I’m guessing this time of year the crocs are hanging out in a tavern drinking, smoking, and playing cards.

Hardly high tide. Maybe tide coming in. If it was high tide you would be swimming with the croc's.

Anyone know when they put the concrete roadway in. I suspect they constructed a steel cofferdam beforehand to put that in. Would be interesting to see photos of the construction!

I believe it was in the 60's. There is some old photos of some construction happening where it looks to be in the dry season and quite shallow, but it looks to be rock...unless they were clearing it to put the reinforcement in before concrete. There weren't as many crocs here back then. Culling began in and around this time until numbers dwindled to about 5,000 left in the 70's. Now we have an estimated 100,000 crocs as they're numbers are going crazy again. Sorry but I'm a year or so late! If you google photos of when cahills crossing was built, there's photos on there that come under ABC flashback from the 60's.

@@Breeza-s5t Good info - I was actually working at ERA Ranger in 2005/06 and fished at Cahill's a a few times. Unbelievably dangerous place if you don't know what you're doing. BIG CROCs in that local and probably a lot bigger now. Luckily the work crew I was in included a local Darwin boy who knew the area and what NOT to do.

@tonywilson4713 cheers, I lived in Darwin in 2005 and 2006, went to Kakadu a few times swam near freshies but never Cahills! One stupid thing I did do however was drag a tinnie through waisted deep merky water at Buffalo Creek whilst trying to get to mud crab pots on low tide. Locals were yelling out 'ya crazy girl' thinking back to it now, I was young about 20 or 21 and dumb! I knew about crocs but became complacent after too many frothies! I cringe everytime I think of it. There's a clip on KZbin on how they catch them there. The video shows the boat ramp I used. Silly girl. Now you won't find me even remotely close to the waters edge in croc country. F##k that mate🤣🤣

@@Breeza-s5t Yeah similar sorts of things here, but NOT that bonkers. I few places I was fishing at times and then I'd realise how close to the water I was. I remembered one Rob Bredl's (the barefoot bushman) docos on the big snappies and he showed just how little water they can hide in. He stood in one of his croc pens and there was a narrow ditch with water in it. It was about 1/2 a meter wide and about 10cm deep. How showed how deep it was with a stick. Just poked it in and showed how deep it was AND THEN said there's a 4m croc right there pointing with the stick. AND THERE WAS NOTHING TO SEE. Then he started dropping chunks of chicken until he dropped one close enough and then it exploded. I looked but couldn't find it here on YT. It might be in one of the longer vids however. What he showed was that so long as those crocs can get below the surface you can't see them unless the water is very very clear.

@tonywilson4713 you know what Tony...Funny because that EXACT same description of the barefoot bushman description with that croc in the shallow water I happened to see on a KZbin short probably only a few weeks ago! Don't know what it came under but he was bare foot the water was filthy and yep it would be such a narrow puddle that most people wouldn't think twice jumping across! They're such scary animals yet I am super fascinated by them. I went to the Croc farm just near Yepoon in QLD mid last year and it was great. I got some awesome video of the guide holding a chicken carcass above one that was caught in Rockhampton at 5.3 metres. I'm pretty sure they called him Fat Tony. The size of his head was just unbelievable. And the sound of their jaws snapping shut with the pure force is really something else. All the yanks and other tourists kept comparing them to their 'gators'...Nah guys, totally different game park here 😂 These are aggressive and dominant. Gators are swamp puppies. Cheers for sharing these stories as I am so in awe of them and also Great Whites. PS Tony Wilson sounds so familiar but it's probably quite a common name!! Not from VIC are ya?? 👍

six inches of water can be pretty powerful if the water is moving fast enough, because water is heavy.. That kind of attitude could get your car wrecked or you killed.

@7150285

You mean 0.6 meters mark... Anyway EVEN 0.5 meters (which is 20 inches) would be enough to swept an SUV away. IF the current and the flat rate and speed of the water is fast enough...

Cool shot. Takes a bit of guts to do that knowing the dangers of what is in the water. Unless absolutely necessary to get to the other side, wouldn't be doing it just for fun.
