Our group is playing gurps right now. We decided to try it and put d&d on hold. I really like not having a class or race system and just using a point buy system to flesh out what your character is

My major complaint with Cairn is the spell system is 100 spells that vary from useless to game ending. But I love the minimalist stat system and rolling low.

This system is not for me. While the fear of death is interesting for the characters, the limited carry capacity and the (food and water) survival part is my second to last favorite part of RPG.

I view it as like maintenance, like going to the bathroom or showering. I don't care about that for my character

I love rules-lite games and old-school games (born in 1974, began playing in 1986). However… my issue with Cairn is that despite all of the imaginative backgrounds, only equipment matters. Equipment that any other PC can buy after char gen. So, there’s no difference between the cutpurse or field warden at all outside of that. Not that I want a ton of rules, mind. But acknowledging it only in the context of equipment….available to anyone is…really weird and pointless it seems. Guess I’d rather OD&D or B/X or T&T or RISUS or the Fighting Fantasy Introductory RPG or any of their clones (most especially the FF RPG clone Spellzard!.) Again…wanted to love this, but, no. Still a bunch of inspiration within, however, so I’ll give it that! Cheers, guys!

It's a nice rule system, I threw in classes, races and all 6 Ability scores, now it's a fast paced bx dnd😊

I am not a big fan of these 'lite' games. I love more complex games because I love adding details and uniqueness to my PCs. Cairn is the absolute opposite of Rolemaster.
