I watched this because I wanted to remind myself what Victoria Station looked like when I was a child. I used to travel trans Pennine on trains that were usually heading to Liverpool Lime Street and my memory is of a station that was huge with at least 14 platforms. So much has changed now. Thank you for uploading it Alan.

Excellent filming and lovely to hear railway men chat and share their knowledge. Well done!

Superb to watch Alan. Thanks for uploading. Great memories of going to school in Prestwich from Woodlands road or up to Bury or Manchester Victoria at weekends. Thanks again for uploading.

Also you may have noticed that there’s no sign of the aws sound for the amber light signal ahead and no ringing bell after the clear signals ahead

Those sounds of the past: clack of train wheels over fishplate joins of track laid on wooden sleepers, the thunk of heavy slam doors closing - train travel was much more real and in the moment back then.

The third-rail was sleeved from 1916 on three sides by a special type of durable wood to protect track-workers : in this clip the wood apoears to be missing in places, in quite a few places.

Visited Manchester around 1990 to see the trams. Victoria was a dark dingy place then.

Can you please explain to someone that knows little about trains and track. I can see what looks like a third line, power supply, possibly, but it looks damaged in places, even broken? with bits sticking out all over the place. Anyone's comments would be most welcome.

It's similar to the third rail electric system favoured by the Southern Region and on Merseyside.

What does it want to be? Metro or HÉV or suburban express train. It doesn't fit either. It's not good as a subway, because it wasn't built that way. it is dangerous for Hév and other railways. An underwire track must be separated.

It last over 70 years before it was replaced by Metrolink. So it was clearly safe enough!.

It would be OK if we knew the stations names apart from that good video.
