Thanks for that link for the straight edge. Al, I wonder if people realize how much that bench would cost if they could find one even close to that. Okay, thousands. That is why I say that if you don't have some building skills and you want to have a small homestead/farm then learn. You will save yourself hundreds of thousands. My dad died when I was 6 and my uncle helped raise me and he told us girls that he was going to teach us the basics so that we could take care of ourselves and be an asset and we laughed. However, I was the only one that took it to heart and on my small homestead, it has saved me so much money. Look at what Al is doing and even if you don't have those skills, learn the basics because there is lots of building out there. I just want to say thank you, Al and family, for being on KZbin and I'm a huge fan.

Dianne Edwards I agree, my father built houses and was a finish carpenter. I have always had better tools than my husband. And even though I no longer have the strength to do some of the things I want to do I can show my grandson how. We didn’t have power nailers and screwdrivers. My dad could sink a nail with 2-3 strikes.

Wire a couple of electrical boxes on your new work station. you can run an extension to a power supply whenever you need to move it away from an outlet. you can keep the saws plugged in and you will only need to plug in the bench itself to power up the saws or any other tools.

New work bench looks great! Looks like things are really coming together in the barn / workshop. I wouldn’t block your hens from the nesting boxes they will freeze! I really would put the same insulation in the hen house that you put in the sliding garage door. You will get more eggs and your hens won’t sleep in the nesting boxes! We really have increased our our egg production by having the insulation in the hen house and we have cleaner boxes!

Al I went with 4 swivel castors on my bench, works great, put it where you want! Recommend you get serious about reinforcing coops for both chicken flocks, and definitely reinforce your fencing..tighten up your premiere fence..flopping loose fence wont keep out coyotes or fox,, which is probably your most likely predators! You have a predator problem waiting to happen, so get ahead of it now, priority one, barn next. That is my opinion! Really like your new bench.

I always add electrical outlets to work benches as well as battery chargers. Wire it up then use a 10 ga cord to plug the bench into the wall. Add some cleats for wrapping the cord when not in use. It's less needed now with cordless tools, but there are some tools that I still use a cord like heat guns etc.

I have a portable table to which I mounted a couple of outlet boxes connected to a single heavy cord. That way I can just plug in the table and then plug in whatever I want to on the table, I have a longer "table" cord than I have with the individual tools, which gives me a greater range to move the table (and I just need to use one extension cord and don't have to unplug and replug my tools. Love how the shop is coming together!!

I like your round over trick for the melamine for getting rid of the chip out. It looks great. When you add your shop vac dust collector there is a switch you can buy that will turn on the vacuum when you turn on your table saw or chop saw. That way you won’t have to remember to turn on the vacuum separately.

Smoked trout are awesome. Especially those about 12" - 16" from very cold water. Maybe you don't have them on the farm, but I'll bet there are some near there
@donaldmiller86295 жыл бұрын
@ Brad Payn , Yes , there is a resevoir in the Conn. River which is not far from the farm. But I've never heard Al say anything about fishing there. I wonder how much someone would pay to have their catch smoked in a real smoke house ?
@bradpayn80585 жыл бұрын
@@donaldmiller8629 I can't tell you much about Conn., but I do know a little about how that would work in the Rockies in Wyoming. The best trout are in the creeks here. There are plenty in reservoirs too, but brookies are best. Lakes trout are better eating when you catch them through the ice, and before they get too big, but cold creeks are still much better. My Uncle, who passed away several years ago owned a custom processing plant and cold storage lockers. He butchered pigs, beef, deer, elk, moose, etc. and had a smokehouse etc. We smoked our trout there for free when several of us went together and had a great catch. Well almost free, we gave him some of the fish. I suppose it wouldn't cost any more to smoke a fish than a pork belly other than you would want enough of them hanging in there at once to make it worth it. Depending on the size of your smokehouse. It takes as much smoking to do a batch of six as it does 50, but there are game limits too. Here it is ten trout a day (brookies, less other trout) or twenty in possession - so you'd want small groups of people to combine their fish. My uncle wasn't licensed at a level to sell meat like a butcher shop, he was just licensed to cut or smoke meat that belonged to his customers and give it back to them. He could come to your farm and shoot your cow, haul it off in a winch truck, (or you bring your livestock still alive to his farm near town in a trailer, or he could sell you a live beef, then shoot it for you) or you could bring in your hunt or catch, etc, but his licencing for just that was expensive and required strict and frequent inspections. Often daily. There is an inspector here who covered two counties and he made the rounds nearly every or every other day. He could walk in at any minute. Basically, what I'm trying to say, I guess, is if you are going to charge anything for working on meat, you either have to keep it on the hush side, maybe swap favors with close friends and family, or if you go the legal liscenced route, butcher block, smoking for cash, publicly, you might as well go all in and make it your job -- you've already gotten past the same red tape to do it for hire whether you process something every day, or four times a year. Game Wardens and Brand Inspectors come just as often as the meat inspector does, making sure nobody has been rustling or poaching, and all your paper work, game tags, and branded hides are as they should be.
@donaldmiller86295 жыл бұрын
@@@bradpayn8058 , Al lives in New Hampshire . I was referring to the Conn. River which flows near him and has been dammed to form a reservoir near Al's farm. Ah , I forgot about the government !! They do their best to eliminate competition for big business .

Great work on the saw station Al. The automated vacuum switches are nice for that application. It turns on your vac when you start the tool and turn off delay so it pulls that last little bit after you shut off your tool.
