Here are some things about your Cadillac and what you should do to prevent Overheating and solve diagnose, repair, prevent your 1998 Cadillac Northstar GM engine GMC from overheating or leaking. Don't wait for your check engine light to come on, or when your luxury sedan gets hot. If you don’t have extended car warranty, car maintenance insurance, you’ll have to do the maintenance yourself. Some of them are basic, but some of them your mechanic won't tell you. Also, check out the new type of thermostat for your engine that prevents it from overheating when your thermostat fails used auto parts, salvage yards, Pick-n-Pull, U Pull It, eBay. These types of thermostats can be put on any car DeVille, D’Elegance, Escalade, luxury sedan. See the KZbin below” tutorial” and it will explain more how it works. Watch this video a few times to develop your confidence DIY. Please note, this is not an ad for Dex-Cool. Do your due diligence on using Dex-Cool. There are those that say, "Never ever use the GM recommended Dex-Cool and the tablets." Others will say they have been using it for years with no problem. Dex- Cool says they have reformulated their product. Others say don't use Stop Leak, but the recommended Dex- Cool tablets are made with the same stuff. Cooling System Sealing Tablets Seal Tabs should not be used as a regular maintenance item after servicing an engine cooling system.Discoloration of coolant can occur if too many seal tabs have been inserted into the cooling system Napa, Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, O’Reilly’s. This can occur if seal tabs are repeatedly used over the service life of a vehicle. Where appropriate, seal tabs may be used if diagnostics fail to repair a small leak in the cooling system. When a condition appears in which seal tabs may be recommended, a specific bulletin will be released describing their proper usage. You do your research and you decide what you want to use.

The FIRST thing you should do to prevent overheating in these "engines", and IF your head gasket hasn't crapped out yet because of it, is to do a BYPASS OPERATION on the air bleeder bolt on the water pump housing. This bolt is hollow and allows any air to escape the water pump housing which, when air is present---voila! instant pump cavitation, and then the engine starts to overheat. If you know anything about outboard motors (or pumps) you know that when your prop is not completely in the water, it CAVITATES and the prop becomes ineffective. I cleaned out the air bleed bolt but it still overheated. After much research on this, I discovered that, sure, the hose from the bleed bolt goes to the coolant overflow tank, BUT, before it does, it connects to some metal lines that take a tortuous path through, around and under a metal plate under the throttle body in order to warm the throttle body which warms the intake air. This is NOT necessary or needed unless you live in the icebox areas of the country-and maybe not even then-could be just an emissions issue. This torturous path under the throttle body involves a number of actual 180 degree turns. The problem is, debris in the coolant clogs up that metal tubing, and is causing intermittent blocking of the flow of water (and therefore air) from the bleed bolt, and thereby causing water pump cavitation. The simple fix is to bypass it using the hose from the bleed bolt to the metal throttle body pipe connection. Disconnect from the metal tubing, cut and inch and a half off the end of the hose for a fresh end for the tank nipple, and directly connect the air bleed bolt to the overflow tank. This is the BYPASS. Before you connect to the tank, turn on the engine and if you get a flowing amount of dribbling coolant from the hose to the tank, you will be good. If not, you need to remove the bleed bolt, clean it out with a coat hanger wire, blow it out, and reinstall, because that bolt can clog too. If you then have flow, you will probably have cured the overheating while running down the road. It did with my 99 Seville. Mine still creeps up on the temp gauge after idling a while for instance, in a restaurant or bank , etc. drive through. Before I did this bypass, the users of the vehicle got a professional coolant flush and new thermostat and it still overheated. I think the radiator could be gunked up. I think another flush and a new radiator will fix this. I think this was a flawed engine design from the get-go (that is only one flaw-the spindly weak head bolts is another). The engineers, who have probably taken this embarrassing mistake to their retirement, or grave, designed an engine that is somehow pulling air into the coolant system, is letting air collect up in the water pump housing, and is causing the water pump to cavitate inside its housing, become ineffective, and thus overheating the engine. They were too far along in the design to start over because they actually had a test engine, which probably to their horror, overheated. So they jerry-rigged that bleeder bolt in there to bleed out the air. That worked fine except they decided to use that dribble of water to heat the throttle body warming plate (which gets clogged up), and then dump it into the overflow tank. Just bypass that throttle body line and go directly from the bolt to the tank. All I know is that it fixed my problem.

I drive a 2001 Deville that currently has 255,000 miles on it. I have done regular maintenance and repairs like idler pulley, water pump, 1 coil pack with plugs but as far as the engine that’s about it. I did have a bit of an overheat problem driving into Phoenix in 100+ temps but it didn’t go into the red zone on my gauge. Generally speaking I am impressed with the car.

Every older car I have , the first thing I do is coolant flush , and lower temp thermostat. Having a lower temperature, will reduce the pressure inside the cooling system. Yet to own a northstar, but owned lots of gm , and always always dump and wash out dexcool every 2 years.
@garonburwell9008
@garonburwell9008 4 жыл бұрын
man good ol internet info! the cap controls system pressure not the thermostat. most injected engines with a lower temp thermostat will never achieve "closed loop" operation and therefore never run in fuel control and eat a ton more fuel. lower temp thermostat in a fuel injected car is a bad idea. a working thermostat controls the minimum temp and doesn't have anything to do with the maximum temperature or overheating.
@dondesnoo1771
@dondesnoo1771 4 жыл бұрын
The thermostat allows the coolant to superheat so when it releases the fan can remove more heat than at a lower temp .so it's a mixed bag .but sometimes a lower temp will help when there are underlying problems as h.gasket

Thank you so much for this!!! My husband and I just bought a 98 Caddy DeVille S&S Hearse and the engine just overheated on us for the first time so it’s at the mechanic currently, who hasn’t gotten back to us yet about what the problem is. But when I asked about a different issue in a hearse forum on Facebook, everyone was saying to sell it or scrap it because the Northstar is a garbage engine. But we’ve already invested so much money in this car and we don’t want to give up on it yet. So we’re hoping we can fix whatever issues are going on with it and get many years out of it. But we’ll have to wait and see. Thank you so much for your input!! Any other info you have about repairing Northstar engines will be greatly appreciated!! 💕

Never ever use the GM recommended Dex-Cool and the tablets, as another commenter has already said...its Dex-Kill. We always flushed every STS coolant system to run crystal clear then would use only the best coolant in the European market specifically designed for aluminium (notice the correct spelling lol) engines. I am not able to get a lift so as to drop the engine/drive train, as so many videos have shown, nor do I have the equipment to roll the engine in order to get to the rear studs. And though I love my Cadi, unless I use it strictly for going to the food store a mile away, it tends to get hot after about 20 miles. I have blown air through the purge lines and watched the fluids flow out of them when they are apart and water is filled into them. I have no oil leaks or water leaks and the spark plugs are new, and the points are new, and the water pump is new and the drextol fluid is new with the correct mix, yet I can watch the temp gauge needle climb into the red on the gauge after about 20 miles. My usual Mechanic passed away not long back of ALS, and the rest tell me it's time for a new engine, but they also admit, they have not replaced many Northstar engines either, which makes me wonder. Jake in Canada says he could do the job but the stop an let the engine cool from Florida to canada , man would that be a long trip. Though Jake has told me about a guy in the Tampa area, who could do the job, but that is still a new Northstar performance engine or a Jasper engine. Either way, that still means dropping the engine, and the price of a new engine and the core charge. Plus the most important part, the wife, and her thoughts... Looks like I will just have to let this one go and find another car, if I can. Roomy and all the extras and the cadillac ride... Perhaps I will find a way to keep the cadi, but leaving it parked in the carport is no longer acceptable. It is nice to have a nice car, but since I am not Jay Leno, my collection is only for cars that I can drive every day, so... Thanks for all the great thoughts and advise

Sometimes the head gasket will crack where the water parts right next to the exhaust exhaust gets into the coolant and causes the vehicle to run hotter. Or head bolt stripped same difference.

Humm, i would get another cheap car just to drive around in. these cars are old and anything can go wrong with them and if you're not good with a wrench, repairs will add up quickly..Green engine coolants are designed for use in older cars (think pre-2000), ones that contain a lot of steel and copper components in the cooling system. To protect these metallic parts from rust and corrosion, Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT) gets added to the mix.And then we have orange antifreeze, which also defends against corrosion but instead of being geared towards older cars with lots of metal, it’s made for newer cars with more aluminum and nylon parts in the cooling system.his transition from steel and copper to aluminum and nylon started back in the 90s. Due to this change, GM introduced DexCool. DexCool is a type of coolant that uses a mix of different Organic Acid Technologies (OAT) to help to help inhibit the buildup of rust and corrosion. The cons of orange coolant manifest when it begins to run low. When this happens, oxygen may invade the system, creating a buildup that can clog and damage internal components. Thankfully, orange antifreeze should last as long as 5-years. Meaning so long as you remember to refill it, your engine should not experience any issues.The short answer - no. When orange and green antifreeze mix, there’s likely to be a chemical reaction that causes it to thicken into a gel-like substance. Since your engine needs fluid rather than gel, it’s unable to effectively cycle it through the system. Without proper cooling, various components may overheat, leading to failure. Take your water pump, for instance, which is in charge of pumping the coolant throughout the system. If it fails, you’re looking at a replacement cost of as much as $750. if you’re going to use a different antifreeze, you’ll need to flush your cooling system first, which carries a cost of about $100. Hope this helps

Noooo. They overheat when the older version's head bolts expand a little and causes a leak of coolant. Also, some tend to just toss any old coolant in there... I did... but as he says in the comments this engine needs Dex-cool. I am on my second, a 2005 DeVille, and before I bought it I opened the overflow tank and sniffed the coolant. It smelled perfect. A leaking gasket has a distinct smell. I drive it normally, seldom revving it high and makes sure to change the oil and use Dex-cool, etc. Been just fine so far. Best engine I ever had. Good power and economy. 32 miles per gallon highway, 18 to 20 city, belying their claim of 24 and 18 respectively.

Here are my thoughts. I've had many some great some not so great. What is comes down to it keeping the cooing system clean and do it on a regular basics. But here is where the issue lies..Its Oil Changes when they top off your fluids they don't understand dexcool and mix the green coolant with dexcool and in time this will cause a sluge in the system and over time it will fail. This was only because i had a 1993 Saturn and it was getting hot. When we did a flush we saw what in can do in time put in green coolant cars is just fine no overheating its been 2 years. and done the same to my 1998 Cadillac hearse and its perfect. just my take hope it helps someone

I have an 2001 STS really nice car, for when the head gasket blows, a new engine is $22,000, repair kit for the bolts plus repair is $5k , remanufactured with performance mods $3k, everytime I drive the car hold my breathe hope the engine doesn't start to overheat. i will keep the car, just park it until can get the car operational once again. I had the radiator crack, i replaced the radiator, thermostat and all hoses, the 7 heater hoses took 10 hours to replace. The stop leak is known to plug heater cores amd radiator tubes, you drive the car stop it settles in the opening hardens and slowly it will plug the cooling system components, be careful using it.

Hi live Music , i would never by a new engine, there to many great used engines out there. Unless you have deep pockets. The new bolts installed can run around 2 grand. If you do it yourself i believe the kit runs around 4 to 6 hundred bucks if i remember Correctly ( the one without the inserts ) . Cadillac was telling us to use these pellets. which was made of the same stuff as Stop leak. The problem was, I believe, the original Cadillac owners who aren't mechanics thought if you just put more pills in it will ensure the engine from leaking. But instead it would just clogged the system and in turn the engine would overheat, and because the engines originally had poor head gaskets they were the first ones to Blow. In one of my videos I replace my heater core because one of the nipples cracked because of a poor soldering job. But the core fins were not clogged at all after examining it. The other video I did was inspecting the Coolant Purge line and that was pristine. I owe this to the previous owner plus my regular system flush every 6 to 12 months. Yes if you put to much Stop leak as you said it will plug up anything. I myself will add about 1 to 2 tablespoons int the system and regularly flush my system, I have been doing this to my car for the last 5 yrs or so. Like a GM Master Mechanic told me - Little leaks turn into big leaks. (Regarding internal parts in the engine). Thanks for your input.

I think these Northstar engines are not cooled very well and this leads to the headgaskets failing. The fans are set to come on at 223F. They should be coming on at 200F in my opinion. I did a test where both fans were turned on(thats on high) and the coolant temperature would not stay at 203 degree F at an idle. The rpms needed to be increased and held at 1500 so that enough coolant would circulate to cool the engine and keep it at 203 degrees F. When you are driving on the highway what is your coolant temp averaging? Are you able to maintain that coolant temp at idle with both fans blowing on high? Would you do this test on your car and post the results? One way to force the fans on is to turn on the AC. Another way is to go into the diagnostics and manually turn the fans on.

Enjoyed your video. Thanks. My car is a 2004 Cadillac Seville. Almost 6 years ago, its "Add Coolant" alert was displayed. My mechanic believed I shouldn't have to add coolant unless there was a leak in either my radiator or head gasket. Because he couldn't find a radiator leak, he suspected it was the head gasket. He topped the coolant off and put AlumaSeal in the radiator. He said AlumaSeal was the best product to use because my car has an aluminum block. I think we both felt that was a temporary solution. But, it worked magic! The "Add Coolant" alert has never again displayed and the car has never overheated. If my car did indeed have a head gasket leak, I'm wondering if the AlumaSeal fixed it permanently - or, is it more likely it never had a head gasket leak to begin with? What do you think? I'm considering a coolant fluid exchange but am concerned that may put me back at square one relative to whatever caused the "Add Coolant" light to come on in 2015. I know, under normal circumstances, a coolant fluid exchange would be good for my car - but I'm afraid of upsetting the miraculous results I've enjoyed thanks to AlumaSeal. I'm wondering if I should just leave well enough alone. What do you advise?
@notsofast2325
@notsofast2325 3 жыл бұрын
I would have tested to see if there was a leak, using a pressure gauge attached to your radiator fill cap and check the readings. if the pressure drops , then look to see if there are any leaks outside the engine, if not then it could be a head gasket. if you want to change the coolant because you think its old, i would buy a small antifreeze test gauge to check, they look like a eye dropper and there cheap. check first before you change it to see if its still good. ( you may not have to change it depending on your driving habits ). If it looks like you have to change it. I would change the antifreeze, but have some AlumaSeal handy in case your light kicks on again. Some guys would automatically put it in, but beware if you put to much it will clog your heater core. I was losing a little fluid in my 98 deville ( it wasn't overheating )and i added Alumaseal and it stop losing fluid. But when i change my fluid i add about 1/4 of the recommended dose. One thing i would also check is to see if the fans are kicking on at the right temperatures. You may want to check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHObXqFofrF3mNk Good Luck.

When I turn on the headlights it drops to 12.2 to 12.5. Hey, g'mornin... I have two batteries in the limo. It was wired that way by Superior Coach, the builder of the limo body. I replaced both batteries. One being a regular starting battery. The other being a big deep cycle battery which is located behind the drivers seat. It is secured in a box, bolted to the floor. I changed out the alternator as well. The alternator I took out was a 140 amp, and I ended up replacing it with the same amperage. Larger amp units were ridiculously expensive. You will know, the ludicrously location of the alternator on the 4.6. You tube videos are plenty on removing the alternator, which almost all show major removal works of many components, fans and rads trany lines and such. One comment I read on one video, told of a small plate under the alternator, held on by 4 bolts. Removing that plate revealed an easy access path to drop the alternator out, super easy. All I had to move was a few wire looms just inside the plate area. I pulled one of the three fans to give the alternator a bit of room to turn, and provide access to the alt mounting bolts. Total time was a couple of hours. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. Not as easy as swapping the alternator on my Mustang, (10 minutes) but still not as bad as all the youtube videos make it out to be! Long story short, all is back to 'normal'.

@@notsofast2325 Yes, the radiator was drained and flushed and re-filled with the cadillac recommended coolant, the dexcool stuff and looking into the radiator fins, they look good and have been sprayed clean with a house water hose. Plus the thermostat was replaced with a new one. To the best of my knowledge, when the local mechanic said that if the radiator block test changed colors, that meant exhaust fumes was getting into the radiator. He told me that it probably meant dropping the engine at a shop and dismantling the engine to re-drill the head bolt holes and putting in either studs or inserts. Then he told me of the day to drop the engine and the day to re-install it and a couple of days looking for problems, besides the bolt change. I took it by the Cadillac shop and they said it would take too long to do the job so they refused to do it. I think they just wanted to sell me a new car. Jake even told me that he could do it if I got the car to Canada, then he told me of a shop in Tampa, about 160 miles away. Then the wife got in on the act and said to hold off on that fix and get a different, car, or another non- northstar engine car. Even a local mechanic said they could install a Jasper engine, but that they had not done so yet on a cadillac. A first time training job, I guess. After all these great answers, I feel it best to just get another car, and fix it when the corona virus is over. Plus, without taking the engine apart, I do not know how to magna flux it to check for cracks, of which everyone tells me is very unlikely.

My experience/opinion/do’s&donts: If you see a leak small or big get it fixed as soon as you can. A little leak can turn into a big leak and a big leak can turn into a big problem. The owners manual tells you “do not run a Northstar on water. If you do you will blow a head eventually” It also states “Use ONLY GM approved products” etc. People are hardheaded and cheap and that’s the wrong thing to be if you own a Cadillac. When it comes to the cooling system this is when you really don’t wanna be cheap. Get the GM DEX-COOL coolant (not the 50/50) and never use green coolant. David James - NEVER put ANY kind of stop-leak in Dexcool… ever! Search KZbin for: dexkill. Something about the chemical makeup of dexcool makes it coagulate and clog up every cooling channel in your engine when mixed with a stop-leak of some kind.

Tommy TMT i did see videos showing this, but for a car that is properly maintained and following the service intervals, and using the correct factory recommended sealing/stop leak supplements, there will be no issues. When I purchased my 1996 Cadillac brand new, I had the coolant drained and refilled every 4 years, and I made sure the supplements were added. 22 years later, and all is fine, and I never needed any work done on the car. I believe all the cars on KZbin were both neglected by the owner, and improperly serviced by the grease monkeys.

Notsofast good read. The article didn't mention that manufacturers used to add bars stop leak into the coolant at the factory because of the porous aluminum castings. Shops convinced owners that the Dexcool turned to 'mud'. - what a messy time. Also the repair shops reused tty headbolts against manufactures warnings. Any time there is a major shift in fluid formulation, there is trouble - except the upgrades in Dexron transmission fluid. Ex. Dexron vi

@@notsofast2325 I don't know exactly why but the only motor that you can put into my car is a y coad not a 9 coad motor.. I guess a newer 9 coad motor has a lot of different parts that are impossible to see by just simply looking at them . The y coad and 9 coad motors look exactly the same sitting side by side in 2 different cars .But they bottom line are not the same and can't be inter changed . I've owned I think 4 or 5 northstar cars and I've read evey thing I could ever find about doing any kind of upgraded swap on them . The L37 from the early cars is a high output and makes more power then the newer cars.Thats what my1993 collector siries STS has . You can definitely tell it's a faster car then my 98 Eldo it's got a 1/4 the miles as my 98 too but I know for a fact. L37 make more power they look just a lil bit different then a y or a 9 coad . One eazy to see thing is the engine covers on the L37 are made out of pot metal not plastic. I've been playing with these cars for a long time now and really at the end of the day I want a more practical motor in my car then a northstar .The 5.3 LM7 that everone thinks is an LS but it's actually not because it's got a steal block not aluminum is the motor i want to use . And I'm 95% sure No one has ever successfully put one into a northstar based car . If you know someone who has please inform me of it I'd love to get some tips before I actually take on the project. The stop leak he used will plug up his radiator and heater core. I've seen people use that cheap stuff before, and later on he will be replacing his plugged up radiator. The heater core will be plugged up also, but since it is a major job to replace, the car might not be worth it. There is a much better stop leak available by the name of BlueDevil that costs from 25.00 to 65.00 dollars at parts stores, but it's worth it. How well did you monitor your coolant temperature? Did you have the coolant temp displayed so that you could watch the temps in different driving conditions? What does overheating mean to you? Temperatures above 230F is overheating.
