Vienna Austria is definitely what Billy was referring to in this song. He did a Q and A on disc 4 of his boxed set where he answered the question about the reason for his using of Vienna. In the interview he was walking down the streets and he saw a little 90 something year old lady sweeping the street. He said that in Vienna the people no matter how old still want to be useful, and in America we are quick to dump off old people to the nursing home because they've outlasted their usefulness. But Vienna waits for you depicts a usefulness to the unusable. Live your life slow and steady but don't kill yourself doing it.

Vienna, "the capital of classical music" might be the dream of a young piano prodigy (hmmm Billy Joel?). One who has obsessed over making the most of his talent might take a moment to reflect on such focus above all else. That’s what I hear in this song.

I really liked your review and interpretation of the lyrics! this has always been my favourite BIlly Joel song, with its beautiful lyrics and wistful feeling. I read on Quora that he wrote it after visiting his long lost father who was living in Vienna; he was starting to get very successful in his career, and getting caught up in the fast paced lifestyle of fame. He saw an older woman in the streets and realized that he would get older one day, he should appreciate and enjoy being young, success and his career would come in good time.

Good Reaction... I first heard this song in an epsiode of Taxi (1978-1983) { Taxi - S04 E02 "Vienna Waits"}. It is a thought provoking song... I've always wondered IF Billy Joel was referring to music superstar and genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He died in Vienna, Austria at the height of his musical talents December 5th, 1791.

He was referring to the city. He came up with the idea in Vienna that life is a marathon, not a sprint. You don’t need to achieve everything so early.

Billy Joel's parents divorce when he was a teenager his father moved back to Greece married another woman and Billy Joel has a step brother he's talking about going back to meet his step brother at the peak of his career be very cautious you very careful this is new for you Vienna waits for you

In an interview, Billy Joel said he wrote this song about his brother who wanted to go into the priesthood in Vienna. He was warning his brother not to rush into his decision to become a priest. When I heard this song for the first time, I thought it was about a girl named Vienna.

Too much dip on your chip with that statement. Let’s pump the brakes a little. This is one of the best songs off one of the greatest albums of all time. It’s straight up slanderous to say any Billy Joel cover is better than the original.
