I know that these cameras have been out for a while but I thought it might be interesting to hear some impressions about the C200 from a C100mkii user. Whether you're considering renting, upgrading, or buying, here's a few ideas to keep in mind.

It seems that the C100 mkii still has a lot to give even as we enter 2023. I’m currently gearing up for a project and out off all the camera options on the market I keep coming back to this camera. Used they go for about $1k, meaning I could buy three for half the price of an FX6, which is arguably the very best of the latest and greatest. For this project, I don’t expect to do any heavy grading, not do I need 4k (although it’s nice to have) so the mkii might just be the best tool for the job while allowing me to use money in other areas.

As a C100 Mark II user who now owns a C200 I greatly appreciated this video. I love the comparison. I would be interested in a video on using the two as an A and B cam.

If you're on a budget an original c300 has the buttons and screen layout like the c200 and cost about 500 bucks in 2024. Still no 4k, but 4k is a white elephant for my imaging needs and my work flow. 1080 is the sweet spot I have both c100 mk2 and c300. ✌️

The original c300 is a beast. Most camera's since that day have all aged really well. I also find mostly 1080p delivery, but you can also add some sharpening and get a passable 4k delivery. Thanks for the comment!

Just got myself a used c100 mkii to work on a personal family documentary. Got a good price on it and have a new found appreciation for picking up older cinema cameras and no longer falling into the trap of getting the latest and greatest. This video is helpful as I am also eyeing the c200 on the used market as a primary A cam for future projects! So thank you! As I’m in no rush for a 4k cinema camera, I may hold off as they rumor that a c200 mkii is coming out this year. If so, I hope that means the c200 will drop even lower on the used market (hopefully breaking the 2k mark but we shall see)

Hey Alan! Glad you found the video helpful and I'm excited for you with your C100mkii! I think it's a great entry point into the Cinema line of cameras even in 2023. Built in XLR, ND's alone make such a big difference, especially on documentaries. If you decide to shoot CLOG, my advice is to remember that you're only getting a slight dynamic range boost. Try to expose well for your skin tones and avoid big dynamic range challenges, or commit to focusing on the highlights or shadows. That's the C100mkii's sweet spot. You'll get a really nice image from the C100mkii and if you do upgrade, it will only give you more latitude and flexibility with those skills.

@@MylesBelland thank you, those are solid advice! been sticking to Wide DR but am thinking of trying the OWLBOT profile for this camera. btw, do you have a recommendation for a super zoom lens? i currently have the canon stm 18-135 but am debating about trying out the tamron 16-300. this would mainly be for shooting in unpredictable/documentary type stuff. otherwise i got my sigma 18-35 and an assortment of other lenses. open to suggestions for lenses in general!

@@AlanChunkyMunky Hmm, good question. Honestly, my C100mkii lives with the 17-55mm f/2.8 canon lens. I absolutely love that combo. With the crop it's basically a 24-70. Super versatile. For wides I use the 10-18mm. Most doc stuff you won't need a long lens for unless you're trying to film something far away but definitely use what works for you!

Used the C100 MKii back in my film school days. And I owned a C200 for a few years. Both are great cameras. Sadly I sold my C200 to switch over to the new Sony cameras. Don’t know why Canon felt the need to keep 10 bit out of the C200. I do miss the tactile and heavy duty feel of the C200. It made for some organic handheld motion.

The C200 is super weird because you really have 2 choices - Maximum Quality RAW, or Low Quality 8-bit. Ergonomically the C200 was in a good sweet spot though, agreed. I know a couple of people who use the C200 to really amplify their careers because of all of the benefits. Hope you enjoy your Sony's!

Love this video. My C70 sits because I love my C100 MKII. I have to have an EVF. My dream camera would be a C100 ergonomic camera that could shoot 10 bit 422, 4K with eye detection AF (like the EOSR has).
@MylesBelland
@MylesBelland 2 жыл бұрын
Haha, you know, I just bought a C70 and you're right on it. If you could have the specs of the C70 with the eyepiece and screen of the C100mkii, and the face/eye AF of the EOSR it would be happy days. Overall I enjoy the C70 a lot, but the one downside is the LCD screen isn't very bright and without an eyepiece like the C100mkii, daylight filming is challenging. Thanks for sharing! :)

Thanks Duff TV! I own a C70 now also and I really enjoy it. You've played with both so you probably have your own thoughts but I'm split on the form factor. The C70 is great because you can pack it so easy in a bag when you strip it down. I always had a hard time making the C100 fit in my pelican because of the eyepiece and the awkward shape it makes. On the flip side, there are times when I miss the C100's eyepiece. Having a viewfinder to press against your body is great for stability and also making sure your shots are in focus. Always pros and cons. No one size fits all I guess! -- Noted on the focus, haha :p

Really love this video, but I will say the side by side with the EOS R, C100mkii, and C200 is invalid since the native ISO on the C100mkii is 850 and 800 on the C200. Having those two at 400 doesn’t help at all.

good impressions, do you think it's worth the upgrade from c100 mk ii to a c200 nowadays? 4k 8 bit is much better than c100's 1080? Or better wait for a future c200 mk ii or even opt for the c70. I love the ergonomics of the c100 and obviously i will miss it on the c70.
@MylesBelland
@MylesBelland Жыл бұрын
Hi GUI! Good question. I sort of made this video to ask myself the same question and here's where I ended up. If you own a C100mkii and you're looking to upgrade, I would strongly consider the C70 over the C200 except for a few reasons. Reason 1 would be you can get a great price on the C200. Reason 2 would be you wan to film handheld, and the ergonomics are better for a shoulder rig right out of camera. Aside from that, I feel like the C70 outclasses the C200 in every way, and the C100mkii to C200 felt more like a marginal upgrade. For me, I wanted to have 4k 10bit for more latitude filming, and the sensor in the C70 has a beautiful dynamic range. Coming from the C100mkii that was my biggest limitations: dynamic range and 8bit codec. The C200 sensor can shoot 4k, but its dynamic range and overall image was still too similar to the C100mkii for me. That is unless you're shooting RAW but then you're into a whole different workflow which will cost you a lot more to work with, and at that point you're at the price of the C70 which can do it better out of camera. I've shot videos on the C100mkii in 1080, added some sharpening and exported in 4k and no one has ever noticed so that was less of a draw for me, but still really nice to have. I love how light and modular the C70 is. You can use it bare bones in a backpack, or rig it up as a big cinema. The C200 feels like you have to keep it in that cinema area because it is a heavier camera. You also have to use Allen key to add the monitor arm and monitor. But like I said, if you can get your hands on a C200 at a good price, or you prefer the ergonomics of how it works with your process, it could be a nice upgrade.

The C100 is still such a great camera. Just wondering why your test shots weren't at native ISO?
@MylesBelland
@MylesBelland Жыл бұрын
I've always called my C100mkii a workhorse camera and it's really stuck true to that name, even all these years later. I can't remember why the shots weren't at native ISO but you're totally right, it would have been better. Although with the C100mkii because it's 8-bit, I've found that because the dynamic range isn't huge to begin with, it's less punishing than other cameras to be off the native ISO. For fun, if you check out the first Flying Canoe video on my channel, that was filmed at 8000 ISO on the C100mkii and it still looks pretty reasonable, lol. Thanks for the comment DH!

@@MylesBelland Just curious, how are you liking shooting RAW with the C200? I'm currently wrestling with picking up a C200 or BMPCC 6K Pro. Intermediate codecs for the win? Also, as I understand it, it's really necessary to get the exposure right with Canon when shooting RAW. Thoughts?

Hey bro,when using your C100 Mark II in WDR in low light, do you see flickering lines on your lcd? If you leave the lens cap on in WDR you can see these flickering lines. When I shoot under exposed in lowlight my image will have these flickering lines between 850 and 1600 iso.

Hey Sylvester! Don't know if you figured this out yet but I just saw your comment. Grabbed my C100mkii and tried in in WDR with the cap on at 850 iso and it looked normal. And it's only in WDR profile, not Cinema? If the problem follows you from picture profile to picture profile, I would guess it's an issue with the Sensor. Might be good to talk to Canon. Feel free to send me a pic and I can try and help you troubleshoot mate.

Interesting points - Love my C100 M2, but I passed on the C200 because it was still 4.2.0 8 Bit - C'mon on Canon!!!! As a C100 M2 user I was really disappointed that the C70 has no EVF and a weak hinge on the LCD screen. C70 is a fine camera, but these 2 points kept me from buying it right at release. Canon was supposed to have a C200 M2 in April right? 4.2.2 10 bit - where is it?

@@MylesBelland So many incredible choices as a video shooter now - really overwhelming. Honestly one of the things that keeps me loyal to the C100 is the very small, highly gradable files - pretty amazing for 4.2.0 8 bit. However my next video camera (when I make the 4k plunge) MUST HAVE -1. Built in ND's and 2. Cooling Fan for sensor. I've been shooting a bit with my co-worker's Panasonic S1H and even with mediocre autofocus and no built-ND's it's a superb camera - great image quality and so many file format choices. Great EVF too.

That seems too good to be true -- probably scam. You could try and contact the seller, but is it worth the whole hassle? For me, buying used cameras I would always want to get hands on to make sure I'm comfortable with it and to run my own tests. My mindset is, if a client is depending on me for this, I need to depend on this camera.

@MylesBelland Жыл бұрын
@@LearningCurveTech Yeah, totally. Interesting. Looking at the prices on eBay that's 1/3 what they go for which is suspicious. A couple hundred off, maybe. You want the camera to work for you though, and not come at a discount because the sensor is scratched, etc. Also have to consider if this is a camera you can afford to deal with issues if you're buying economical. Say for example you have an A camera and this is a B camera, you might be willing to put up with the used process. Personally for my work I would rather pay the full rate for "peace of mind" that it's 100% quality shape and if there's issues I can talk to the store. But I've heard people getting good used deals before so definitely do what works for you!

@@MylesBelland one more question. Do you think a C100 mark ll is worth it if I already have a Gh5? I want something with a more ergonomic design and cinema features
@MylesBelland
@MylesBelland Жыл бұрын
@@LearningCurveTech For sure man, happy to answer your questions :) I love my C100mkii. I think if you know what to expect and you know it's limitations you can still get a lot out of this camera, even in 2023. That's a camera that if you can get a good deal on, could be a big upgrade. From the GH5, the built in ND's, XLR inputs, and eyepiece/erganomics is a game changer upgrade. I checked out your GH5 video and saw you into wedding filmmaking - this would be a great place the C100mkii excels. I find it's a really clean image, even up to 8000ISO. And long battery life. I've said it since the day I bought mine, it's a real workhorse camera. Maybe not the most sexy but definitely puts in work. And that shows that I'm still using it to this day. Each camera has its place in your kit, and the C100mkii is still a solid camera. Just don't expect that it will excel at everything because it's a "cinema" camera. The basics of good filmmaking always apply. It's not stabilized, doesn't have face AF, and has 8-bit image. So you have to know that and work with it. But honestly, a C100mkii with a shotgun mic and lav on the hotshot is still a sweet setup. Especially with the eyepiece and the grip, it becomes part of your arm. That's a few thoughts, haha. Hope that helps my man! :)

Hi Willie! To the best of my memory, the C100mkii doesn't have touch screen autofocus, only the C200. You can program a button on the C100mkii to autofocus when you press, or set it to always centre weighted. Only the C200 gets the fancy touchscreen. In my experience using it, it works great! But it's best used in a situation where you can take the time to tap to focus (ie. tripod). Hope that helps!
