The more we build, the more cool safety feature I discover in the Sling Tsi. No one thinks of Cabin heat as anything important. May be it’s not as important as your engine running well, but when you think of the conventional heating system in single engine airplanes. The cabin heat flows in from a shroud around the exhaust pipe. Mostly safe, but can be dangerous because carbomonoxide can find it’s way into the cabin with that system.

Another plus for liquid cooled engines. You can now have safe heat like cars have had for a century.

Being that it’s liquid cooled like your car I would’ve thought that type of heating system would be obvious🤷🏻‍♂️

And with a heater core like a car if u need a lil extra cooling for ur engine crank the heat up could keep u in the air a few extra mins incase of engine running hot situation

Another beauty of this system, is you can get heat on the ground on cold days with a fan blower.The heater does not depend on aircraft speed in forcing air thru a heater muff as used in conventional single engine aircraft.

So, it's a heater core.. I like how the aircraft industry makes it sound more complicated than it is to ramp up costs. It's literally the same as a car. LoL

Correct, but what makes this a really nice feature over the traditional heating system is there is no risk of getting CO2 into the cabin. The older aircraft are incapable of doing a system like that because they are air cooled, not water cooled. So TAF is taking advantage of the water cooled system and making a much safer airplane.

Yep. Liquid cooling, fuel injected, full computer control. Great , aviation has made it into the late 80s in terms of automotive technology. Now that will be 40 grand for that “high tech” airplane engine please.

@@nateb19 Lmao yeah, aviation is in the late 80s in terms of automotive technology because most of the ga planes around are from the 70s and 80s. That why we love experimental!!

@@KofiAsare0 yep sad state of affairs. You can thank the lawyers for that one( anytime a private plane crashes, they want to sue the manufacturer. hence insurance costs for the manufacturer is through the roof) agree experimental is the way to go.

great video as always. love the Sling TSI builds you always lear something, albeit something unexpected... at 2:53 I hear the exhaust-heater is of solid stainless steel aluminum... that I've not heard of before ;-) My rotax has a aluminum heat catcher around a steel exhaust but I guess that is what he meant to say.

That added coolant space is going to increase engine cooling efficiency just a little as well. not enough to mention, but it's nice when the side effect of a feature is another feature.

Hello. Thank you for giving us all these knowledge on different airplanes. My question is ...is there any 6 seater experimental airplane out there? I've 3 kids, 15, 10 and 2 years old. Sling TSI is my first choice but it only seats 4. Please let me know if you know any 5 or 6 seater experimental airplane

Cool :) I don't think you have to feel pressured to wear a mask for video use just to keep up appearances. If you are only a couple of people in regular contact, it's a non issue. And corona death toll in cali is after all no greater than a typical flu season so we are not talking about the end of the world. When did you last expect to die from the flu. Building planes is great but can't help feel there is so much more potential. After seeing the Lancair IV-P, what turbo and pressure cabin enables, I can't help wonder about combining the monobody construction of fiber composite and aero shape in a form compatible with easy pressurization. 915 is a good fit for the job if only Rotax could be talked off the price ledge. Crazy light weight sleek body with 2 or 3 tandem seats doing 500km/h high in the sky burning no fuel. It would be a game changer.

Liquid to air heat exchangers are more efficient than air to air heat exchangers, which is what air cooled planes use. This also has one more benefit; it allows for extra cooling of the motor, although I'm not sure that's going to be beneficial in an aviation application since airplanes don't rely on a fan to draw air through the radiator like a car does. This is the same exact system 99% of the cars on the road use. Old Porches and VW s used the dangerous and inefficient air to air method because they were air cooled engines, just like your Lycoming and Continentals are.

Great proven Heater Core system taken from the auto industry, this becomes another point of periodic inspection, heater cores over time can leak and fail, great way to put the hot coolant to good use.

I dont think its really a "safety feature". How many times have you heard of a GA plane crashing from a passed out pilot or an accident due to CO poisoning. This was maybe a bigger deal 50 years ago, maybe. But the fact that it just doesnt happen with the fact that many aircraft that use heat from the engine get certified. If there were any safety concerns theres no way planes would be certified with it. To me the heating system in the TSI is just wasted weight even if only a small amount, im sure it comes with its own mechanical or safety risks as well
@PhilipFly11
@PhilipFly11 4 жыл бұрын
If a pilot is incapacitated by Carbon Monoxide and crashes over water, or on land in a fireball, how often do you think that the NTSB would find evidence of that Carbon Monoxide poisoning? The NTSB, and other aviation investigators, do not have the resources to investigate GA accidents in detail. They are focused on airliner accidents. Recently, on 21 January 2019, a Piper PA-46 Malibu crashed as a result of Carbon Monoxide poisoning from a traditional exhaust heater. Nobody would have known about this but for the fact that the Piper had been chartered to fly Emilio Sala, a young professional footballer from Argentina, on a £15,000,000 transfer from one club to another. The aircraft went down over the Channel, between France and the UK, and was found on the seabed under 220 feet of water. It was too expensive to recover the aircraft, however, Emiliano Sala's body was recovered and a post-mortem toxicology tests showed a Carbon Monoxide saturation in the blood of 58%. A saturation in excess of 50% is generally considered fatal. The pilot's body was never found, however, he was sitting closer to the heater outlets and would likely have been exposed to a higher concentration of Carbon Monoxide. Almost all cars, except for the VW Beetle and Porsche 911, switched from exhaust pipe heaters to coolant heaters, about 100 years ago. Aircraft exhaust heaters are not safe. The fact that legacy aircraft are certified with exhaust heaters only shows that they are reasonably safe when new. Legacy aircraft now are 40, 50, 60 or more years old. Exhausts do suffer from hairline cracks and joint leakage. The problem on an air-cooled aircraft is, how else to heat the cabin?
@EJWash57
@EJWash57 4 жыл бұрын
Trust me, any gadget that takes skill and conscientiousness out of the equation get's slapped with the "Safety Feature" Seal of Approval. The cabin heat system takes advantage of the liquid-cooled feature of this particular engine - period. How hundreds of thousands of air-cooled engines using the exhaust pipe heat shroud system to provide cabin heat - that is still being used on new aircraft - have survived all these years is some sort of miracle?
