Right-o. The Women's NCAA final outdrew the Men's. I wonder why? Was it the sudden popularity of women's basketball across the board? Why was women's basketball suddenly so popular? Will the 2025 Women's final draw more viewers than the men's? We'll see. I'm betting on no because Clark won't be in that game. Clark is the x-factor 100%. Which is why it is so dumbfounding that the WNBA has largely turned a blind eye to her. There seems to be little acknowledgement from WNBA headquarters that Caitlyn Clark alone has returned their product to relevancy. Add in the fact that many other players seem to have a heavy resentment that their job is still there because this phenom has brought eyeballs to screens and butts into seats. I find the style of play in the WNBA generally not the style of basketball I want to watch. The leaders of the league should consider why Caitlyn Clark is so popular and try to cultivate that image rather than just offering more of what they already had (which wasn't all the profitable, was it?). If they did this then they might build something sustainable. If not then people are going to continue to focus on games with Clark in them and to ignore the rest of the league.

@@MDGmonroe I haven't seen much worse and well understand that physical contact is a natural outcome of the sport, but the contact should be incidental and not intentional. In my opinion some of the hits on Clark have been incidental, some are debatable, and some are very clearly excessive and intentional. I played organized basketball for a long time and have followed it on many levels for much longer, and I know the difference. Some fans of Clark may be new to the sport, but many of us are long-time basketball fans who have only recently paid attention to the WNBA. I believe that the "the WNBA is a physical league" trope is used as an excuse for some over-the-line aggression that does not belong in the game of basketball. It's clear to me that Clark is not like or wanted by many and that she is getting targeted by some as a result.

@@francesw.6774 If you’ve played sports then you know there are times when some will intentionally foul you or target you. Doesn’t necessarily means they dislike you. I’ve played basketball, football, and soccer. I love the physicality and contact. Like she said in the interview some of those interactions are memorable, I have scars I look at sometimes and reflect on a moment when things got spicy and it only made me want to go harder. I’m sure CC feels the same way, she didn’t ask anybody to defend her and she’s not helpless. Let them play, enjoy the game and stop complaining so much.

@@MDGmonroe I get all this, but I think in the WNBA it crosses a line at times. There is a big difference between an intentional foul for strategic purposes, and targeting a player with hits that could have serious injury and even career consequences. Personally, I don't think that level of aggression is good for basketball. There are enough injuries that just come with the sport. Anyway, it's ok to disagree about this. We just see it differently.

No mention of 17% of the leagues flagrant fouls were committed against CC. They are quick to jump at a narrative of racism among new fans, but completely disregard the motivations of the players to cheap shot any chance they get the player who could actually make them rich. The WNBA despite this years massive success is still a business that lost 200 Million dollars this season. The Players currently have Profit sharing in their collective Bargaining Agreement just like the men, but there isn't anything to split at the end of the year. Imagine working any job for a company that loses that amount of money each year, and truly believing that you are grossly underpaid for your services. The WNBA is a picture perfect example of cultural disconnection with reality.

Here's more specifics on the flagrants: 17.6% (6 out of 34; was 35 but they later rescinded one of Taurasi's) were committed against Clark, and the next highest were 1 player who got flagrantly fouled 3 times and 2 players twice each. That's a big gap and pretty outrageous especially when Clark is not a dirty player and never says a bad thing about any player in the media (yes she talks some trash on court as do quite a few others, but usually Clark's is in response to someone else coming at her first).

It's solely to do with Caitlin's rip-roaring style of play, which makes people jump out of their seat when she executes a logo 3 with no time at all and defenders only 2 feet away, it's her 80 foot passes dropping exactly in a team-mates hands and the bounce passes that are so swiftly executed and unexpected that the defenders are all 'WTF?', it's her drives to the rim where it looks impossible for her to score but then she manages to wriggle into a position where it ends up being a simple layup, it's her commanding presence as she comes down the court after an inbound, like a blitz chess player, looking for the strengths and weaknesses in front of her and sizing up the best opportunities to score. That's why millions of people are watching the W on TV and tens of thousands are buying tickets to games.

11:55 - Napheesa Collier gives a great answer here! Usually, the anti-equal pay critics use the argument that the women want the SAME AMOUNT as the men. However, clarifying that the WNBA and other female athletes are just hoping to be paid according to the value that the market will bear is important. Granted, in the past, the league wasn't making as much, so they weren't enjoying the same perks as the men. However, I think now that that has pivoted in their favor, charter flights, better hotels and such are coming. Now, hopefully, higher pay based on what the market will bear is on its way.

The reporter asked a good question to the Commissioner which is why whenever he brings up Clark the Commissioner says “the rookie class.” ESPN pushes the rookie class narrative as well and they’re wrong. If it’s to build rivalries, well the competition for Clark are the other 4 players who were top MVP voting/ 1st team All WNBA, specifically A’ja Wilson, Collier, Stewart. It’s not rookies. And you can’t overstate enough how Clark creates this. Her two NCAA tourney runs received record viewership - almost 19 mil the final in 2024 and about 14 mil the Iowa game against UConn. Those are NFL numbers- MLB, mens hoops no one else gets those. She got big numbers the year before too. And some of that did rub off on the WNBA. Clark’s getting good numbers in the WNBA too; her last playoff game got 2.5 million. But I’m not sure if the WNBA ever breaks a million viewers without her. If the league wants to set up rivalries, it should get off trying to compare her to other rookies and compare her with the other 1st team ALL WNBA players. The Fever are set up with a couple other all stars (Boston and Mitchell) to compete while the other rookies really don’t. Finally, If 60 minutes really wants to report on the sour grapes from other players/ former WNBA players about the attention Clark gets, it should also report that I’ve seen no reports that actual fans at games make inappropriate comments, hold up signs, whatever. It’s online trolls most of whom I bet don’t even watch the games. Alyssa Thomas said it’s the Fever fan base (on the night the sun ended the fever’s season) and she should apologize for painting way too broad a brush on the night their season ended. At the least, she should say thank you that Clark and her fans have generated the revenue where they don’t need to fly economy and stay at economy hotels anymore.

The commissioner explained it very well. What if Caitlin gets injured? What if Caitlin decided not to play in a league and just went out onto a basketball court alone? Would she be able to sell out arenas and merchandise in the same way as playing in this league? Of course not. You have to give the league and other players in it some credit. There are some really good players and some really good, positive role models for the kids. They showcased a few of them with Napheesa Collier and Aliyah Boston. That isn't to say that part of the problem with the WNBA is their connection to woke politics. Politics poisons anything it touches. But the women's college game is strong and there are many good players who will be feeding into the W in the next few years to help solidify the league and start moving it closer to the more professional approach of the NBA.

Normally the Rookies don't even make the team. They get drafted and they get cut, not even making a roster spot. This season you have a bunch of Rookies who not only found roles on the teams they were drafted by but they also made meaningful contributions and have new blood to a lot of franchises throughout the league. CC is the lead but the fact that the rest of the class isn't just fading away after a season is what the story is hinting at but not clearly stating. The W is brutal

It is pathetic that WNBA, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, commissioner, refs, players association, Nike & Swoops have continued to try & destroy this young woman by cheating & lying! 62 records broken in her rookie season! Who has done this??? Nobody! They are so disrespectful & hateful! Horrible customer service! To tell the customers they are not wanted or needed because of jealousy & envy.

As someone who had followed the W closely this year, I'd like to challenge two narratives. One is that racism against black players is happening. Crying racism with zero proof is the latest tactic to discredit Clark and the new fans. Jealousy is a helluva drug. Two is the commissioner insisting on putting three other rookies in the "growing the league" conversation. Sorry ma'am but no one knows who those people are. They did not sell tickets and anyone who looks at the actual numbers knows the truth.

"One is that racism against black players is happening." By a few trolls on the internet. The real racism we've seen in spades, this year, has been institutional anti-white racism, specifically directed at Clark. We've seen it from players, the Media, and more subtly, from coaches and the league. We've seen no open racism against black players. We've seen lots against Clark, and without apology. Much of what some black players are complaining about is push-back from fans against the blatant attacks directed at Clark. The toxic WNBA isn't used to having people call them on their toxic behavior. They're used their few followers letting them get away with it.

Unfortunately the commissioner still doesn’t understand why people are watching. Until she realizes why, they will continue not to profit. When Bird and Magic came into the league and the league realized what they were doing you know what the league did? They sold Bird and Magic to the country. That’s what needs to be done with Clark. No offense to Collier, Wilson, Sabrina, Taurasi, or any of the rookies the commissioner mentioned nobody is traveling and watching on TV for any of them. They watch and travel for Clark. Once they all accept that they can hop on the coattails and enjoy the ride.

What is she supposed to say out loud in the 60 minutes interview? She's using this unprecedented exposure to try to promote the other players as well. It's the playoffs, she hopes to draw as much attention as possible to the other players, hoping that something sticks. Then next season she can promote CC as you said. If she goes on 60 minutes and says CC is the only reason you should watch the league, she pisses all the players off, makes the league look weak because it stands on one player (not 2 like Magic and Bird/Lakers and Celtics), and now that CC is out, she'd be telling everyone there is no valid reason to watch the playoffs anymore.

Sigh... sports channels are turning everything in to professional wrestling : ( The referreeing has to improve... if you do that, and have consistency, you'll protect your investment in top players and insure a league that we can appreciate. They already make more than they deserve considering it's a seasonal job for a business that loses money. Let's not pretend this is a league full of world class athletes. Lol, ok. The statement of Its not about one player is generally a true statement. The machine was there before CC and itll be there after. She needs to say this or else there will be issues with the players. However no one is stupid. We all know it really is about CC, taking said machine to the next level. When you got ATL averaging 3000 peeps and they fill 17000, its not a secret why. We've seen all the stats, the CC effect is absolutely real. Im rocking WNBA apparel, my son is, stuff is selling out like hot cakes. This was not happening as soon as last year. And one more thing to peeps that bring up A'ja. Phenomenal player, best in the league and world right now. Deserving of MVP and it wasnt close. Shes a dog on the court, powerful, smart, confident and a leader. There is a difference between a casual fan and a purist. A purist loves Aja's game. Mid range, low post, spin moves, blocks, rebounds, stat stuffer. A casual fan doesnt care too much. They like flashy more. This is the reason all eyes go to CC. Its the difference between watching Embiid play vs Steph Curry. Both phenomenal players, but the consistent sauce with someone who doesnt "look" the part is the intrigue. Lets all be real here. We've never seen anything like CC in women's basketball and thats why theres unprecedented excitement. We've seen Ajas. Lisa leslie, Tina Thompson, Sylvia Fowles, even Stewie to a degree. Liz Cambage was dominant at some point, scored 53 in a game. We've seen it. No one seen anything like CC, just like no one seen anything like Magic, or Bird or Mike or AI, Shaq, LeBron, Curry and now Wemby. Crazy time for Womens basketball. Love it!!
