We have good weather for them if we protect them in winter. I am still amazed at how fast they can actually grow.

Beautiful cactus 🌵 I loved it… I wish can have some of them in garden ❤from California
@andyroo302211 ай бұрын
California sounds like the perfect place to grow some cacti, even outside in your garden. I have a lot of big cacti at my new townhouse in big pots as featiure plants. One is over a meter tall Cows horn Euphorbia. A Euphorbia Ammak and a Euphorbia Ingens. These are tough structural plants with no significant flowers on these plants. They make up for it in their beautiful form though. 🌻❤

🌵 nice collection cactus but slow growing plant
@andyroo302211 ай бұрын
Some grow surprisingly fast, The red flowering peanut cactus was only a small piece as big as your little finger one year ago. The Trichocereus species grow 10 to 12 inches per year. The slow growing ones are the Ariocarpus.

If it weren't for grafting my two Trichocereus Bridgesii Monstrous, I would've lost them this summer. It rained constantly from late July thru the entirety of August. So many of the Trichocereus suffered that dreaded black ooze, but they can be cut and saved. My TBM mother plants, not so much.

Damn bro, I like mine in my greenhouse out of all the extra rain, although I have been moving some bigger ones outside. Winter can get cold and pretty wet in NSW Australia too. Try and get some cover from rain if you can.

@@andyroo3022 Yep, lesson learned. I purchased a small poly tunnel for next spring. I will also be repotting many with a more mineral based substrate. I could virtually water them every nite if need be, but you certainly can't unwater them...

They will thank you dor the polytunnel. I put a lot of coarse river sand in a good soil potting mix. The mix drains well and i use a fish based fertilizer at 1/2 strength in the growing season. I lost a few nice Astrophtum and a gymno to rot winter last year. I tend to keep these in terracotta and not plastic now. Most of my tricho are in plastic and they go okay.@@1neAdam12

I also need to get a greenhouse, or at the least, a Poly-tunnel! For years I've left mine out to catch all that summer sun... *and rain.* My current lineup is quite hardy, so they do just fine, but it's late summer September and any time after when I MUST be uber vigilant to keep the closest eye possible on the weather. One good rain would be a death sentence so late in the year!!

Cool, looking real healthy there. What kind of soil and fertiliser do you use mate?
@andyroo302211 ай бұрын
I use a good quality garden soil and/or potting mix. i get a big bag of course sand from the hardware store and mix about 1/3 sand with the soil mix for good drainage. Drainage is a must with all succulents and cacti. I use half strength Seasol or Powerfeed (these are fish based) and sometimes some miracle grow 1/3 strength. I even use some orchid food before, as this is fairly gentle and will assist in flowering. Just use weak solutions and only about 3 x times spread out over the growing seaso, between regular waterings with no fertilzer. Don't fertilize in winter and leave plants almost dry when dormant in winter. On very hot days i water most of my pots every day, especially the terracotta ones they dry out between waterings quickly.

Lol my gymno baldrianum is still in flower and we are in fall here in scandinavia
@andyroo302211 ай бұрын
Gymnos are great. They seem to go well if the light is bright enough and not so hot.
