I’m 26 years old and have worn makeup maybe five times on special occasions 😂 my mom doesn’t wear makeup, so I was never taught. I would always tell myself that I was going to ‘reinvent’ myself between each school year and start wearing it, but it never happened. I love sleep too much, I’d rather wake up last minute and just throw my clothes on and leave. 🤷🏼♀️

I completely agree with you & appreciate the fact that you brought up expectations from society about makeup. This was a great video & I respect you so much. I am personally a professional makeup artist so I apply makeup to others & myself, which is why I created my channel. I wear it to express myself, but I don't feel I NEED it to be beautiful. You're so gorgeous without & with makeup by the way!!! I always ALWAYS think about your natural beauty when I watch your videos. 💗

We are a social animal, which means a part of where we take the information is from socialisation. So you are "socialized" by your parents whom are the first socialisation agent in your life. This is where the stereotypes about men and women are embodied : parents act and speak differently to their kids depending on their gender. So, girls are required to be pretty, we give them toys that revolve around the housework, etc. Boys do not required to be presentable : we let them play outside and go wild. Particularly true when parents call their kids: we may say "oh hi beautiful" or "my little girl" to girls and to boys we say "my big boy" or "my champion". I don't know if you see it, but, girls' self-esteem lie on beauty, which is not a long-term happiness contract you sign up for. Because they were socially rewarded for their beauty, they will always search for that reward by focusing on maintaining their physical appearance. However, if they are not pretty one day, they feel self-conscious, their self-esteem goes dramatically down, etc. That's why we use makeup: to always have a good ratio of self-esteem. (fake self-esteem) If they were socialized in another way, they wouldn't care much about makeup and probably would act like "boys". Personally, I just stopped wearing makeup. A week ago. And, it feels so much better.

Even further, it could be interesting to discuss the guilt behind not being able to go vegan, such as family or financial issues, dietary issues, regional/geographical constraints, etc.

You are a natural beauty and definitely do not need makeup but respect that you want to wear it whenever you please 😊 I personally wore makeup in my teenage years and then I completely stopped wearing makeup in the early 2000s 😁 I felt as though I was shielding or masking myself from everybody else and do not like wearing anything on my face. I also found it very odd that it was a social norm and almost expected for women to wear makeup when men have no expectation to wear makeup. So, I quit wearing it daily besides working for a certain company in the early 2000s. It is very freeing 💕

Every woman’s body is hers to do as she pleases! To each their own. If you want to wear a full face of makeup, go for it. If you’d rather not be bothered to wear any makeup at all, that’s cool too! As long as you’re doing it for YOU. :)

I completely agree with you in saying that its the "why" we wear make up that is most important. Throughout high school and my first year of college I refused to leave my room with out wearing make up. I felt I needed it to look pretty and feel comfortable in public. Eventually I realized I would have to leave my dorm room without make up to hangout in the hall with friends after I had taken it off for the night. Slowly it became more comfortable and now for the last 2 years I ONLY wear it if I'm going out on the weekends or if I have time to do it for fun. I always loved the process of doing makeup but now I love being bare faced AND full glam! Confidence in our bare skin is so important! You may be an influencer, but I think you showing its okay to have both options, so long as you're happy, is whats important and should be realized by everyone that its okay. It doesn't have to be a clearly chosen For or Against (:

Hi Caitlin! I just want to add some input. I also watched a lot of makeup people on youtube when I was in High School and my first two years of College. I had my mini makeup collection and would spend all my money at ULTA and Sephora. During College and High School I wore a full face of makeup almost every day. After I graduated and started working full time, I still wore makeup but not a heavy eyeliner anymore. Then I moved abroad to Italy, where I am writing from now. There is just something about packing all of your belongings into two suitcases that makes you realize how many things you own that you don't really need. Now I just have the basic products and I will put on BB cream, concealer, fill in my eyebrows, blush, mascara and just a little bit of a matte brown eyeshadow on a daily basis because it makes me feel more confident and pretty which just makes me feel better about myself. People who know me know what I look like without makeup, but when I go out, I do feel like I want to be wearing it, and I think that's okay. I save so much money now, not buying cosmetics products all the time. I honestly have started liking minimalist makeup a lot more, because I do think that I just want to highlight my features, and not cover them up. I agree that makeup can be a beautiful art form, but for me, and where I'm at in life, a little will do :)

This is actually something that I've been thinking about a lot lately because I used to view makeup as a chore and just an extra thing to do in the morning, so I usually just wouldn't wear it. However, over the past few months I started watching KZbin videos of gurus doing their makeup just because I like watching other people do their makeup. Then I started getting inspired and I was like "wow I want to try that" and it's turned into a way for me to just relax and have "me time" in the morning. Like one of my favorite things is picking out what makeup I'm going to wear and matching it to my outfit. I have no problem going bare faced, but I just love the process of doing it now that I found out how relaxing it is for me. I usually don't do a full face, but sometimes it's fun to just pick out a lipstick color or try to do a new eyeshadow look. Basically, I agree with you and I've also been thinking about makeup a lot lately. You should watch some French makeup gurus like Violette_fr because she does really really minimal makeup and focuses more on skincare. Her makeup is super simplistic and artistic at the same time and it's definitely all about enhancing what you love instead of hiding what you don't like.

Great topic, great vid! I totally relate to this... I wear pretty much no makeup on a daily basis, but I’ve found that when filming, accentuating the features just looks better on camera. Plain and simple. I know a lot of people are saying “you don’t need makeup!” and nobody does... but in this case it’s like dressing up before going on stage, ya know? I used to wear a lot of makeup in highschool and throughout my first two years in college because I was very insecure and refused to leave the house without having a full face on. As I got older my skin has gotten better which meant I didn't have to wear as much Foundation. Now I only wear a tinted moisturizer with SPF, concealer and highlighter on my face. I used to experiment with different colors every day and go to work with purple eyeshadow and green eyeshadow but now I just put a neutral Brown in my crease and some mascara and call it a day. I only wear it just to look more fresh and alive otherwise I just looked very very tired and sick. I think what also helped me a lot with that I found a significant other who loves the way I look without makeup so I worry less about my appearance.

I reached a point last year where I realized that I couldn't leave the house without wearing makeup. So I decided to go a month without wearing makeup and it was really hard! Like when you're going out to a fancy dinner without any makeup on, you kinda feel like a slob. Which relates to the societal expectations. However the 1 month really did help and now I don't give a shit about whether or not I'm wearing it and it actually feels really good to have reached this point. Now I can focus on wearing makeup when I feel like expressing myself, instead of just feeling insecure.

In college, I wore a lot of makeup. 2 years post-college, I hardly ever wear makeup. Because I work from home, I see no reason to put on makeup. When I do wear makeup, it's for special occasion and it's usually only mascara and lipstick. It took me awhile to be comfortable with my complexion post-foundation use. But I love not wearing makeup and being able to truly look at myself in the mirror and say "wow, my skin is glowing and I look so beautiful and healthy!" The vegan lifestyle really helps, too. Loving 'Chats with Caitlin'! Keep up the awesome work.

I love this! I am 22 and this past summer I have finally been able to accept my face without makeup. In middle school I had terrible cystic acne and I got bullied for it so I used makeup as a mask. I have not had acne like that for about 8 years now and I am learning to love my face and my skin and I have learned to focus on skin care instead of worrying about covering up my face. I do however fill in my brows everyday because a lady over waxed one of them once and it never grew back the same lol! It saves me so much time and stress not wearing it every day and my skin is so healthy.

Last December I stopped wearing makeup after my mom died. By the way, my mom never wore makeup or nail polish. Today was the last day of Sephora's 20% off sale so I stocked up on new makeup. I'm not sure how often I will wear it in the future because like you, I enjoy the extra time to sleep in. Some days I feel like I look pretty worn out and I think about putting on makeup. Next thing I know I'm telling myself you are naturally beautiful and good enough, before heading out the door. 🤷🏾♀️ Not wearing makeup is very liberating. Thanks for the chat.

Aside from the makeup I wore to my dance recitals, I didn't start wearing makeup until college but only for my job or special occasions. My mom had told me makeup would help me look presentable at my job. When I started dating my mate I wore makeup because you want to look nice for your man I was told. After moving out I really only wore makeup for our dates and for work. As of the last year, I now wear makeup more often, but mainly because I feel confident wearing some makeup that highlights my eyes and an outfit I really like because I'm more comfortable in my body. The one thing that hasn't changed is that the only makeup I wear is an eyebrow pencil, eyeliner, mascara, a little eyeshadow, and concelor for under my eyes.

I use to only wear mascara and eyeliner. Then I began to hate it. Much like you, I realized I was wearing it for all the wrong reasons. As far back as I can remember, people have teased me about my eye shape and size. So makeup was a way for me to change the way my eyes looked. Now that I'm older, I wear A LOT of makeup but because I want to. I also suck at art haha but I can do some neat things with an eyeshadow brush. I learned to accept the things I can't change and to appreciate makeup as art. I am proud to say all my makeup is cruelty free. Like you said, just do your own thing. What matters is confidence and self expression ❤

I have conflicting views on makeup as well. Life is SO much easier not wearing makeup, but at the same time depending where I am, what I'm doing or how my skin is I will feel self conscious without it. I work with people and wear makeup to work everyday, but I feel if one day I don't wear any makeup it will be such a drastic change and everyone will be staring at me (in reality I also don't wear much makeup). It also depends on my environment. If I'm with other women who aren't wearing any or minimal makeup then I'm comfortable without it, but if they are all done up and I'm not I feel so uncomfortable. I definitely feel judged by other women because men don't really notice makeup (except when your wearing too much). Thanks for discussing this topic, it was interesting to hear what you have to say!

I agree on so many of your points. I get frustrated that it is required of me but not my husband. I think we do it to ourselves though. I think it's because women are constantly coming up with new ways to accentuate their features so those people who don't do those things start to fall "behind." I can tell when you have makeup on, but you don't appear to have it caked on. I will say, the fact that you don't wear much has been inspiring me to do the same, so if you feel like you have to wear it to look professional, I totally understand that, but also want you to know that you inspire people to be confident in their skin, not under a mask. Obviously, it's your life and your body, so do whatever makes you happiest! I love your channel and how down to earth you are. 💜

I started wearing makeup in highs school, although I wasn’t very good at it. I improved my “skills” later on. I never wore makeup to feel better about myself or to impress others I just thought it was fun and pretty! After a while though I got to the point where I wouldn’t leave my house without it. Thankfully now I feel comfortable in my own skin and don’t mind being bare faced but also have fun playing with makeup when I have the time or energy to do it. I think society puts to much pressure on girls when I’m comes to makeup. If someone doesn’t wear any people judge them for being basic but if they wear a lot then people judge you for wearing too much makeup. I think we should be able to wear as much or as little makeup without the pressure of what people might think. Do what makes you happy.

I totally understand you! I remember when I was younger I would always wear BB cream to “hide” my acne and eyeliner. I was so concerned about it, every time I would not wear BB cream I felt like everybody was judging me and looking at my skin and I started to feel really insecure about myself. It was always taking so much time to do my makeup and sometimes it made me angry because my eyeliner was not “perfect”. But one day, I looked at myself in the mirror with my makeup on and I asked myself “Why should I do this when I don’t even want to?” and the feeling of having something on my skin drove me crazy so I rushed in the bathroom and took all of my makeup off and I looked in the mirror a second time and I felt way better without my makeup. But despite of that experience I really think that makeup is such an art and I am really impressed by all of these people who can do such amazing makeup! I like makeup myself but not too much.😊 I would really like to hear about your experience abroad! 👍🏻

I've been wearing makeup since early high school, and similar to you, most of that time I used it as a "mask". I had a lot of self-esteem issues and I didn't feel secure enough unless I at least had some eyeliner on. I wouldn't say I wore a ton of makeup, I rarely used full face concealer or any of that, but I did use a lot of eye makeup. A couple of years ago was when I was wearing the most makeup: undereye concealer, eyeliner, sometimes mascara, and eyeshadow. But as I worked on my self-esteem, the less makeup I would wear. It got to the point where I would just wear mascara (mostly because I read somewhere that if you're going to wear one thing, it should be mascara). Then this hot as balls summer came around, and I didn't feel like putting anything on my face beside sunscreen. And I realized that I liked how I look without makeup and didn't feel like I NEEDED to wear it. Now I only wear dark lipstick, and that is tied in with my love of color. I'm currently sporting blue and purple hair. The dark lipstick and bright hair combo make me feel like a Bad Ass Bitch, but I don't feel imcomplete if I'm not wearing any. I'll wear mascara occasionally but I've found myself going without it due to forgetting or just being lazy. I also totally understand your appreciation for watching other people apply makeup. I remember being with my mom while she got ready in the morning and I was mesmerized by her makeup routine. To this day I'll watch youtube videos with zero intentions of attempting it.

I used to wear makeup (and a lot of it!) in high school and looking back, it looked so bad! As time went on, I got less enthusiastic about doing it but I always wear mascara and fill in my eyebrows. I love doing my full face of makeup when I can but my job just doesn’t really allow it. I get sweaty and it’s a gas station, just not a situation I want to wear a lot of makeup in. I also have very weird skin so I hate wearing foundation because it either looks cakey or it slides right off my face. I struggle a lot with whether or not I want to wear it, but I love that you shared your views on itn

This is a great video caitlin! You’re beautiful and your “natural” makeup loo is beautiful! I can totally tell when you are wearing makeup mostly because your skin tone is more even, but it looks natural and is the embodiment of a good “no makeup makeup look”. I also love a good strong brow and a nice, dewy highlight. Not to be rude but some of the comments that talk about how she “doesn’t need makeup because she’s pretty” is counterproductive to the conversation since it is still putting the emphasis on her appearance. She doesn’t need makeup regardless of whether or not she's pretty, and no one needs makeup regardless of their appearance. People wear makeup to feel more confident or to express their artistry. I love makeup almost as much as I love cooking, and I wear makeup pretty much every day because it's a de-stressing activity for me in the mornings, as weird as that sounds. I love doing different more graphic and unconventional eye and lip looks and wear them out in public because i feel like a piece of performance art.

Thanks for this video Caitlin :-) I am a senior in high school this year and I do not like wearing makeup. I think it's a beautiful thing to do if you enjoy it but again I don't think you should be doing it because you think you look bad. I just like my face the way it is and I just don't like the way makeup feels on my face. But I definitely have noticed as a senior there is more pressure to wear makeup. And sometimes I do feel some peer pressure just to put on some mascara or something.

Really enjoyed the video! Could you make a video about your wardrobe and what you consider basic essentials? Maybe a minimalist type video and what vegan friendly brands you enjoy? OR your athletic wear collection!! I have no idea where to buy them, what brands are more budget friendly, quality and all that. Would love to see that :)

this is such an important topic, because there IS major pressure on girls to look "presentable"... I do makeup for fun/as a hobby, but I would like to stop wearing it on a daily basis. Every time I try, though, I feel like I need to wear it because I either think my acne is ugly, my eyelashes aren't long and curled enough, or I am embarrassed of my natural eyebrows...It really is a struggle! I will keep trying though because I don't like the idea of putting shit on my face every day. lol. thanks for sharing!

I agree. Make-up should be for fun not because other people expect for you to look a certain way. I don't wear make-up at all. I am 20 and had on twice for a ball and for prom, because I think it's fun to treat yourself for special occasions. On a daily basis I don't even wear mascara. I think it is important to do what feels right for you. If you like make-up and enjoy playing around with it, go for it if not, don't. Live and let live :)

I did notice your face was looking extra vibrant! Thought it may be more sun or something though. Can’t even tell you’re wearing makeup, face lookin beautiful either way 😃 I really like your honesty on the subject. Personally, I’m always a little conflicted as well. Stopped wearing anything except mascara 2 years ago, stopped wearing mascara early this year, then went back to wearing just that again and experimenting with a little more makeup on the weekends. I say whatever feels best is always right! A full face of makeup just feels like too much work in my opinion & causes my skin to breakout more frequently. I would love if you did another video mentioning your favorite podcasts again! Started listening to “Nutrition Matters” from your recommendation and loved it 🤗 Apologies for the ramble haha

I'm stuck in a weird place with makeup. I enjoy it, I love watching videos, and I love getting more information that will help me feel more confident in my skill. I also spend more money than other people probably do, and I spend more time applying my makeup than anyone else I know. The amount of money I spend is not more than I can afford or am willing to pay, and the time I spend in the morning before work is special to me; I prefer to have slow mornings that allow me to do what I want at my own pace, so I get up quite early and watch a movie while I slowly apply a bad ass look. My issue, though, is that I feel I don't get enough time with my natural face. I spend my weekends without makeup, happily lounging with my partner, but I could never go to work without my face done. I don't know what that actually says about my self-esteem and relationship with makeup, but there is a point every morning where I wonder if I'm a fraud. I wonder if I'm lying to myself about how much I enjoy makeup in order to justify my need to spend exorbitant amounts of time applying it.

You have such amazing skin!! You really don’t need foundation at all. Personally, I love makeup. I never wore it in high school. I started wearing makeup around 19. All I wore was mascara and powder. No one could even tell I was wearing anything lol in the past year (I’m 27 now) I really got into Makeup a lot more. I still don’t like to wear liquid foundation because it feels heavy on my face. But I love to play around with different eyeshadow looks. I wear makeup because it’s fun and I can try different looks out. For me, it’s more because I like to, not because I need to.

I have a lot of the same views on makeup as you. My mom and grandma never wore it, so I was never exposed to it growing up, and now I think I look really strange with a lot of makeup on and I can't stand how it feels on my face.

Lovely video! In the least video i watched of yours i did actively notice that you were wearing makeup (it didn't look like you were wearing loads though!). Like most people, wearing makeup and not wearing makeup looks lovely on you, just in slightly different ways.I think the 'why' you're wearing makeup is definitely a good point! I have a lot of acne scarring and still break out, so could quite easily have fallen into using it as a mask. On the days i do wear makeup i enjoy doing it and how it looks! There's been a lot of days recently though where i simply haven't bothered to wear it to work because i just haven't felt like it, and i always appreciate getting ready for bed and not having to take it off! I do think there is something to be said for the 'put together' feeling of wearing it, when i do choose to wear it (probably a few times a week) I enjoy how it looks as well as well as feeling 'ready', but then again i can another day walk int the same situation makeup free and feel perfectly comfortable. I think sometimes it's hard for me to figure out if i'm wearing makeup because i feel i should in a certain situation, or because i really want to, I generally like to think it's the latter though (although I suppose it's a combination of the two!).

I never wear makeup anymore because it seems like no matter how “natural” the ingredients are I break out! My skin was so bad in the days when I wore so much, and now that i don’t wear anything it’s so clear and smooth!

I wear makeup because I usually have extra time in the morning so I do . Also it’s very relaxing and fun. Lastly it leaves me feeling more confident so I like it.

I could tell you were wearing it in the last video but not this one until you mentioned it, looks great! I love doing my makeup because it's fun when I do but I only ever do it on special occasions or sporadically.

Personally makeup is a hobby and art form for me, applying makeup is actually a form of relaxation for me but I can go anywhere without it & I sometimes do without it for months when I am busy. I rather get more sleep than get up early to do makeup lol I am confident both with and without it. Everyone has to do what they are comfortable with.

Would LOVE for you to make a video about your study abroad experience! I'm curious to know if it impacted your vegan journey, too! I studied abroad in Kenya and Mozambique and both experiences impacted my life in a variety of ways and added so much value to my life experiences. PS Thanks for all that you do! xo

I agree with you. Overall, I like wearing makeup (mostly fill in eyebrows, hide dark circles and put on some lipstick), but I don't like to wear it every day. Right now, I work at home too so I don't really feel the need to put on any makeup, so I basically just wear makeup when I'm going out to eat or to a bar or something. Even when I worked at an office I never woke up ealier then needed just to put on lots of make up... Also, it would be very cool to hear you talk about your experience abroad!

My mum has worn make up everyday for as long as I can remember, so I picked up on that around the middle of high school (late year 8/year 9) and that kept going until the end of first year of uni. In February this year, I moved and ended up getting rid of my make up, so except for lip balm, I don't own or wear any. Before actually putting it in the bin, I spent a lot of time thinking about what you discussed. In my head, I was comparing it to shaving and how women started because men went off to war; I realised that, while both of these things are, in terms of society, forced on to women, I still chose to shave because leg hair rubbing against my skin or getting caught in clothes is really uncomfortable/painful, but, personally, I wasn't getting any benefit or enjoyment from makeup, and it was damaging my skin, even though I used natural products. I'm very much "you do you" with people who do wear makeup, but I think I'm against the product and idea of it. When makeup was first invented, anyone of any gender could wear it, and it was very much about the beauty of it, which is what you find with those who treat it as an art form today (notice how, for those who see it that way, all genders wear it). But outside of that, makeup is very much driven by men and commercialism. If I can find it, I'll link it, but I remember seeing a tumblr post from someone who used to work at Sephora and was trained to practically target women and trick them into believing that they needed a heap of products for an "everyday look". That person then said that when embracing natural beauty and skin care became a thing, they did the same but with the same amount of products that were marketed as "light/natural" and all that stuff. Then, in terms of men, it's the typical "oh you'd look better with less makeup"/"you look dead" dichotomy and people not getting hired or not being respected because they don't wear it. Sorry that was really long, but basically I feel a lot better now that I'm not involved in it because of my own beliefs and such.

I agree. I wear makeup for dates/parties/events, special outings (mostly weekends). But during the week just to go to work/gym/errands I don't really care much.

I have a lot of makeup that I like to wear for fun on weekends or special occasions (I don't have precious sleep time to waste during work days, haha!). It's a lot of fun to wear bold looks that no one at my job would ever see me in. On the daily, I just draw on my eyebrows because I'm missing a lot of hairs and like to have a full pair of brows. I used to wear foundation if I did a makeup look, but have completely stopped because I realized I hate how my skin looks with it on. Almost any foundation I've ever tried just makes my skin look crappy, so I'd rather just do a fun eye look and lipstick and skip face makeup (aside from maybe some blush, light highlighter). Foundation is uncomfortable, too. I can feel it on my skin whenever I wear it.

OMG I know exactly what you mean about eyebrows!!! I keep them shaped suuuuuuper well and then I have like 3 eyebrow kits/pencils to make sure I don't ever not have one! I feel like it's easier to not wear makeup if I never worry about my eyebrows looking good

I love mornings; what always gives me motivation to get out of bed is to get my bulky cup of black coffee, take it into the bathroom/ to my mirror and sip it in between doing the steps of my makeup. This is literally the first thing I do. I am passionate about makeup, I do really obsess over it, however lately I've been getting really bad acne on my forehead (I'm vegan, eat clean and work out a lot :( .. still ) and it kind of makes me feel like the purpose of it is just concealing them. I do feel quiet embarassed without wearing foundation. :( Wish they would go away so I could just have fun with my makeup again.
