A group from my parish and I saw the film the other day. Several of us have been discussing it, and we completely agreed with your comments. St. Frances Cabrini was far more than a social worker or a community organizer. A "good" movie that could have been great.

I’ve been looking forward to your review and I had the same impression of the movie. It was beautiful to watch and I learned more about this amazing Saint, but I was left feeling that there wasn’t enough Jesus in the story.

Yes- was there was a sad lack of the name Jesus. I think we heard it once... maybe. Mother quoted Phil 4:13 at one point, but that was I can do all things through Christ.

I think it's one of the hallmarks of movies made to appeal to secular audiences that they glorify strength of character over weakness. Personally, I am more impressed by a weak person who relies on God's strength than by a strong person who relies on themselves. I wish people would "get this," but as St. Paul said, to the world, it's foolishness.

Her physical weakness is shown throughout the movie. What makes her so impressive is that she is spiritually and emotionally strong despite her physical weakness. I think the movie did an excellent job of displaying that.

Enjoyed the movie, how she became another St. Joan of Arc and took up her cause to help the immigrants children become human beings. Yes, you brought out very strong points about her faith and mission should of went hand and hand together. God Bless all who made this movie possible and we need more movies like this. I love history about our saints...

Yes- not a perfect movie, but then considering the other movie options out there, we can be thankful it was even made. God works in mysterious ways...

Thank you for the honest review of the movie. I always find that reading about a saint is more edifying than the "Hollywood treatment" of the saints, excepting perhaps the early 1900's movies like The Reluctant Saint and others. I haven't seen the movie yet, but my brother who is a deacon saw it. He said the same thing the movie was not Catholic enough. It did not show the nuns receiving the sacraments and practicing any catholic devotions.

Agree- we expected to at least see a rosary or two or an image of the Sacred Heart in one of the houses the nuns lived in.

I never saw the movie, but had heard a few things in regards to that it really didn't reflect her Catholic faith in an authentic manner. I have also heard that it was a somewhat a feminist movie. I cannot honestly comment, but since it is evident that many others do agree with the comments, it seems that what is a good movie could have been a great one! Yes- it could have been a true masterpiece. It just missed the mark on how much Mother Cabrini was devoted to Jesus and relied on him.

Yeah- it is hard to imagine a Catholic nun movie that is not very Catholic, but this is it. It is a very good movie in many ways, but it could have great. We are hoping a Catholic company will make a similar movie about St. Katherine Drexel. That is another story that needs to come to the screen!

I am not going to see it despite buying tickets I am very dismayed how it could be ok for anyone making a movie to deliberately and purposefully leave out the most important aspects of her vocation !!! JESUS, Lord and Savior✝️🙏🏼 instead of sitting in a movie theatre, I will read the book you recommended

I also thought it lacked her devotion to Our Lord as her motivation. Sort of came across as a “I am woman hear me roar” style. Could have been a more accurate depiction of her life as a spouse of Christ

Yes- the movie was released on International Women's Day, so the angle was definitely focusing more on her strength as a woman vs. her reliance on Jesus

I saw an interview with the executive producer who raised 50 million dollars towards the movie. He is a devoted Catholic. The scene where she enters the Italian senate does not appear in any books, however the sisters of her order showed him the newspaper clippings about it. I think it was an Arroyo interview on EWTN. The movie meant a lot to me as my grandfather, a son of Italian immigrants, born in San Francisco in 1888, went to an orphanage in 1897 after his mother passed away.

I forgot to mention something about how people looked at the Italians. On the 1900 census , you saw people listed as "white" or "colored", But my grandpa was listed as "Italian" like they were a strange other race...

What an odd thing for the director to say about a movie featuring a Catholic saint! Lol- we can only imagine what Mother Cabrini would say about it all. She never liked publicity, and publicity without Jesus... she would not be on board with that!

I am glad that I saw the movie because I learned things about the plight of the Immigrants, especially the Italians (although I am sure other nationalities also were discriminated against.) I did feel a lack of Catholicism in the movie, and I also have to say I bristled a bit at the way the members of the clergy were portrayed. I think you nailed it about the movie being a bit political, but I do think that the value of seeing the movie made up for its faults.

We agree, Ann- there is still a lot of good in the movie even though it was off the mark in some ways. Definitely worth seeing for the history alone- the plight of the immigrants was hard to see, but it happened. Mother Cabrini was truly their champion.

Yes- this studio makes plenty of Christian movies (which is wonderful), and there does not seem to be any problem mentioning God or Jesus in those, which makes this all the more puzzling...

I saw the movie with one of the priest and nuns from my church. I did like it very much. I lived a few blocks away where she is interned at Holy Church of Mother Cabrini in New York Washington Heights.

Well the only word mentioned in the movie was the word "God" to show she was a religious person. They could of thrown in a few extra words like Jesus, mercy, etc. I've watched other movies by Angel studios and their other Christian movies other than the Chosen, had more spiritual dialogue than this movie.

The book is not graphic, Brenda, and we think you would enjoy it. You could maybe see if your library can get it through interlibrary loan for you. It would be nice if a Catholic publisher would reprint it.

@@catholicmomanddaughter Speaking as a guy, l love long hair on women. My late wife was RC, almost became a nun. I never understood how hair length affects one's service to God. To me, if a woman loves her hair, let her continue to find joy in it, while serving Jesus. Thank you so much for your spot-on critique. I am still glad that the movie was made, but omitting the fact that Mother Cabrini credited ALL her strength to Christ is a cavernous flaw.

I saw this yesterday - I agree - the movie showed a strong servant of God but it’s as if they hid her Catholicism. Maybe Angel Studios needs a Catholic consultant if they are going to portray a Catholic saint! I think teenagers do need to see this movie. Not young children- but yes teenagers. It was so sad that there wasn't even a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the background somewhere. There were little hearts on the map at the end, so it looks like the studio was at least aware that this was important..
