Shimmy on take off shimmy upon landing. Replaced nose wheel tire and rim, shimmed scissor link and retightened scissor link bolts. No more shimmy! Feels so fine when landing not to feel a shimmy!

Great job on identifying the issue and sharing this with us. I have the same issue with my Piper Tomahawk PA38 112 and plan on replacing my scirror link bushings and bolts to tighten up the loose points for no more shimmy.

Great video! I just had this happen to me for the first time today with a student in the plane. It's good to have a video showing what's happening under the plane when this happens!

Thank you gor the video. Some of the old planes I fly do this. I have to pull back on the yoke until I slow to a crawl when i really just want to get in the brakes and get back to the pattern. Such a time waster missing intersections!

I’ve had this happen to me quite a few times in the 172S. Usually a bit of back pressure to lighten the load on the nosewheel until you’re slower is sufficient to stop that.

For what it’s worth, my K model did this too and once I put all the right shims in and made sure there was no play in the torque link , it took care of the problem. Also later on it started doing it again with everything tight I replaced the shimmy damper and problem solved. 👍🙋♂️🖖🏻

This just happened to me on my first solo flight and freaked me out. Thought I broke something so I stuck my phone out the window to see that the gear was still there.

It looks more like a caster shimmy (tire shimmy) than strut shimmy (structure shimmy) from the frequency point of view.

So is it a bad tire or wheel bearing because it only looks like it’s doing it when the weight is transferred to the nose wheel

Midrar tt The shimmy damper was serviced/rebuilt for the test the fix seemed to come as a result of a balanced front wheel and tire along with the scissor shims.

Can u make a video on how a shimmy damper works plz ? It'd be very interresting Thx for sharing very helpful To understand
@Kiddsworld662 жыл бұрын
A shimmer dampener is a hydraulic actuator that is bolted perpendicular to the nose landing gear usually, that acts as a shock absorber just like a strut would. To keep the NLG from doing what you just saw. So if your getting this kind of shimmy a maintenance action is most likely required. Be it a simple greasing, adding spacers/washers, or just simply loose hardware, but usually it is the shimmy dampener itself that had failed and is no longer doing it job, which consist of either new o-rings and a servicing of the dampener, or an overhaul of a complete new/serviceable shimmy dampener. Hope this helps! Been an A&P mechanic for 7 years!

Nice explanation well doen sir. But in the first part of the video it’s very evident that the nose strut is not good. It’s bounces a bit too much. Maybe system inside is a bit worn. Also you may put some more air in than the manual tells you to do. Check the oil level first . Having experience many wheel dances on these planes i came to a conclusion that. The hole reason they start to shimmy is the angle nose strut. That’s where it starts. If that is compressed to much the point of shimmy is nearer than fully extend. Also that strut has to slide in and out easily. Keep it clean. Obviously use the right type of tyre and pressure. Some models tyre are to square on the profile shape that’s no good for these planes. If a shimmy damper is installed check it for stiffness. Try to compare it with a new one. If that’s is not helpful get that play out of the ✂️. Good job and thanks.

Almost all the C-172s ive rented do this. I just keep backpressure until you need to turn off the runway. Yesterday I did a few touch and goes, 1 of them I felt that shimmy. Its extremely uncomfortable. I think you are right about the flaw in the C-172's nose gear design. I never felt this on a Piper Warrior.
