I am of Polish descent, you are amazing Rachel! We core the cabbage, slow boil il to remove all the cabbage leaves. I also boil rice set aside set asid. My meat mixture that my Polish mother did consisted of two eggs 2 pounds of ground beef, salt and pepper, softly, sautéed onion,Gently peel the cabbage leaves as they are slowly cooking cut any cores that seem tough. We always used whole tomatoes and juice at least three cans. The large ones chop them with a knife. Use all the juice also add one can of tomato soup mix thoroughly add salt and pepper set aside once all filling is wrapped tightly and all the cabbage rolls, tightly placed them in a large baking roaster with lid . Pour t tomato mixture all over the cabbage rolls put extra cabbage leaves all over the top cover and bake at 350 Degrees for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Served with butter, potatoes or mashed potatoes.always comes out delicious.

Your 3/4 cooked rice comment reminded me of a childhood memory. My mother's cousin was a newcomer to this country. Born and raised in Belgium, she escaped the Nazi deathcamps to settle in the U.S. after living in Israel for a number of years. Well, her first year living here in the United States, she told my mother and my mother's sister that she would make Thanksgiving dinner for our families. However, not knowing the American traditional custom of serving turkey, dressing, pumpkin pie, etc., she decided to serve cabbage rolls. Only, they were not like your cabbage rolls... not by a long shot. For one thing, she threw the rice into her meat without cooking it first. The rice was so hard, it tasted like pellets and crunched with every bite! So, as little kids often do... I was brutally honest about my disappointment. I whispered to my mother, who was sitting across the table from me, "This is the WORST Thanksgiving I ever had!" Of course, my mother didn't wish to hurt her cousin's feelings, so she gave me a swift kick from underneath the table! Funny that I look back at this one Thanksgiving today as perhaps the one I remember most... not for the horrible cabbage rolls, but out of fondness for the woman making them. Making these cabbage rolls was, in fact, a testament to this woman's strength and will to survive the unimaginable horrors of the death camps, to journey halfway around the world, and cook a meal for her remaining relatives in a new land.

A little tip for you to make them xtra special is- at the very end of your dish after the final saucing you thinly slice a little extra onion and spread it over the top then you put a few strips of raw bacon on top of the onion slices then cover and bake as usual. That extra bit of onion and bacon adds such I nice flavor to the tomato sauce. Try it you’ll love the result, I promise.

Rachel - I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you, your style, and loving heart. We grew up on cabbage rolls. My beautiful late Mother came from a Polish family (her maiden name ended in 'ski') and they KNEW how to make their cabbage rolls. My Dad's family came from old school Russia - they were also Extremely PROUD of their cabbage rolls. My husband, however, is from a Hungarian heritage on his father's side. ALL of these family heritages were absolutely PROUD of their cabbage rolls. For me, I lost my beautiful mother when I was just 17 years old. She LOVED to cook and loved us so so much. I cannot tell you how much she would have enjoyed you and your easy-going style of cooking. I feel like she is reaching out to me through you and teaching me what I didn't have the chance to learn from her. I know that sounds cheezy and hopeful; but, I'm convinced she is reaching out to me through YOU. May God Bless you and your family. This video brought back so many memories of my childhood. My grandmother made cabbage rolls every holiday. We called them hulupche, she didn’t use meat for her filling. She sautéed onions to a nice golden sweet taste, then added partially cooked rice. She’d fill the bottom of the roasting pan with boiled cabbage leaves, fill up the pan with the cabbage rolls, add 2 Tbs of vinegar, dot the top with lots of butter. She’d cover the top of the rolls with more cabbage leaves. They’d cook in her roaster for 90 minutes or more. There would be 50 + for Thanksgiving or Christmas at Grandmas, she never ran out of her delicious Polish food. My daughter makes them, as well do lots of cousins, 4 generations cooking Grandma’s food. You are a fantastic teacher! Thank you.

I love the sweet & slightly sour taste of these. I also have learned over the years when I'm in the mood for cabbage rolls hut only have a partial head of cabbage or I want something quicker, I make the sauce, cook my meat and add to the sauce add my chopped cabbage and 3-4 cups beef broth and let simmer about a half hour or until the cabbage is soft. I then add my rice (completely cooked) and just simmer to meld the flavors and we have a wonderful cabbage soup with fresh bread and butter.

Just wanted to let you know that I’m Jewish faith we call it stuffed cabbage. I’m to buy the meat and everything else make it soon. Then I will put into the freezer and keep it till I need it for the next holiday. It’s been a pleasure enjoying your resumes . Have a good day stay healthy and well. 👍👵grandma

Great recipe. Just like my mom's. What she used to do with that extra part of the cabbage is chop it up very fine add some chopped carrots and put it in the bottom of the casserole just like you did with the extra leaves. That way we had extra cabbage with are cabbage rolls and sauce. And we always had mashed. The sauce Is good on top of them too.

3:29 almost my and my late mommas Aggies recipe Use lemon juice instead of cider vinegar Will try it next time. Always make it sweet and sour like my meat balls. I use can tomato soup and fresh chopped tomatoes or canned whatever I have. I try to have fresh Challah to dunk in sauce as my adult kids always loved it. I use to make mini rolls for cocktail parties but who makes cocktail parties anymore? Not my friends😢I still cook. They make reservations 🥰Thank you so much You are terrific❤️At times I have to use toothpicks to hold them together 😂

Rachel, I have made Cabbage Rolls twice in my lifetime & they were too difficult to make that I would not try again. The directions I used in the past (long time ago) did not explain how to do any of the things you show in your video. You are AMAZING on how you explain each detail and to me this is a BIG plus. I got so hungry watching you show each step of cooking these that I was wishing I was there with you to sample them. I am going to try your way of making them because you make it look so easy. Thank you so much for not only your ideas but also your patience in showing all of us how it should be done easier but perfect. I WANT A BITE.😀🎼

I haven't made cabbage rolls in over 20 years. I make them a bit different and add a layer of saurkraut between the layers when I do them in the big roasting pan. It melds all of the flavours together. I also serve with sour cream. I'm going to give your recipe a try. They freeze wonderfully, too. I enjoyed your show. Thank-you

Her secret ingredient was chopped raw bacon on top while baking😋, her sauce was made with canned tomato soup. She also put some frozen peas and sliced carrots on top while baking. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe for the cabbage rolls. They reminded me so much of my grandmother’s cabbage rolls. You brought back so many wonderful memories of my grandmother and me cooking in the kitchen. She had patience and showed me a lot. My Mom was also a very good cook but she was very possessive in the kitchen. If it wasn’t exactly done her 9:39 9:49 way it became the wrong way so I always backed away from cooking with her. Therefore, not a cook today. I’m a 77 year old woman who had the best cooks around me and absolutely can’t cook anything. Don’t get me wrong I loved my mom but she took every bit of confidence my grandmother gave me and it got buried somewhere in my childhood. Again I’m so glad I came across you in the internet. I’m going to watch you and try some of your recipes to see if I can do it. I’m sure I can. Thank you thank you thank you so so much for sharing your knowledge and tips. I’m sure going to try the stuffed cabbage maybe for Thanksgiving as I will be alone and it’s a good time to experiment. See that I’m so looking forward to this.

Rachel, you're food always looks so tasty. I can almost smell the aroma. This cabbage roll recipe reminds me of my mother's. Mashed potatoes are definitely the perfect pairing! One thing my mom did that you may consider trying, if you like sauerkraut, is adding it to the sauce under the rolls. It's really good.🤗 You, dear lady, are an excellent teacher!
