This was the last performance from the original Cactus line up. A good number of music fans were introduced to the band through the 1972 sampler album 'The New Age Of Atlantic' which included the studio version of Long Tall Sally, which took the song from it's Rock'n'Roll roots to a much heavier rock anthem sound.
Line Up:
Tim Bogert - bass
Carmine Appice - drums
Jim McCarty - guitar
Rusty Day - vocals

I envy you lucky bastards who got to see them, I was born in '77 and was introduced to Cactus in my early 20's. These guys had amazing energy and should be remembered with the likes of Cream and such. If you ask anyone 30-40 years old here in the Midwest they've never heard of them. I love blowing their minds with songs like Parchman Farm and Bro. Bill.

I had just gotten out of the flipout tent when Jethro Tull went on! They started with 'To Cry You a Song' and it blew me away! I'd gotten the album in june and it was an eye opener to say the least. That was a wild festival; loved every minute of it. I'd hitchhiked from Cape Cod; devil may care about my job, and gotten there at 4 in the morning. Canadian bikers gave me a hit of acid for cigarettes...4 of them. It was a good deal! None of that anymore, though.

They played at least one more performance with the original lineup - they played at UMBC in Maryland Halloween night 1971. I still have the ticket stub. They arrived two hours late, but they arrived and it was one of the loudest concerts I ever saw. Opening act was a great local band called Black Manhattan and the second act was Alive & Kickin' which had changed its name to Bloody Mary just before the show. They were practically booed off the stage but they had to keep playing until Cactus showed up.

Yesir, I was rat there with ya. One of the best rock & roll and boogie shows ever done at the shell. Deep Purple was also good but after listening to Cactus I was not into DP's style. Cactus was so well received that they wanted to play a free show for the people at the Penal Farm (Now days Shelby Farms) the next day. I didn't make that show. But they returned to the Auditorium later that year maybe early the next year to record some tracks for a live album. All in all, I saw Cactus three times in Memphis. John Logan

I first saw them at a festival called Strawberry Fields in Mosport park in Toronto in 1970. No one had ever heard of them. McCarty (remember him with Mitch Ryder?) came out first and did a 4 minute solo...knocked me right off my feet. He's a great guitarist. Too bad this recording doesn't do his tone justice.

Probably better they didn't form at that time... yes, the original record sleeve notes inside BB&A tell the story you relate. Jeff just couldn't take being fronted by a bass player that is technically his equal and sang most of the lead vocals for the power trio. Michael, please check out Derringer, Bogert & Appice; a.k.a. Doin' Business As." (The only song I can remember Jeff singing was "Hi Ho Silver Lining" which is the adopted anthem for the some Premier League Soccer Team.)
