his telecaster, not bass. He had to pick that back up when Randy abruptly left. It really hurt limited their live sound with only the steel guitar having to be playing all the lead parts.
@annettebell2101 Жыл бұрын
@@BobCowden Thank you for your reply. May I ask, "Who is Randy?"
@BobCowden Жыл бұрын
@@annettebell2101 Randy Meisner was the original bassist for Poco (later of the Stone Canyon Band and The Eagles). He left abruptly during the mixing of the first album (he felt excluded from the mixing process, Jim and Richie don't remember it quite like that). So for about half of 1969 they had to tour as a foursome with Jim taking over on the bass, leaving Rusty to play all the lead parts. Randy left by April, Tim Schmit joined the band in May, but didn't start performing with them until about September.
