Smart simple fix that would be mostly hidden by most owners. I will order tonight, my Z06/07 is jealous of the modern marvel. Can’t part with the “streetfighter” yet, but Z06 probably will not hit my driveway until 2024 if parts/over-demand etc., and Stingray C8 popularity continues. Unfortunately the GM bean counters count money, not cars!

Correction: I was wrong the new 2021 C8 do not have the drain holes. I read somewhere that GM was going to add them to the 2021 but I guess they never did…

Nice video, I am more a mechanical guy than waxer, so kudos on this one. IIWM I'd coat any nuts/bolts with a high temp grease (brake grease) or any anti rust coating that'll hold up over time before closing the strut tops in. Not light duty stuff like WD40. Rust will happen even without standing water. So if that's a FRUNK it should be fairly water tight, where's the water coming from? Do the frunk seals need fixing? :) Froggy
@HorsePowerObsessed3 жыл бұрын
The water is draining off the window before the frunk and then draining out the bottom of the car as designed but these pockets on the strut mounts are holding water.

Question? Pardon my lack of knowledge, but are there similar strut-towers on the rear of the vehicle and do the have the same issue? Especially after cleaning the engine bay? :)
@HorsePowerObsessed3 жыл бұрын
Water could sit in the rear as well, but the crevices are a lot more shallow so they don't hold as much water and it's easily dried out by engine heat or a towel.

Jason, that's a severe safety problem. Its not the water, its steel inside aluminum which is not allowable. The fact that the bolt shows rust means its not aluminum and not stainless. GM needs to replace those bolts before wheels start sheering off. Ref: "It is unusual to see galvanic corrosion on aluminum in contact with stainless steel (passive). In contrast, contact between copper, bronze, brass and different kinds of steel alloys (passive and active) and aluminum can cause severe corrosion."
@BrisLS1 Жыл бұрын
Aren't all wheels then at risk for sheering off, since the lug nuts are just some low cost steel, and the wheels are aluminum? I agree with the concern in the video. Having something cast as a Belgian waffle to save weight, and then facing it up to the rain. I would use this mod, and of course use a shop vac or shop towel to evacuate the water, and then some 3-1 oil just to coat and seal that bolt, even though I don't think there is a huge risk here, because again... lug nuts and rain, not hearing about a lot of lug nut rust failures..

Does anyone know if any of the Corvette engineers have offered any explanation to this oversight. This would be bad enough if it was on a Chevy Malibu, but unacceptable on a halo car such as the Corvette. This problem has been reported since the C8 first came out and now 2 (3?) years later still nothing. Disappointing that every C8 owner has to go thru the hassle of buying and installing these on their own.
@HorsePowerObsessed3 жыл бұрын
Just like the front radiator grills, GM has come out and said that they don't think this will be an issue. Unfortunately, I know it will be and the radiators in the front without additional protection will be an issue in the future too.
@JJAAZZMan3 жыл бұрын
As I was writing my original comment, I was thinking of the grill insert issue also. But I had heard that Tadge J. had mentioned,as you said, that they didn't feel it was a problem, as they were concerned about the possibility of obstructing airflow during heavy use ( racing?) and possibly voiding the warranty. But I don't see any reason that they couldn't easily address the strut tower/water problem.
