I saw them live once almost 20 yrs ago. It was a small venue Waterstreet in Rochester NY. They did this as an encore and it was awesome. Then the lead singer called up a guy from the crowd and gave him a tree. Literally a 6ft tall potted tree. It was Fall in Western NY. I wonder whatever happened to that tree.

I don’t think they were playing it safe so much as doing what they do. The “Sabbath” version was heavy with guitar solo and that just isn’t something Cake does a lot of or at length. For what it’s worth it just may be Cake liked the song and wanted to cover it. If I’m remembering correctly, the album this came from was B-sides and unused tracks. This may have been just an idea they were playing with.

There’s a reaction channel called Trybals that recently did War Pigs by Black Sabbath. The channel introduces Pakistani tribal folks to things they’ve never been exposed to. Pop rocks, Jinjer, tomb of the unknown soldier, opera, whatever. The creator of the channel always researches the crap out of everything so his reactors can understand the context. On the video of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs, I learned that war pigs were once a literal thing. I think it was in the medieval period, they would set fire to pigs and release them on the enemy to cause chaos amongst their ranks in their tortured death throes and panic. It was so interesting and horrifying, I thought I’d share that here. I hope everybody’s weekend is going great!

This is how you make a good remake. You don't try to imitate the original because most of the time you won't surpass it. But you can't also change it too much or it won't be recognizable and that defeats the purpose of the remake which is usually, done as an homage of the original. The fine line is to keep the basics but to make the song yours by incorporating your own style. Jimi Hendrix did that superbly and listen for example to All along the watchtower. The original absolutely sounds Dylanesque while the remake doesn't sound anything else than a Jimi Hendrix song. His remake was so good that Dylan bought the rights to it to have it played Jimi's way. Another great example is You really got my by the Kinks and the fantastic remake by Van Halen. You can totally tell them apart, and yet, both are exciting in their own way. Which brings us to Cake. Cake has a unique style that immediately sets them apart. The funky vibe, the slow almost rap-like style of the lead singer. The prominent (and excellent) bass-line and an extensive use of brass instrument in their songs. Case in point, their remake of I will survive which I like even more than the already excellent original by Gloria Gaynor. Here also you can totally tell it's cake. It sounds nothing like Sabbath, not even close, but the spirit of the song is totally here. I wonder if Geezer or Tommy or Ozzy heard this version, if yes, I have no doubt they must have loved it because it is fantastic. Speaking of remakes, there's a very talented guy here on KZbin who is mixing songs from different styles into one seamless one and the results are frankly astonishing. Do listen to his mix of Rock Lobster by the B-52's and Raining Blood by Slayer. The result is called Raining Lobsters and honestly, it is absolutely great.

Sometimes when asking the original artist if you can cover their song (which you have to have permission) the artist may allow you to do it but with certain conditions, some may say yes have fun with it, others may say yes but you cant change it up to much and others may say NO, I would imagine Black Sabbath is very particular about how its music is covered...
