This is the new gladius. Looks like an old CB500, handles very easily. It is very permissible, great for newer riders, or whoever wants a more relaxed ride.
Predictable power, predictable handling makes this a surprinsingly good generic bike.

I love the way you talk about all the bikes you ride. I am subscribed to a lot of channels, but you seem to be able to describe all the different bikes bikes you ride so perfectly when it comes to us normal riders. So many test rides I see are just compared on how fast/flick able they are. You tell us that and also tell us whether they are god commuters etc... Keep up the GOOD WORK. :-)

I’m going to get one of these for my first bike. I have always liked the look of the SV650 in aesthetics and performance. I’ll be in my low 40’s when I get it and simply have no desire to go really fast. I just want to have fun. Pretty much just park my truck during the warm part of the year and get around on my bike.

I have been riding my 2000 SV650 for a year and a few months clocking just over 29000km, for a mid size bike it's probably the best all round bike. Mine is still the carburetor version non ABS, filters through traffics like, a 300, and without a silencer it absolutely creates a good street cred. On breakfast runs it keeps up with the big boys and the semi fairing keeps me seated securely at speeds well above 180 Km/h. Suzuki has been making this model since 1999 and it has been used on track too. The SV cup is popular and probably still around in the UK. Glad its back with some positive changes.

Great review, in my opinion, one of the best bikes in the category and in that amount of money, with a proven robust and strong updated engine with a very interesting sound aka V2, a nice feature for new riders is the low rpm assist that prevents stalling the bike that could be very helpfull at heavy traffic. (I like the classic looks of the bike but its just a personal preference), at last i would like to see a comparison with its true competitor the mt 07. keep up the good work !!

Thanks for the review! I just wish you compared it to the FZ-07 (MT-07) instead of the MT-03. This looks like a good bike since it has ABS option and it's easier on the insurance (ABS is kinda hard to get here in the USA). The four cylinder super sports are hard on the insurance where I'm at (I've been quoted $240 a month) and I think this kind of bike probably a good option.

I watched this video several times now, and in a moment of clarity i realized that it is quite degrading for the bike to be compared with an mt03 and a cb500(f). This one is a lot more of a bike than the 320 Yamaha, only common is the ease of use and the noob friendly orientation. In Greece CB500f costs brand new 6.700iah euroes and this one is on offer for 6.400ish euroes. You get a 650 V twin instead of a 500 parallel, twin disk braking system instead of single, better suspension, better transmission. This one looks almost too good to be true if i am honest, and if it suits me well it will be mine! Don't get me wrong, the evaluation is great, honest and informative, the placement of the moto next to MT 03 and the CB 500f though, rather than the MT-07 and the Z650 is unfortunate.

sounds like a linear power curve... probably enough power for the street. I don't like the headlight cowl on the SV650, it reminds me of Bumble Bee on Transformers, doesn't match the retro front theme. I guess this could be easily changed though. The headlight cowl and paint on the SV650X is a step above, but not sure I'd like the clip-on handlebars, that would be annoying on the street I'm guessing.

I liked the ER6, Z800 is so overweight for me and the Honda was cool but I falled in love with the MT 07 and I chose it. It has personality, agility, great torque and looks great with a few things. The only thing I didn't like was the stock exhaust sound, and I changed it for a Roadsitalia Projsix. Great in the city and in the twisty arid roads of Almería.

kind of like nc700, but you wont hit the limiter (hardly ever, although i have twice) on the sv650. The brakes are rigged for novice riders. They will bite but one has to pull lever much harder. Performance brake pads will elevate much of this. Otherwise i agree totally with your review. My second bike since 1980's where i had several 750 and 1000 bikes. The nc700 first and now the sv650x 2018 have got my confidence and skills back to where they were thirty years ago i believe. I will in another 6-12 months go with a fast 750 or perhaps a sv1000. wait and see on that,no rush. Good review byw.

Why not? Gladius built on original SV-s and improved, I only saw good reviews on it, until 2015 summery Suzuki manfuctured them. The new SV-s more imroved like Gladius, but specs and specifications almost the same, but new SV-s are more expensive and _ugly_ as hell. They look like a bike from 1995, but my first Hornet with old circle lamp had analogue speedometers and looked good. The new SV-s displays are digital but old ugly lamp? Gladius looks better IMHO.

Is the SV650 that much different and more rideable in terms of power, handling , clutch, brakes , than the Triumph street triple? What i try to say is that i am a new rider and want a bike for a long time and not to change every year :P Do you think i could be bored after some months with the SV ? beacause the street triple is one piece of art as a machine , as everybody agrees, BUT can't tell if it is a begginer bike... although they say it has VERY LINEAR power delivery! ( i.e. MT-07 doesnt have linear delivery in power and torque and kinda scared me when suddenly full throttle ://////////// ) Hope you HELP me ! :) CHEERS

I have ridden both MT-07 and SV650a. The MT-07 is a hooligan machine and the engine, combined with very low weight, made for difficult riding around town. It's a rocket though. The SV [I bought one] although not feeling as powerful [it's heavier] is without fault.. Nice in town and at speed. Doing 90kph in 6th gear and open the throttle it accelerates very nicely! The MT looks like a tacky piece of bling to me, so I am glad I opted for the Suzuki. Suzuki feels like a quality machine in spite of it's bargain price.

Only issue was wet spark plug caused some rough running, but it was after riding for two hours in torrential rain and after a long descent. Engine braking is very strong, as Cager notes. I did one track day, no it went well (No chicken strips) and not embarrassed too badly against some bigger bikes such as s1000r, mt 10 etc.. suspension is a bot soft for me at 6'1" and 110 kg. I will upgrade in a month to something larger/quicker, but I think it is a great bike. I did test ride a Street Triple, and that handled better and better brakes but AU$4k more.

Can't view your videos on my phone anymore. Maybe the definition is now too high. Anyway, it looks great on my laptop. Good review, but I think you will have put off a lot of potential owners who don't see themselves as "learners".

Cager, what's your comparison of this to the new SV650? I found the SV to be slightly "angrier", but I'm wondering of that was mostly due to the different intake sound and gearing. I'm wondering what one of these with slightly lower bars would feel like. It would be great if SUZ offered cruise on these bikes. They beg to be toured on.

what crack pipe have you been smoking, this IS the new SV650, and you're asking him to compare it to the new SV650?

dude, should you be throttlin' those new bikes so hard? Is there not a 1000km break-in period for new bikes in portugal? I don't think, that checking the top speed is a part of new engine break-in. And also, new engine does not have the performance of a properly broken-in engine..

I disagree, the break-in period is there for a reason. All the bearings need time to sit, especially crankshaft and camshaft plain bearings. Also piston rings need to sit into the freshly honed cylinder. Otherwise you are in for undesired freeplay.

1990 I disagree as well, break in period is something one should not take lightly. Unless you don't care about the engine or will sell the bike very soon.

I have run two new bikes in in a fashion approaching the Motoman method. Both engines ran fantastically and used very little oil and were models which have a tendency to use oil. Look up the method on the web. I'd be interested in what you think. Both of you.

I read that method. I kinda agree with what he wrote, but still, that's a method for new piston rings. Nothing is said about actual wear on camshaft plain bearings or any bearings whatsoever. He only focuses on piston ring seal and cylinder wall wear as if the engine did not consist of any other components. I would say, that motoman's method can be good for an older engine with honed cylinders and new rings (and/or pistons). Not for a completely new engine.
