This song was written by Isabel 'Tibbie' Pagan and appropriated by Robert Burns.

The words she's singing aren't the ones set out in the video information section above. Indeed, you won't hear some of the words that are in the little glossary at the end, like "mavis" and "a-faulding." And I'm pretty sure the singer isn't Jimmy Anderson.

It's a woman singing yes?

I was just reading "Greenmantle" (1916), a novel by John Buchan in which a character whistles this song (chapter 14) -- in Turkey, of all places. I had to hear it and found it beautifully sung here.

What a wonderful combination that is, John Buchan's character in Greenmantle whistling the tune in Turkey, I must re-read this sometime. I can even visualize Dougie Henshall in that if it was filmed. So delightfully haunting as well.
