It is difficult not to feel defeated when you give your pets the world and it just doesn't seem to be enough. You are doing everything in your power to keep your piggies healthy and happy, but just like people sometimes you can do everything right and still have illnesses or health issues pop up! I am so glad that Butters has continued to do well on her pain meds and am sending all of the positive thoughts and well wishes I can your way for a smooth passing of those stones!!! Watching Huckle and Berry together was so precious.

Oh no!! You have had such a hard time lately with illnesses, I feel bad for you and the sickly piggies. Fingers crossed Butterscotch will pass the stones on her own and both her and Berry will return to full health 😍 I understand how frustrating it is when you do everything in your power to keep your pets healthy and then in steps lousy genetics and screws your whole world up. You are a wonderful person, you aren't harsh or stuck up at all, you are very knowledgeable and helpful to all piggy owners here. Keep on being you, your dedication is heart warming🤗

You're right, this is the reality and most people just don't get it. When I hear people in a panic because they can't afford a vet visit, or they don't have a ride to the vet and they are just wanting to treat themselves, it makes me crazy. Because of poor planning many of these piggies out there end up suffering. I sure hope people listen to what you have to say and take it seriously. We're sending all the best wishes to both of your sweet girls. Get better soon babies!

Well I can't afford a vet visit but I make sure to keep an eye on my girls because I wouldn't want anything to happen to them. If anything does happen my grandparents can help out. It's not because of poor planning it is because my mom's job just stopped paying well.

sweetie, I have learned so much from your videos. You are an inspiration. I think the things you commented on about unexpected illnesses with piggies needed to be said. My three little piggies have been better cared for since I began watching you. When my Pippysqueaker's died last July, I almost gave up. He had to have surgery at 6 years old. His breast nodule was swollen and had a blockage. You had a piggy going through a lot then too. You gave me hope that I was doing the right things. I adopted 2 more piggies frome other places and am up to three now from the original 2. I would like to thank you for your continued support and inspiration and give a litte back to you. You are awesome. Don't ever stop being you! Lynn

I totally know how you feel. I've gotten guinea pigs at a young age and raised them on a well balance diet and provided them with the best I could. I also rescued a guinea pig last year he was 2 years old and he didn't have a very good life style; he was living in a cat carry cage and have mouth sores and ingrown teeth. In the past year I've had to take him to the vet several time for cysts, bladder stones. I am just lucky that in New Zealand it is a lot cheaper for guinea pigs to be seen by a vet and be treated.

I'm a new subscriber. We inherited the neighbors piggy who got out and lived in our garden for months very happily until the cranky lady next door scooped him up in a net when she saw him. We weren't prepared so we got the cage from the people (they didn't want him anymore) and went shopping. We are newbies and don't have a lot of $ but we will do everything we can to give him a nice life. We named him Pascal, he's a tri-color and adorable. We are new fans of yours!

I'm sorry to hear about her stones :( I know exactly how you feel. We had both our boys pass away at the beginning of the year from it. We thought it was our diet so our new pigs are on a strict low calcium diet now but the vet said could have been breeding issues as well. It's an awful feeling because you try so hard to prevent it but sometimes for whatever reason were dealt this card. You're doing your best and I commend you for it! based on research that i have done, yes guinea pigs can be noisier than hamsters, but most of the time as long as you turn the light off at night in the room their in they will hardly make any noise, my boys just lay down and go to sleep because they know when the light is out it's night night time.

You are beyond a first class piggie Mum things do happen no matter how well you care for your pets. I too wonder how people can neglect theirs pets and nothing happens to them whilst those who do their best and research about their pets do get problems. I agree about how much pets cost. I only have 2 piggies as I only have room and the funds to keep 2 in the manner I wish to. They are very spoilt and get the best of everything and are in a 2x6 c&c. I get so much contentment and happiness seeing them enjoy life but am always thinking how I can improve their lives more. I still have so much to learn. Thank you for your great videos your chatty cleaning ones are my particular favourite but I love them all.

We've had a bad couple of weeks too. 2 weeks ago our girl had what we thought was ovarian cysts. $270 for 1st visit (exam, X-rays, ultrasound, meds) and $125 for ER vet for breathing trouble. Made it to surgery but lost her in surgery (turns out it was kidney tumors) $330 for that. Now this week we have bladder stones too with my boar. $270 for first visit (X-rays, urinalysis, meds) and surgery will be $600+. We got a care credit card to use specifically for vet care. It is so hard to have a sick pet when you do have a way to pay but it's so much worse when you don't have the money.

I've watched a lot of your videos and just fell in love with guinea pigs. I just love the sounds they make. It sounds so sweet and it's a good feedback to know what's up, as you so wonderfully explain in your sounds video. I previously had rats. But for approx. the last 2 years I have been without pets. Usually, guinea pigs are associated with children, as pets for children, a child's first pet etc. I wonder why and should I feel weird to get guinea pigs as a grown up guy? I'd like a C&C cage like yours are. Unfortunately, C&C grids aren't sold here and all the pre-built "guinea pig" cages have closed tops and seem small. Thanks, love your videos.

I can definitely attest to everything that was said in this video. We have quite a few pigs and for a long time we can go with no issues (we've got for upwards of 2 years), but then something happens and you need funds. Recently one of our pigs had a hurt foot. Turns out that it was just some swelling, but the vet visit for that was about $250. Then we had another that just stopped eating and his visit and medications were somewhere around $275. It might have been a month in between the two occurrences. The visit alone runs $80, then the xrays are easily $120+, then the medications, etc. Vet care for these little guys is definitely not cheap. PLEASE consider that before you decide to adopt.

I love the Nemo & Dory print!!! For you have any suggestions for my Taz he has severe arthritis in his neck and little in his back legs!! The vet has him on Metacam was 3.5 now since it's working and gonna have to be long term we cut it back to 2.0 with no issues...I've heard of MSM and seriously thought of winging him over to it and see if we can get him off the long term Metacam... Do you have any advice for us?? I understand where your coming from I have 7 dogs and 2 piggies they are my children...It was $600.00 to find out what was wrong with Taz it probably would have been cheaper had we had savvy vets in the Dallas area!! I had to tell the vet almost everything right down to the critical care!! Needless to say it took them a week 1/2 to come up with the diagnosis and start medications He lost a total of 3.5 oz that he hasn't gotten back!! He's doing great now! I just can't ask the vet what to do so I've been asking people like you that I trust to know what's good for these baby's..He finally takes his meds from the syringe every night..It was so wonderful when I had accomplished that with him!! Thx for any and all advice in advance..Worried about the side effects of the Metacam long term!! All though he acts like he's 1 now days instead of 4 LOL!!! Thx Loved the video!! So glad someone is telling these people how much these piggies cost!! People don't realize & it's different everywhere it's also our job to learn as much as we can to help our piggies too! In the US piggies are not well savvyed by our Veternarian's!! Sad although true !! Take care Shey

I am not aware of what MSM is?
@Sheywh128 жыл бұрын
It's a natural powder used for animals for the help of bone & arthritis joint health...It has no bad side effects like the pain medications do..Its in all your over the counter medication for animals with joint support etc. You can google it!! They now sale it straight and several people have recommended it to me for help with Taz a lot of Piggie rescuers and such that Valerie knows..I've just got to find out how much I need for his size and how long to give before winging off of the Metacam...Thx Shey
@skinnypigs18 жыл бұрын
Barnaby was on Metacam (low dose) for almost 2 years and never had anything negative happen because of it. You can certainly try the MSM if your vet says it is safe, but my honest feelings are I highly doubt some powder natural product is going to work if he was having such a horrible time before the pain meds.
@Sheywh128 жыл бұрын
That's the problem I can't just ask my Veternarian's advice as She thinks he was okay loosing 2oz in a week It took her a week 1/2 to put him on meds and with the help of a specialist in Fl. She got his diagnosis I had to ask for Critical Care then she was very skeptical that he even needed it as He seemed fine in his weight as far as she was concerned...I paid $600.00 for me telling her to take X-ray they put them to sleep to Take blood work I didn't like that..He's actually on Meloxidyl not Metacam which is given to dogs and she swears it's the same as Metacam Being in the medical field I know it all the same as what we take called Meloxicam She went over all the horrible side effects right down to organ failure that it can cause in long term dosing...If it wasn't for Valerie telling me to tell her enough is enough and to get a diagnosis for this baby and get him in some medication.I probably wouldn't have him here today!! .I mean he lost a total of 3.5 ozs before getting one drop of medicine The critical care I had to demand for as she thought his weight was fine..She thinks all Piggie weight 1-2lbs maximum..She also suggest you feed them a high calcium diet a lot of the things we feed our piggies isn't even on her list of foods...She likes Kale Spinach cabbage etc. When I got that sheet it blew me away!! Anyway I say this as to let you and others know what we go through in the US finding a good savvy Guinea Pig Exotic Veternarian!! She's the closet one for 100 Miles that work with Guineas at all...Thx for all advice as I'm pretty much in my own.. I don't know what I would do if they were real ill He would have died before she figured it all out..They don't take it as a crisis in timing when a Piggie is sick like we do!!! Take care Shey

Poor piggie :( I know just how you feel, my piggie Pandora had a vet trip yesterday and she's got a stone. Just makes me feel awful even though I give them the best possible life I can but she still got sick. She's not that far off 7 years old though so she's starting to show her age a bit. I've rescued all my pigs, they all had bad starts so I can't account for what damage might have been done before. This was a really important message though, if you take on pets always plan for there health costs it is so important! I have had Guinea pigs in the past they never had any health problems happen. Guess they & I was lucky :) I have one pet rat left , her cage mate passed . They where both 20 months old . Was my second pair . I decided that's it for getting more rats after my last one passes . Can't handle them not living much longer then 2-3 years old :( Was thinking of getting more pigs , but with them also having heath problems . Only vet that treats pocket pets is over an hour away .. Guess more thought will be needed on my next pet . Love your cage set up , all your pigs are so cute !!

It really is hit or miss for the guinea pigs with massive health issues, but I do find all of them need the vet at some point even if it was just for a small hay poke, so having an exotic vet you trust is a MUST :) I know a lot of people have to travel a decent distance to get to one, so just depends if that is something you are up for :)
@precious014e8 жыл бұрын
I know not a lot of people think about it, but they do offer insurance for animals and it isn't very expensive for the benefits you get. I had VPI for years and it was roughly $200/year but they covered 90% of the vet bill. You were only responsible for covering the cost of the meds and that 10% they didn't cover. This saved me a tremendous amount of money. The only downfall of it is that you have to pay upfront at the vet and then your vet signs a paper (VPI supplied it) that states what the diagnosis is and along with that you send a copy of your bill for that day. I really liked their service but I haven't had it since 2012 so I am not sure how much it has changed. Right now, I have a credit card that has 0% interest for 6 months on any veterinary related service or animal food so I just use that and break up the bills if I need to. My elderly cockatiel (over 20 yrs old) and my guinea pig both fell ill in the same month and I spent over $1000 that month plus the 30 minute drive back and forth multiple times a week for about 6 weeks. It can be draining but I would do anything for my animals.

I'm not sure you will respond to my question but I seem to have flies in the house whenever I use bedding. I really want to get fleece and get a cubby system for the cage but it is all so expensive but I want what's for my piggies. I just wanted to ask what you think would be best?

Hey, I have 2 boars and I was wanting to get another guinea pig friend for them. I'm not sure if I should adopt another male or a spayed female, will my boars fight with a third male? or will they fight over the females attention? or does it really not matter? I know that sometimes their personalities collide, but I was wanting to know which would be a better choice. If you know which would be the better option that would be really appreciated! Love your videos and your passion for your fur babies by the way!
@skinnypigs18 жыл бұрын
3 boars living together is rare, I wouldn't recommend trying it. You cannot add a female to a pair of males, that would be a full out war. If you are financially able to have more guinea pigs and have the room, I just would be adopting another pair and not messing with an already happy bond with your current males.

I live in the Netherlands and I have a great vet and of course I have had my share of vet trips with eight Guinea pigs with quite serious problems like abscesses but I have never paid over 100 euros (120 dollars?) and that includes meds and if necessary surgery! I am shocked at the vet bills you have to pay, is it normal?
@skinnypigs18 жыл бұрын
That is normal for Canada yes.
@superbguineas73728 жыл бұрын
it just depends on the treatment given and the vets you go to, guinea pigs and rabbits are classed as exotics so need to see vets that have good understanding of them and know how to treat them properly.
@superbguineas73728 жыл бұрын
See my 1st part down below now followed by this part as a continuing bit to the one above. Because guinea pigs and rabbits have to see exotics vets which are more clever then normal vets that's why the price can also be more expensive. hope this answers your questions about vet prices.

Do you think that rabbits are more prone to sickness than Guinea pigs/the other way around, or are they the same? I have two rescue rabbits, that are only about 8 months old.

I have a question.. what do you say wen people ask you why you pick up there poops with your hands I do it too and people ask me why I do it and I never know what to say.. btw you are a GREAT and AWESOME guinea pig owner
@skinnypigs18 жыл бұрын
I just say it isn't like picking up dog poop with your hand, their diet is hay and veggies, it is a hard pellet and doesn't bother me one bit.

people just dont realize the reality of owning pets. just because they are small animals and not a dog or a cat it doesnt mean they dont require the same treatment. when my rat Nes got sick, i took him to the vet. cost me about $85 for the visit and antibiotics and people thought i was crazy. "its just a rat. it will only live for a couple years anyway." thats what i kept hearing. i dont care what people think, these ratties are my babies and i will do what i can to take care of them.
