the soviets also had nuclear antiship weapons for taking out carrier groups. Oh and current day ICBM defense does still use nukes.

I don’t really feel like there is any appreciable difference between strategic and tactical when you are dropping hundreds of kilotons of megatons of nuke.

It was a different time, I guess, but it's kinda funny the idea that a "low intensity" nuclear conflict wouldn't escalate. Were these ever seriously considered for use or were they really just for decorating warehouses and "being scary?"

They thought that the guy that strike first might maybe scare the losing side and force them to surrender instead of escalating further, because that would mean the end of the world. It's not so crazy when you think about it. It's some kind of a chess game but with Armageddon stuff
