North and south nodes could have been explained better by indicating that the elliptical path of the moon around the earth is tilted by about 5.2 degrees. The orbital plane of the moon around the earth and the earth's equatorial plane intersect at a line which is called the line of nodes. If the moon's orbit is along the equatorial plane of earth, then we will have eclipses on every new and full moon days. The intersection nodes are called north node (Rahu) and south node (Kethu). The north and south nodes appear to move in the opposite direction of the movement of the moon. Next time, you go to a temple, look at the directions the planets in the navagraha shrine are facing. Venus (Sukran facing east), Mars (Sevvai facing south), Saturn (Sani facing west), and Jupiter (Guru facing north) are anchored in the center portion. They do not suggest inducing a moment about the sun since they are centered in the arrangement. Now look at the corner planets. Moon at southeast (left down) facing south, Mercury (Budhan at northeast (right down) facing east) appear to exert a clockwise moment round the sun. The two nodes North (Rahu at northwest (right up) facing south) and South (Kethu at southwest (left up) facing south) appear to exert a counterclockwise moment around the sun. This is to basically suggest that the north and south nodes are retrograde to the other planet movements. So the knowledge in our Hindu culture is ancient and well-founded in science. Most important fact is the creation of the nodes due to elliptic path of the moon around the earth. One learned pundit told me that when going around the navagraha nine times during worship one should do seven times clockwise and two times counterclockwise at the end (for the two nodes). Since it made total sense to me considering the retrograde movement of the nodes, I have been doing it ever since..
