In this video I show a step by step of how to bypass a metal hose that runs under the throttle body and becomes clogged due to lack of car maintenance. This video shows how someone maybe able to unclog the metal hose that is blocking coolant from flowing if the issue is not as severe as the one shown. This is something relatively easy and very inexpensive to perform whether or not there is a visible coolant leak and the engine is overheating. I would highly suggest following along with the steps shown in this video if you are throwing your hands up out of frustration while attempting to address the overheating issue.
I have seen many videos on the coolant system for this vehicle from changing the thermostat, water pump, coolant hoses, radiators, cooling fans and replacing the overflow tank for Cadillac deville however no one has posted a video of this particular issue. I decided it may be helpful to others looking to DIY mechanic how to there Caddy. The Northstar motor is installed on this vehicle so this should help for those with that same north star engine.
This was a job I did for my niece as she had purchased her first car and it is a white on black 1996 Cadillac Deville. There is a special tool used to remove the water pump on this vehicle and can be purchased at a local automotive store. The store may have an option to rent the tool as well.

Great video! Sad how many Northstars are diagnosed as blown head gaskets when in fact, only the bypass hose is clogged!
@johnfox3845
@johnfox3845 3 жыл бұрын
That only occurs due to lazy or ignorant techs. On these engines the first step is to check the purge line for flow, checking the cooling system for proper circulation, and then testing the system for combustion gas intrusion. Having said that, I've only found clogged lines on cars that had stopleak added in an attempt to repair blown headgaskets. It's a shame that so many N*s experience gasket failure. In the vast majority of cases, the failure is a direct result of neglecting cooling system maintenance. Old coolant turns acidic, eating the gaskets near the head bolt holes. This allows coolant to come in contact with and degrade the threads in the block, reducing clamping force and allowing the gasket to blow. Finally, combustion gases pressurize the cooling system, causing air pockets and preventing nor coolant flow, which leads to overheating.
@lukebradshaw
@lukebradshaw 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnfox3845 I couldn’t agree more. 10 year, 100k or 150k mile coolant changes are death to an engine no matter what type of coolant you use. Had Cadillac required coolant changes every 2-3 years, many Northstars would still be on the road that aren’t anymore! People will disagree and say the head bolts pulling out is the cause. What they don’t realize is that corrosion causing coolant intrusion around the head bolts is what causes them to pull out. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance!!

After watching this I went the other way and replaced the metal hose with rubber straight to the inlet on the thermostat housing. I left the short metal hose under the intake inlet and didn’t remove the inlet at all. I just ran it straight across the block with a lil extra hose for good measure. Instantly brought the engine down to proper temp. Now after flushing radiator and engine independently and adding all Dex, it stays below 215 in the FL heat. Thank you so much, I hope this helps many more people.

I applaud your creativity and resourcefulness to keep your car from overheating .... however, here's some advice from a car mechanic who knows how to work on Cadillac cars: the throttle body is meant to be warmed by the "hot" mixture (of water and coolant) flowing through it to warm the air before it goes into the intake manifold, thereby expanding the airmass flowing to the engine through the intake manifold where the fuel injectors then add fuel the warm air so it burns in the engine. The car's computer (the ECM) monitors the mixture temperature to keep everything running well at "engine operating temperature (approximately 180 - 210 degrees Fahrenheit). By bypassing the hot mixture past the throttle body thereby NOT warming the air in the intake manifold, on cold days the engine may run OK but will not allow the air to the throttle body to be warm enough resulting in a rich burn (more fuel than air proportionally) mixture of air and fuel. The result is poor gas mileage and an engine that doesn't run properly even though you solved the overheat problem. If I had to do this fix to keep me on the road until I got to where I could fix the engine properly, your fix is ideal and comes in handy. However I don't believe your fix would provide a long term solution without adverse side effects to how your engine should run properly. To properly fix your car you should clean out or replace all water hoses (metal, rubber or parts where mixture should flow) to ensure proper flow. Good job though!

Well, that is a total crock. The air/fuel mixture will be gauged by readings from the IAT (intake air temp) sensor, and has nothing to do with why the coolant runs through the throttle body on these cars. The reason they run coolant through the throttle body is for when the car is operating at freezing, or below freezing temperatures, to ensure that the metal blade of the throttle plate doesn't stick or hang inside the aluminum throttle body. Aluminum sweats, therefore could cause condensation inside the throttle body, which would freeze, causing a stuck or sticking throttle.

Note Cadillac along with many other Manufacturers use metal line's on top the intake to prevent melting. You can use a high temperature rubber hose and get great results. A tip use the next size bigger hose for better flow. It works great. When breaking a HAVC system on Cadillac always use 2 Coolant seal pellets to reseal the system. Cadillac dealerships use them as well as the factory's.

Hello I apologize for the delayed response. There could be a small leak that is so little that it shows no signs of it existing. If you have not already done so you could try laying a large piece of cardboard under the car overnight and or run the engine for 15 minutes or so to see if there is any visible evidence of a leak. Checking the engine bay for wet spots may be helpful in addressing the issue. Also there could be a small leak in the cabin coming from the heater core. You could check under the passenger side carpet for any moisture. Other than that Im not sure where else to look. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching.

You may want to look into the heater core. They do get clogged and can prevent the coolant from flowing correctly. It can be a pain to replace however I've seen people do a bypass for the heater core by disconnecting the inlet and outlet tubes from the core and connecting them together with a pipe insert and clamps. I hope this helps.

Hey, great video.. Does anyone know what that metal hose with the crinkles going from the throttle body to the waterpump housing is? Trying to take it off today, the lower bolt broke off while trying to remove it. The hose appears to be for coolant, judging where its going (the water pump housing). Is there a way i can use a good enough screw and drill it in there since the head of the bolt broke off clean? , or will i have to drill tap it? Trying to take the easy way out, or at least not have to drill tap it. Any help is greatly appreciated. The answer is probably obvious to a mechanic, which i do not claim to be. I just do not see myself coming into that kind of labor money.

@DoItWithDave
@DoItWithDave 6 жыл бұрын
The Machete I honestly left the metal hose around the throttle body disconnected completely. From what ppl have posted on this the metal hose has something to do with the heat of the throttle body keeping it at a regulated temp. In my case I didn't want to purchase a new one and it doesn't seem to effect the throttle body at all. These cars are great but the overheating issue is insanely tedious to fix. The car in this video also had a heater core clogg. Living in FLA i could bypass the core as well and safe time and money. I hope this helps.

Do It With Dave I see, so you installed the new hose into the Hollow bolt str8 to the purge line but didn't attach it at the metal hoses surrounding the throttle body, got it. It's crazy how that lowered the heat levels. I cleaned out my purge line yesterday found a bunch of black gunk coming out of it. I didn't use your hose bypass method but I'm going to do that this weekend when it stops raining. So what temps were the deville riding at before you cleaned our the purge line and how does it run now in comparison?? And do you have a video on how to bypass the heater core???

Sorry for the delay in communication. If you haven't already had this issue fixed then it sounds like something that would allow a lot of coolant to leak like a hose or possibly the reservoir tank. Thankfully these things should be relatively easy to access. I would try filling the coolant lines with distilled water and running the engine while checking for the leak. It should be pretty straight forward.

The display on cluster board showed temp jump up to 260 which is way to hot for the car to operate safely. Since I posted this video the caddy 3 more hoses replaced that started to leak. I assume it was a result from replacing the couple things mentioned in the video and the higher pressure doing what it does caused the hoses to fail. In my experience coolant systems can be a pain from chasing all the leaks after fixing 1 or 2 components.

Ok I've gone through all the hoses that go to and from the over flow tank and took out the Purge bolt and there was no obstruction , and there is fluid flowing too and from the over flow tank. So while I was messing around the over tank I saw a relay plug or should I say half of one being as it is not connected to and thing. There is very little lead wire on it and it seems to be attached to something under the over flow tank? Do you know what sensor this might be? Wires come out one side but the clip side looks like the wires are cut.( 2 wire holes ) and also I noticed that there is a panel on the passenger side attached right under the windshield that has wires plugged into it but on the end it has an hole that something plugs into ? And ! more thing There is a shinny metal round piece that sits right next to the over flow tank and has a pipe that runs towards the windshield with a couple of valve looking things on it and a three way wire configuration 2 of the wires are connected to something but one is not , it is hollow and I was wondering if that is what goes in the hole on the wiring harrness by the windshield , it seems to fit in the hole.
@DoItWithDave
@DoItWithDave 2 жыл бұрын
So you responded with a lot...lol. I think the wire attached to the tank is a low coolant sensor. As for what is under the windshield it could have something to do with defrosting? The shiny metal, I have no idea. I'm definitely no expert I just do what I can with whatever information I can find on the Internet when attempting to fix an issue with whatever I'm working on. You may want to search for a Cadillac forum online and see if anyone has posted similar information as to what your inquiring about. Those forum groups usually have a lot of information to offer. I wish I had more insight for you. This was my nieces car at the time so I'm not able to pop the hood and see exactly what your looking at.

How about cleaning out the infamous "bolt with a hole in it" that is on the engine side of that hose? It has a tiny hole to allow steam and thus air to vent out into the surge tank. Yep, this obstruction causes air pockets which prevent the thermostat from opening and cooling the engine which causes head bolts to get stressed, and pull out of the block.
@LamassuSound
@LamassuSound 7 жыл бұрын
more info on that please
@davidjames666
@davidjames666 7 жыл бұрын
LamassuSound on the engine side of the rubber hose coming from the surge tank is a bolt that can be screwed out from the engine. The little hole can get plugged up with unapproved stop leak, or gasket material from a sloppy water pump repair or such. It is best to remove the bolt, and clean the little hole out, and not just push a wire thru it, as the gunk will come back and plug the hole up again. The purpose is to allow the steam that is created from hot coolant to vent into the surge tank. If this steam can not exit the coolant passages in the engine, an air pocket will form preventing hot coolant from hitting the tip of the thermostat causing it to heat up, and open (The hot air will not cause a thermostat to open). If your car is overheating, also check the waterpump tensioner to make sure it still has spring to it. Also the car should have 50/50 Dexcool and antifreeze. Too much water will cause too much steam, and the car will not cool.

Does it bypass the thermostat? And how will that effect the engine?
@DoItWithDave
@DoItWithDave 2 жыл бұрын
So this is an over flow line that sends coolant back to the reservoir when pressure is too high. I did this because the original line was clogged. It helped with engine overheating however it wasn't a complete fix. The real issue was the heater core. That was completely clogged and was stopping the coolant from properly flowing. If you live somewhere where you need heat the heater core needs to be replaced. If you live in a warm climate like Florida you can bypass the heater core and that should allow the coolant to flow as it should. Basically locating the heater core, removing the two hoses that are inlet outlet lines and join them together with a stent and hose clamps. I hope this helps.

My car actually started overheating after i cleaned the same lines. Builds up pressure on the top radiator hose but when not pressured up the hose feels like it has no water.

Hey there, after going through the entire cooling system the final clog was at the heater core. It can also be bypassed but if it's clogged bad it is a replacement.

what does it mean if my coolant reservoir isnt circulating to the radiator and motor?
@DoItWithDave
@DoItWithDave 4 ай бұрын
I'm not sure exactly what you mean. The reservoir should be a the fill line after the engine runs and the appropriate amount of coolant is added. If you drained everything then filled reservoir and the coolant level isn't dropping after running the engine it could be a water pump issue.

@DoItWithDave
@DoItWithDave 7 жыл бұрын
Hello sorry for the late response. It kinda sounds like the radiator may be clogged. Im basing this on what you commented about the left and right side of it being hot however the center is cool. Could be coolant pressure building up on both sides trying to make its way through the radiator but has no clear passage. You could try flushing the radiator then with the lower hose disconnected shoot water from the top and see if it makes it way out the bottom with ease. At least that way you can determine if the radiator is allowing flow.

The only thing i can think of is maybe the heater core. Turn on the heater while the car is running and see if you have heat coming out of the vents. If not try to get access to the heater core inlet and outlet pipes and removing the hoses see if you can get water to flow through. There could be a build up of pressure do to a clogged core.

I just bought a 96 Cadillac Seville. There was hardly any oil in it when I got it. I drove it home and got some oil in it. On the way home the temperature gage stayed below the half way mark. As the oil went through the engine; the noises it was making started to go away. I left it running for a bit and then antifreeze started coming out of the bottom.. Right below the surge tank.. There were two running lines of it. Please tell me any opinions.
@DoItWithDave
@DoItWithDave 7 жыл бұрын
Vanessa mathias check the tank for any cracks. If it looks good then the hoses could be the cause. Leaks can be very tedious so try not to loose your cool. I hope this helps.

Do It With Dave yes. ..there were cracks in the plastic tank on the end of the radiator.. I got a soldier gun and fixed them.. Haven't had any issue since.. at least in that area..lol. I am leaking a small amount of oil. I found where it is coming from...its a seal in a gasket by the spark plugs in the back. However, I don't understand why I don't see the oil level going down. any opinion on this? Plus, sometimes it misfires when I start it.. But the engine sounds really good.
@DoItWithDave
@DoItWithDave 7 жыл бұрын
Im glad you were able to seal the coolant leak. From what you posted about the oil the valve cover gasket could be the culprit. A misfire is not always cut and dried. There are many factors involved. I would recommend checking for any vacuum leaks in the engine bay.

@DoItWithDave
@DoItWithDave 4 жыл бұрын
@@Fernandez.1987 hot air is a sign that hot coolant is in the core, however it may have a back up do to a clog. I don't remember exactly were the core is on this car but it should be fairly easy to access. You could remove the inlet and outlet tubes and run water from a garden hose through the core. If it flows then heater core is probably ok. Also if the inlet and outlets are plastic take care not to crack them if you end up trying this out.
