I'd be willing to bet that is the same for cranes. The've improved a lot with technology, but cameras can only show so much and there are still a lot of grease fittings. It's a great starting place for an apprentice to learn from. That is a lot of responsibility to hand over to someone who learned on a simulator. So many young people are getting into construction that can't change a tire and don't know which way to turn a nut on a bolt to take it off or put it on! It's scary to witness.

Merchant marine here, oiler (also caller wiper depending on if you're on commercial ships (oiler) or government ships) position is alive and well in this industry. In the old days that was literally his job to oil and grease and clean up the mess. Still the same now but with diesel and gas turbine making steam obsolete, the job has evolved to cleaning entire engine spaces and a lot more maintenance shit (depends on chief and 1st engineer but because I was mechanically inclined mine always gave me a pretty long leash).

I have a guy at my church that’s 94 and I take him to tractor and equipment shows and hear all his stories of owning a grading business and running draglines. He owned a bucyrus dragline and ran countless others. He still tells the story of running a northwest shovel in the lithium mine and how if you hung a rock, you’d better clutch it quick or that machine would pull itself over😂

When I had my model 25 I said "People think those cranes are made out of iron, the truth is they are made out of grease, the iron is just there to hold the grease in place." Also the factory told me to use Lubriplate gear shield extra heavy out of a caulking tube for the open gears like the bevel gears for swing/travel

Some may say that all those zerks and oil cups and lube points are a pain, but these oldies were engineered to last, Then an engineer came along and took out the lube points and grease fittings and put a dab of grease in the new bearings, lubed for life.... or until the bearing fails. Would be interesting replacing bearings on this machine in the field. must say I enjoy the sound of a real diesel engine, not motor.

Reed Burke - Chris definitely has a few bucket/attachments that might fit that machine. It sounded like it was going be turned into a running, driving and functional dragline flagpole. Getting it operational for the most part is cool, but parts are basically obsolete and maintenance costs would bankrupt a guy quick. My guess is that it's a challenge to get running as good as possible and going to look cool with a flag out front.

I earned my highway tractor license at 19 and was in the trucking business until I retired at 65 in management. Your channel is great entertainment; everyone seems to enjoy doing what they do and it's done right. It's a family business and everyone in the family is hands on. The detail provided is also a great learning tool. There are no voices raised ion anger (on the video anyway 😁) . When Clint goes to an auction site the details of his inspections, what to look for and problem area pointed out, I'm sure are saving viewers tons of money. At 71 I'm still learning and love it. Keep up the great work!

I used to operate a 20Ton crane in the military. You need to watchout that you don't release the drum brake that holds the boom up. It should be supported with something so it don't fall and hit the ground. Those old cranes can be tricky. Good luck.

Had an old Linkbelt with double Deroit engines. It had a swing lock and swing brake. Boom had to be lifted a little bit before boom lock would release by hand to lower boom. You must set the drum direction to raise and lower the boom under power. Other drums should be gravity lowering which is fast if you release the brake. Dragline is a good challenge when you can direct load dump trucks. You will be able to sling the bucket out as far as the length of the boom at 45 degree angle by swinging the boom rapidly. Check boom for cracks and cable for wear before heavy loading. Keep boom aimed at load always, side load can fold boom over rapidly. Old timers used to say cranes never wear out except for brake and clutch shoes. My unit could not lift a load if rain water got on clutches, had to keep things dry. That broken sheave is a concern, may indicate other damage to be discovered or some one was swapping parts for their crane. Don't forget wire rope lube. The thick sticky kind lasts longer and makes wire ropes look new. Take care.

The other thing I'd do, everytime you lift up a cover and discover yet more gears, links, whatever, is just pour oil over them, they obviously haven't seen any in years, it won't do any harm. In fact any joint or moving part - oil it! These beasts are not environmentally friendly, as I think you said, and are just incontinent where oil is concerned. You've discovered the brake pedals that control the 2 cable drums, one for hoist, one for drag, but they will also have indivdual brake locks to keep the brake on, saves you having to ride the pedal with your feet. These locks take different forms with different manufacturers, you'll just have to find out how its done on yours.

Once you get everything loosened up and moving freely the dragline operation should be pretty smooth as far as the swing, drag and hoist go. You get into a rhythm after a while. Eye, hand, foot concert. You set ur throttle to ur comfort. That old rig will do some digging. Start off slow, get a rhythm going and you will eventually pick up ur speed. That Murphy engine is a workhorse, at least the one I was around was.

A little dragline/crane jargon. The pulleys are called sheaves pronounced shiv. Where the cables gather at the top is the gantry. The boom is referred to as the stick. Frictions are what make everything work. Frictions and brakes. The fairlead is what the drag cable goes through.

Frustrations of buying old equipment, and mot having someone whose ran that type personally. Very good friend of mine Das was a utility contractor back in the 50's and 60's. He had old Insley with the pony motor to fire the old cat up that was the power plant. Right before he passed away suddenly, he'd dug out a three acre pond. The ole gurl still sits where he left it in 1967, unfortunately none of the brothers knew how to operate the old girl, and she slowly deteriorated to point that most of the drums have rusted in place. The cables finally rusted do badly they snapped dropping the boom, and it buckled severely. Cab was open to the weather, and a big oak tree grew out far enough that it filled the cab full of leaves rotting away most of control rod connections to levers and pedals. Once I tried to convince him pull the engine and pony motor that was safely sheltered by the dog house. Plus someone had put a old gallon bucket over the stack, fortunately it happened to be old can of roof pitch that had a good inch left in it. So that even though part of the bottom had rusted away, the pitch had melted enough in the hot summers of NE Texas to make a strong seal. He said he couldn't do anything it, because of the two younger brothers that weren't on best of terms with him. Which had been the issue on many occasions such as this. Unfortunately the property was sold behind his back, and he doesn't have access to it any longer. The dragline, old 62 Chevy dump truck, couple old farm implments, probably got scraped, and if they weren't yet. The developer that just bought it to put housing development on the land probably will.

I ran these machines for dad and then for Hornbeck and sons logging. This same machine was also a dip stick with a big old bucket and a trip line to dump the bucket. I had worked for Lawrence for a good while and knew he was so broke it was hurting my feelings to even take his money on paydays. I finally figured out a way to pull the bucket off of it and put tongs on the cable line so we could load logs with it. I remember like yesterday when he saw the machine with that bucket off and a set of tongs hanging on it. Within the hour, he had those controls just a talking and loading out trucks about every fifteen minutes which for those days was lightning quick/lol. I just don't remember a lot at my age as not being in one for ner long as this one was born. I'd guess its been close to fifty years now. I remember that a lot a times we would have to get the gears rolling and let it kind of work itself into the swing or travel and that it took two levers to make it do one or the other... hope to see a lot more of this machine... one thing sure as from my place its looking like it was in really good condition... just saying as I am a few miles off from you here in alaska
