An early muscle car. I think the 58 Delray (bottom trim level for that year) with the 348 was the first muscle car. If not that, then the 61 Biscayne with the 409.

@@vladtheimpala5532 Just to be difficult I will remind every one that Studebaker stuffed a Packard 352 into a Golden Hawk in1956 and the following year Sodge made the 1st factory hot rod the D 500. And if saw last weeks video Packard put a 12 cyl. in a base model business coupe, possibly the 1st muscle car. In the end I contend the GTO was the 1St muscle car, it begat the Chevelle, the 442, the Fairlane, the GTX etc. Just thought I'd stoke the fire a little bit! BTW this argument will rage forever and I respect all opinions, just so you know I'm not being a a hole. Well........
@vladtheimpala55323 жыл бұрын
@@richardrice40 Some people point to the Oldsmobile Rocket 88. It all depends on which definition you go by and your personal bias. I always thought that the definition of a muscle car was a full or mid sized car with minimal options built from the factory to go fast in a straight line and my bias leans towards Chevrolet as you may have noticed. I definitely don’t consider the Golden Hawk to be a muscle car as it’s the wrong size. The Dodge or the Packard might qualify. One reason (probably the main one) that most people think the GTO was the first muscle car is because those other cars came out before the term “muscle car” existed and the GTO did start a trend. John DeLorean stuck a large engine in a mid sized car which was against the rules. I’m sure you know the story about how he kept ordering Tempests that way for himself and then loaned them to executives who didn’t want to give them back. First he marketed it to them to get them to allow him to market it to the public.
@richardrice403 жыл бұрын
@@vladtheimpala5532 My bias does too. We could go on for ever, I will just say I don't agree with you but I respect your opinion. As car guys we can agree to disagree. I have to find a way to make it to the Gilmore museum while those Corvettes are still there. I’ve always thought that Corvette based Nomad should have gone into production. The Bel Air based tri five Nomads were cool though (55 is my favorite). I doubt that very many Corvette buyers would want a station wagon. I wish they had continued the sporty 2 door Nomads for a few more years and based it on the Impala or maybe the Chevelle after 66.

Hi, Lou! Holy cow, this is just Episode 2 and already I feel that I would have to devote a whole day (maybe two or more) just to cover the entire museum! I typically spend a good six hours at our International Auto Shows in Boston with the displays of new cars! I never knew about the clear-top Corvette, but the Nomad was a Motorama highlight for me! (You know my love of wagons!) Incidentally, the upholstery patterns of the 1955 Nomad eventually wound up on the 1956-57 Corvette. To give everyone an idea of how competition works, the Corvette might have died out in 1955 had Ford not brought out the Thunderbird. That was a challenge Chevrolet couldn't ignore and we're all grateful for it! The split window '63 coupe was definitely one of the highlights of Bill Mitchell's career. He cried foul when that was nixed in subsequent years, but some customers complained about it creating a blind spot, so they had to do it. The high point of production was 1979, with more than 53,000 made, and the millionth Corvette was built in 1992. Did you know it was Joie Chitwood who inspired Evel Knievel to become the daredevil performer that he was? It's true. When Knievel was a kid in his native Butte, Montana, Chitwood and his Hell Drivers came to town to perform. Knievel was there to attend and that's when he decided what he wanted to do for a living, although Knievel performed his stunts with motorcycles instead of cars. I've seen this old Chevy dealer promo video here on KZbin called "Impact '66" that has a segment in which Chitwood and the boys put on a thrill show with the new '66 Chevys to demonstrate their stability. As for the rest of the video, looks like they've got more muscle than Charles Atlas and Ahnold could handle! Looking forward to Episode 3!
