Reminds me of the days when we had American 7220s. We would take the tracks, including the rails, off. Then take them apart to build up the track pads where the rollers ran on them with several layers of 7018 using 1/4 inch rod. We also built up the drive, idler sprockets and rollers with weld. We replaced the bushings in the idler sprockets, rollers and the drive sprocket block bushings. If I recall correctly, the track pins were 1-1/2 inch and we replaced them with 1-9/16 to take up some of the wear.

My first excavator was a 1970 something linkbelt LS5000. It weighed in at 100,000 lbs and had a live swing that was operated by clutches that looked like a brake lining and a drum. When you wanted to stop the swing you had to reverse the swing so it would stop and then change direction. A 10 hour day in that machine would make a man out of you. You ran the bucket and the stick with your feet and the swing and travel with your hands and they were not pilot controls, great long linkages and levers. It was quite a workout and I’m glad I had the chance to learn how to run it. Great video guys👍

The slow firing putt putt of her starting is the sweet sound of some older diesels on boats, just barely above an idle and crossing oceans with that slow putt putt putt in the background. hmm, it got shipped out right around when I was born. ( Feb. 1965 )

When I was the "Oiler", on an old NW # 25, I would hook the mats when the operator was moving, Or grease what you could during operation. sometimes I would stand behind the operator and watch and learn. Or go back by the engine and wipe off grease and oil. During noon break I would pump diesel fuel, or grease more. One day the ole operator said I had to climb up the boom and grease the top sheves or wheels. So I reluctaintly started climbing up the boom, after I got over half way up, he hollers wait, wait, wait, come back down, today we'll do it differently I'll lower da boom, aye.

Chug chug chug . That sucker is a "Lunger" got some lungs on it for sure 5lbs coffee can size pistons with a 10" stroke 😱 I've never worked on a Murphy, seen one or two ... at a distance. Couldn't pick one out in a crowd. TLC my fav type of video ... Thankx Fantastic video 👍 love that old stuff.

I remember doing this on my NCK 1405 dragline crane back in the 80's. I had extra wide track pads for soft ground. We used a CAT 977 to take up the slack in the tracks. When I changed my engine oil, I used the old oil to lubricate my drive chains. So pleased to see this video, brought back many fond memories for me. Love, health and respect from Scotland UK.

It's great seeing the dragline getting some love. Those old track adjusters can be a pain sometimes and take forever to wind out a long way. Taking a link out I think is quite acceptable for the few hours that it will move in the rest of it's life. I am looking forward to seeing more work being done on it and then watching it work.

Cool old beast. When I was like 6 years old me and my buddy Davey watched an old guy loading a very similar rig onto a lowboy trailer. It slipped off the ramps and a couple 6 year olds watched that poor feller get squished as he tried to jump free from the house. Davies mom made us go in the backyard so we couldn't watch the extraction but we were peeking thru the fence. Poor guy was squished...

I remember watching draglines work on several jobs. There are so many separate moves involved in just using the bucket to dredge that it might take days of practice! This looks to be a great snowbound hobby. (Of course I was a kid on the sideline, but I could watch for hours.)

@@jamesfurlong8727 I did my engineering apprenticeship with The London Brick Co in UK. The clay was dug out of the ground with very large draglines that were electric and didn't have tracks. They had large feet arrangements and were walking machines. Happy days 😊

All you need to do with a Murphy to start it is put it in de compress,pull the start lever to get it spinning, wait for the oil pressure to come up, then rock the decompression lever out of decom position ann throttle it up and it will start with out either! Coolest motor ever built!

I know a guy that operated one of these daily for 17yrs with a Magnet on it ,Scrap Steel company had 3 of them , I ran one for a bit with a Grapple on it ; Oh yes they are a Teachers pet to run , Don`t be wearing loose clothing on it ---Specially in winter every time you spin around to come back for another load it`ll keep turning / sliding on the tracks we welded cleats on the tracks but used them so much they wore down ,, We had one that wouldn`t steer worth a shxt had to jam a 3" galvenized pipe in the sprocket to jam the chain then back up a hair remove it keep going do the same both sides to get where your going LOL.

Awesome piece of history and amazing to see ya give her a bit of adjustment. Fellas that ran these back in the day are no longer with us. Reminds me of the guy my dad hired years ago to dig our pond..he used an old Bay City dragline and ever so often he would grab a wrench and crawl under it to make some adjustments..was amazing how he could throw that bucket...anyhow appreciate all you do and share.😁🇺🇸🛠️🔧🚜😇

I was the kid on the spoil pile watching every move the operator made with those beasts. Still remember the smell of hot oil from crawling all over them a minute after the workers left!
