The temperature has been in the mid-upper-90s here in south-central Texas since May - a long, hot, typical summer. This video takes me back to the mid-1990s when we were stationed in Germany and visited Switzerland and Austria. The clock at Landquart station showed 4:15 PM...I remember what it was like at that time of day, at that time of the year: when city lights were just starting to turn on; bundling up in warm clothes; the sensation of breathing the cold, clean air; the wonderful aromas of food cooking in nearby gasthauses; the incredible beauty of the snow-covered mountains and scenery (inhale...exhale...ahhhhhhh). Thank you so very, very much for uploading this video. This is an immensely refreshing virtual holiday break, made even more special from the unobstructed, peaceful, almost mesmerizing view from the locomotive cab.

I once travelled from Calais to Basel and then on to Interlaken, on a Scout Troop exchange. It was *the* best railway journey I ever made. I love Swiss trains. This journey was a pure treat and so relaxing to watch and a unique perspective too. I will subscribe. Thank you so much for the journey. One question, what do the beeps signify please?
@lorirocks7775 жыл бұрын
Deebz270 Thanks for your comment! The high pitch beeps are the train asking the driver to confirm he or she are awake. The low pitch indicates an upcoming speed reduction which the driver must confirm.

So the Swiss have a place named after the chemical symbol for gold, "Au"? :) For some reason, I'm not surprised. :D I'm wondering if this line uses the same emergency red-light stop system as Australia? The Australian system is simple yet very effective. At each signal, right beside the track is a box with a lever and there is a metal "shoe" on the end of the lever. If the signal is at either "caution" or "clear" then the shoe is lowered, otherwise it is raised. On each engine is a small lever which will hit the shoe and be pushed from vertical to horizontal if the train passes the light while the shoe is raised. This releases the air from the engine pipe which applies the brakes. To reset the brakes so the train can move again, someone has to get out and use a tool to move the lever back to the vertical position again. I could see boxes next to the rails at some of the lights in this video, but the video resolution on my computer isn't high enough for me to see if they have the same lever-shoe system as Australia has.
@lorirocks7776 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for sharing how the Aussie system works. Sounds clever! Switzerland started off using magnets and induction in the 1930's to convey warnings to the driver, which he then had to acknowledge. Without acknowledgement, a mechanism would open the brakeline and cause the train to brake. It wasn't until the 70's that differentiation was made between a warning (or caution) and halt. Since then, trains passing a red signal would automatically stop as soon as they passed. The brakes could be reset using a button in a cupboard. The system had to be tested daily in order to confirm functionality. In the 90's, a system known as ZUB was introduced, which monitored train speed in conjunction with distance to the signal, gradients, brake effectiveness, top train speed & top allowable speed in order to calculate the highest speed a train could safely travel at any given time with respect to approaching speed limitations or red signals. ZUB is usually programmed to stop the train before the "point of danger" and in optimal conditions (dry weather) might stop a train before the red signal. ZUB is expensive and therefore only used in areas where human error could lead to dangerous situations, such as crossings on single tracked lines and sharp corners. The newest system, ETCS does away with signals and monitors the train's every move. It does practically everything short of accelerating. Signs take place of signals and permitted speeds need to be read from the interface in the cab. Communication between the infrastructure & train happen wirelessly.
@JasonMasters6 жыл бұрын
@lorirocks777: No, but I was friends with a railway maintenance man for some years. He's retired now and lives in a retirement home in the same town as me. It always intrigued me how he tested the brakes by briefly opening the valve at the back of the train, and I couldn't understand at first how the brakes seemed to work in reverse, so that putting air into the system would release the brakes instead of applying them. It was a few years before I came across an explanation of how the three-function valve works on trains so that I could understand the braking system. It also helped me to understand how and why some forms of air-brake failure happen. Thankfully, modern precision instrumentation means that "over-charging" of brake systems is now very rare. Some quite serious train incidents have occurred because the driver and guard thought that the brake system was over-charged when it wasn't, leading to them inadvertently disabling the brakes before setting out. Personally, I still prefer Australia's simple yet effective system to stop trains which go past a red (or disabled) signal. I love electronics, but the more parts a system uses, the more things there are to go wrong.
@lorirocks7776 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying. In Switzerland, most accidents have happened despite trains being stopped at red signals, because of the distance it took them to brake, so here its important to try stop the train before the signal to avoid an accident. I guess each system has to work for the area it is serving and when it fails, a solution has to be found. I'm not sure how the aussie system would hold up here, with the amounts of snow we get in winter. Ice formation is also very common on the underside of trains, because the snow melts in the warmer tunnels and freezes again back in the open, freezing mechanical parts including brakes. The system here has been working very reliably for almost a century. Any trains with failures are speed restricted and taken straight out of service to be repaired. The chances of a system failing exactly at the moment a train driver oversees a red signal are extremely slim - it has never happened before in the histroy of Swiss railways. That is with over 10'000 trains operating per day for the SBB alone, not to mention all the private railways. Overcharged brakes self adjust back to their default pressure within about 10 minutes in Switzerland. With the modern rolling stock of passenger trains, there's no real need to overcharge the brakes anymore though, except with international trains that have been coupled with national coaches, in order to bring all the coaches to the same pressure.

How? How can a passenger train NOT stop at Ziegelbrucke? It's a major junction.
@lorirocks7775 жыл бұрын
There's another service called a RegioExpress that does. In all, already 5 connections per hour from Zürich. Trains have to fit into a tight schedual, perhaps if the InterCity would stop, connections in Chur would be jeopordised and if it left Zürich earlier then connections from other trains might also be jeopordised. Changing 1 element has an effect on a large part of the whole.
