dropping a lil fun psychology fact here. students actually oftentimes get sick during finals for stress!! so it was probably just because of all the things stressing you out that you got sick. also just to reassure you: YOU ARE SO GOOD AT PAINTING CAMILA! i have been watching you for literally over a year at this point and you've not only made a ton of progress, but you've also refined your style into something truly unique. sure hyperealism can be stiff sometimes like you say, but i seriously think that this painting feels alive. the details are stunning, especially for how *big* this piece is. another great watch, im glad to see that this big project all wrapped up, and wish you luck on your next one!

As someone who is Mexican and live in the US w/my family, sitting around the table and eating tacos (or just food in general) is such an important part of spending time with them. Like, I know it looks like a very casual subject for such a big project, but to me, the scene is very personal and speaks to your homesickness. Idk, I really connected with this painting. Btw, I thought that your sister was you this whole time!

I'm so fascinated with the cartoonish character Camila has used in a lot of her work. It feels like a manifestation of the anxiety of art school looming in the background, or in this case it's Cam smiling through the pain of being away from family as she's on the outside looking in. The caricature is useful in the place of true emotion (since Cam is such a silly goose)

14:24 Cam, no matter what major it is, that's a canonic event. I have majored in archival science and for the entirety of my college years, I feel the same as you are describing. And news: now I have a master's degree, and still feel that way lmao but the thing is: now I know a lot more than I knew when I was in my first college semester, but there will always be someone who knows more than me about my area, and that's life. The only thing we can do is try to learn with who knows more and focus on our self-evolution. And you are doing great. Don't let the impostor syndrome get over you! Love from Brazil ❤️

"I had fun doing it, I also did not have fun doing it" is literally me at the end of every project, I'm a junior in painting and print. ur progress on this painting was crazy , I cant believe how much energy u spent on some areas I was really sick during my final, and it forced me to work differently, in a good way but was still really challenging. but mine was only 18x18 inches. major cudos to u !!! I can see this in a museum, its a painting where many people deserve to step up to it and observe your hard work

i really like this painting camilla. it can get frustrating when art gets too conceptual and it feels like everything you make has to have some complex, deeper meaning. in an attempt to make meaningful art, i feel like it can have the opposite effect on the artist and make the artist feel disconnected from their art. this painting doesn't feel like an essay, it feels like a celebration of your conviction. please keep making art, this is inspiring 💗

(This got a littly rant-y, I apologize...) I enjoy all of your content, but I especially like these kind of painting vlogs that focus on one piece from start to finish, and this one spoke to me a lot. I would consider myself an artist, and while I'm on a much lower skill level than you, a lot of the struggles that come with it (or with being passionate about doing any kind of thing, really) I can relate to. Hearing you speak openly about your worries and your struggles with your painting, and seeing you overcome them with a finished painting to prove it really motivates me to do the same. I love being able to see your progress through the years, and I really enjoy the mix of hyperrealism with the looser and more playful elements of your more recent work. I feel like it's so hard to realize you're making progress because it all happens gradually and slowly, but then you look back on your work from a year ago and suddenly you realize how much you've learned, and to me that's so rewarding. I'm definitely way less qualified to judge your art than yourself or your professors or anyone who actually knows what they're talking about, but in my eyes, you've absolutely improved over the last years and I hope you are able to see that and be proud of yourself for it, because you absolutely should. Thank you for making these videos, and please get some rest after that colossus of a painting!!

you have so much intention behind your art and care for the craft and that's already enough to make people respect you as an artist, no matter if you use fancy, meandering words or not. i can relate so hard studying architecture at uni and i think keeping hold of those intentions which are true to yourself is so important and it becomes the best thing about your work so stay strong!! well done camila!

Hearing you talk about how your struggle to love your art, and style, and process is so real and comforting to hear. I'm currently in ap drawing and its highkey brutal and I feel like a fraud all the time. I appreciate how honest you are in your videos about your personal challenges as an art student, and just an artist in general. It's not easy to be kind to yourself and recognize the things you're good at, but you are truly so inspiring and every piece I have seen you create as left me in awe.

Just to give you some relief about feeling like your classmates make "smarter" painting than you, as an artist you will naturally gravitate towards ideas, images, and paint them without always knowing the deeper meaning behind it. That's because the deeper meaning cna be extracted from it afterwards, if that makes sense. When you write an essay about a painting in art history class, you will find a ton of references, composition aspects and meaning that you wouldn't have seen if you were just looking at it. You should try and analyse your own painting that way and find ways to express your ideas in a more subtle way. That's what you did already by adding the distorted version of you, you're already doing that work. So just because your classmate is a couple steps ahead in that aspect doesn't mean your painting lacks meaning, it just means that you have yet to see your paintings in that new, more analytic light. You're doing great Camila, this painting is amazing and I see a LOT of things to say considering the context you explained. From the way you portray the warm atmosphere that you miss so much, to how you feel like you're missing out, keeping a smile on, while your family is blissfully unaware that you're going through it (lil bro playing in the back instead of spending time with your family like you wish you could is such a mood). This painting really is a perfect summary of your semester, from your reasons for painting it, to the way you did it (pulling from so many visual references instead of the one picture) and shows your progress. Don't lose hope!

this is by far the most relatable video and realistic portrayal of what painting is like. before getting into college i made a 2 by 3 meter (maybe even bigger i dont remember) painting that took around 90 hours and i can tell u right now that 90% of what you said in this video was how i was feeling word for word 😭😭😭 especially the being in the studio for 8 hours but only getting 3 hours of work done, i even remember feeling sick the whole day during painting (probably because of the paint smell and constantly having to think and stand and work for as long as i could) but yeah just wanted to say because it felt reassuring to watch this video and know im not alone in this

I'm an illustration major and everyone just loves the loos styles but like I just render stuff and do more like a traditional approach ig (and anime sometimes lol but also quite rendered ). I feel like there is always a current style that is seen as good and some people will just disregard everything diffrent reagrdless of the quality of it, which is insane in art?? But I do feel you on that sadly. (btw I adore your work !!)

Grass is always greener and that’s why it’s better to only compare yourself to yesterday. If you improve each day (on average, nothing is linear) then they stack up like bricks building a house.
