Yes, it was nice seeing the flag respected and not having it touch the ground. Now they have to rig up a light if it stays up at night.

As a teenager some 40+ yrs ago I used to go to the local quarry and watch the Ruston Bucyrus dragline at work for hours, the skill of the operator was evident to me even back then. Now seeing how complex they are to operate, sooo many controls, I’m blown away that the operator could put that bucket right next to his last pass on the swing, drag it in ‘till it was full, swing and dump the whole bucket load into the dump truck, and return to the next dig all in one fluid motion taking seconds with not one of them wasted! 🤯🤯

You say that your impressed with the guys that designed and built those machines back in the day and they did it with slide rules! You could not get a engineer to even work a slide rule today, let alone design anything with it! Oh ya and no calculators! Nothing but math and pencils!!! Yup they did that ! ! ! USA! PROUD!

They tended to overbuild them back then. You could run them by the seat of your pants without breaking them. A modern machine wouldn't stand up to that overloading.

It was over 50 years ago but on the Link Belt Speeder crane I operated, it seems to me you controlled the boom lift by pulling back on two control handles at the same time. Pull back and the boom raises and push forward and the boom lowers. I wish I could ask Dad and the others I worked with but they have all passed away and my memory is not what it used to be. You accomplished your goal anyway, so good job guys.

Nice video. That brings back lots of memories of being an oiler, deck engineer and a wannabe operator on those friction rigs. Each drum should have a dog. When applied it will prevent it from paying out line when the brake is released. Also wear gloves. On wire that cycles a lot you will have individual wires breaking and sticking out the side. We used to call those meat hooks. The way the wire clamp was installed on the becket on the boom cable is wrong. You never want to clamp those together. There’s a chance to push the wedge out when the wire is shocked ( boom bouncing when traveling). You need to cut a short piece off the cable and clamp that to the dead end of the cable. There’s an old saying when putting the cable clamp on too. Never saddle a dead horse. Thanks for all the videos you guys are putting out.
@tomrogers9467
@tomrogers9467 Жыл бұрын
I learned long ago when wrangling wire rope : as you said, always wear gloves, and use hand over hand method, NEVER slide your hands down the cable. Those “meat hooks” will go a long way into soft flesh!

Remember, back when they designed that beast they used sliderulers, dozens of and engineers, drafting benches, large sheets if paper plus pencils and other items. No CadCam computer programs with modern materials and robot assisted assembly methods. Computers galor installed. When muscle power was required to operate one. All those old operators had massive bicepts and thighs plus beer bellies to match.

Having flashbacks watching you work on that crane . First off your boom line is not called strands . In wire rope and rigging it’s referred to parts of line . Yiur boom rigging has 6 parts of wire rope . When I first started on the Alaska Railroad I ran a 1942 Koering crawler driving piling . Those d machines made you earn your pay for your days work . when I started running a 1965 P&H 65B with magnetorque system I thought I was in hog heaven . Luv the old stuff you play with

If you start playing with the wrecking ball again take a tractor trailer tire and put it between the cable and chain it acts like a shock absorber and takes the shock load off the cable and boom. That's the way we use to do it when men were men and sheep were scared. Kevin being a carpenter probably had no problem climbing up the boom . We use to ride the ball of the crane to the top of high rises in the city. 🍻
