I'd take the old mechanical one all day those where almost bullet proof. Keep up on the fluids run forever.

I just bought a Cat D5C, similar to the Deere 650G. I looked for both and a good D5C came up first. Wanted to stick to a mechanical machine with no emissions. Hydro and computer is beyond my desire and ability to fix. I've enjoyed your education over the years on dozers. It helped me to make a better buying decision.

I had a 450B loader 1972 it was all mechanical with dry clutches direct drive. It was a work horse. Ran it in a landscape construction company. I finally sold it I’m not sure if, it is still around. It needed a complete under carriage under it. I did rebuild the engine once and new tracks once. I think it had between 20 and 30 thousand hours on it. It was stick steer. Loved that machine I wish I still had it.

Had an uncle that got a 450G LGP to recalim some land and I got all the hours I wanted on it helping him. Great little machine but It was tough when I would move to a skid steer with the foot controlled bucket. After hours of steering the dozer with my feet, I would dig lots of holes with that skid steer!

Thanks for sharing Clint, you certainly are a mine of information, the only thing that I can see that John Deere has done is over the years, instead of keeping the ethos of making equipment easy to repair, it's now become more complicated and there for more difficult. 👍🤗

That 450G would be nice to have.. I picked up a 1974 450C track loader in 2001 with just over 2200 original hours on it and have put about 380 hours on it since. I have known the original salesman who sold the machine since about 1980 and the original owner for about 10 years who has provided me with its original sales documentation and other info. Hard to believe that in the middle 70's you could buy a 450C for around 20K.

My dad bought a brand new 450C dozer w/rippers in 1980 for $40K. I still have it and it works good. Just replaced all of the original hydraulic hoses 2 years ago. Nice simple machine.

No Kevin in a swim suit..LOL, my neighbor lady wanted to see that.... poor Kevin is what I call this one particular. My time has come and plumb left the planet, I ran machines with a clutch arm plus steer brakes and steer clutches. Oh, cable blades were just what most had then... glad that time is over for the most part .... I'm saying that even a cable blade had places it did shine. I would like to see a grade control that stops a guy from going down too deep when doing like ya did in front of the shop doing the extension of the floor.

My mind may be playing tricks on me here but I ran a JD dozer for a few days and I swear it was a 455G with fancy hand-grip steering that would spin in its own footprint like a skid-steer loader. 6-way blade. It was a rental unit so every “Operator” did the spin turn and destroyed the rails. I only did it once just to be sure it would do it. It had the speed changing toggle by the left thumb and before I got it figured out I kept accidentally bumping it up and down, going faster and slower until I looked down and saw the rabbit and turtle. Or tortoise. Whatever. Could be a hare too - suffice it to say that there are two animals on there for non-readers among us. Plus it works in any language - there’s that. I liked running it even though I had to get used to it being deflected by bigger brush piles. At the time I was used to running a D7 with plenty of trouser on it so it would really push straight. Spoiled , I guess.

Well, i'm surely not wrong when i say, that the older models surely have the advantage that they are all mechanical with almost nothing electrical or computers in it what makes them very durable and easy to fix. Okay dont get me wrong, having electrical/digital systems is surely a nice thing to have because it can help you a LOT operating the machine, but the problem with that is, the more electrical systems, computers, sensors and all you have in a machine, the higher the chance gets that one little part gets screwed up and you have to search DAYS to find the problem. IF you can find the problem. I remember a excavator that had an electrical problem, a certain cable had a returning short circuit all the time when it ran that was blowing the fuses again and again, and nobody could find the problem because they checked the cable over and over with no damage to be seen somewhere. They then endet up by cutting the cable and making a bypass that replaced the old cable and Tadaa, it worked like clockwork after that. So electical/digital systems on a machine can be curse and blessing at the same time.
