Why do you pronounce the v as a v soind and not a w sound?

Æ is ay or a-e? It's not clear for me. I think they merged the A and E together 'cause it looks good. Why didn't they keep them separate? GRATIAS TIBI AGO.

Because in Medieval Latin "A+E" became a digraph where only "e" is pronounced. In Classical and Late Antiquity this did not exist.
