Considering how the Aztecs viewed the earth beneath their feet as a hungry monster, it makes perfect sense why they want to keep friendly terms. I don't know if that kind of view is unique among the Aztecs, but they feared the ocean less then they feared the land while other world cultures had the opposite. Of course there's also the world turtle of some native American myth to consider as well. To them the world is alive like Calamity says and that's why they have to take care of it because killing the world turtle would mean the end of the world by watery grave. Betty really takes the world-building of her story to serious levels using known mythology myths.

As Overly Sarcastic Productions put it: The earth is basically an eldritch crocodile monster that people must placate with bloody sacrifices so the world doesn't eat everything. Maybe the coolest and most metal view of the earth I've ever heard in mythology.

Considering the guns we've seen, Scourosi seems to have the technology level of the early 1900s/late 1800s. So it's odd to me that so little is apparently known about what lies over the sea considering what kind of ships they have. The early episode with Wrip and Vinkle's backstories even shows obviously foreign merchants on a ship, so maybe the main cast just live such homebound lives they have no idea what lies in the wider world.

Everyone in the main cast are kinda scattered throughout the land in Judgement, but gather at Mama Spider's to eventually move to the area the show takes place. Icky and Calamity got lost in the desert that Kitty knows her way through when heading towards Metztli. Even when you take Vinkle's "creative license" into consideration, he and Wrip are the most well travelled/foreigners; they know next to nothing about the black ick or Amaroq that is common knowledge to everyone else.

These stories really don't seem all that fitting for Calamity to tell. She always seems less about lore and more about the here-and-now. But then, I don't guess we've really seen the series when it's just her and one other person, and they're in a completely relaxed, non-stressful environment. The closest was she she stayed in Kitty's house with Wrip and Corn, I think? She just started… singing. No real reason. Well, aside from the fact that Betsy wanted to sing, I suppose. (;
