Thanks for the info! I've been feeding the shells back to them-and they love them-but I throw a large batch in the food processor so they are very small pieces prior to giving them to the chickens.

I followed a recipe I found on yt to make cornbread with ground eggshells. It's kind of awful to humans, but the hens seem to like it okay. Not sure how much it helped because the older (3 years) hens still lay rather soft shelled eggs, very fragile, whereas the younger (1.5 year) hen lays good firm shells that take some effort to crack. Seems more to be age related than diet. But we do try to get them plenty of calcium and other nutrients.

@@ChickensAndGardening I also put out some oyster shell after finding a couple of soft shells. I'm not sure which one works best or if both methods help produce hard shells, but I haven't had any soft shells since (knock on wood, lol.)

Thumbs up and a sub for the Ron Paul shirt....and chickens. I free range but they won't eat oyster shell, they won't eat layer pellets, and they clearly have some calcium deficit problems now and then. Gonna look into giving them Kale and see how they like it.

Thanks brother! A ton of green leafy vegetables should help with that calcium. Also, the soldier fly larvae have a decent amount of calcium in them.

If you eat fish that has bones in it throw it to the chickens. They love it and will eat it all up. Also, if you go fishing and catch garbage fish such as pike minnow or squaw fish bring it home throw it on the bbq or bake it in the oven wihole, including guts for like 20 minutes, let it cool down and throw it to them. They will eat everything guts and all except for the head bones and thick spinal cord. Man do they love it. It usually takes a day for it to start in on the production. Between the protein and the calcium you’ll notice a difference for a week or so.

I got 2 new layers 1 is doing fantastic the other is laying soft eggs I have the oyster shells and the layer pellets I guess I'm going to try kale and some more leafy greens hopefully that helps her thank you for the information

I'm actually giving the same feed and I started giving the same oyster shell about a week ago and I noticed that their feed consumption went way down. Do I need to delay giving the oyster shell? My hens are about 18/19 weeks old and one or rwo have started laying eggs.

You shouldn't need to give them oyster that early. Monitor how they lay and how the shells are first. With some chickens, the feed is enough for calcium.

Gwen Johnston-Petrarch 0 seconds ago I was wondering if anyone had an answer to this question - what should I do and why are a couple of my pullets eating some of the eggs that are laid before I can collect them? I just started noticing this behavior. Firstly, they are fed a high-protein diet that I mix myself - did a lot of research so I'm confident of the mix. Second, it isn't a predator as the coop is pred-proofed in the extreme. Could it be that I need to add more calcium to my feed? I notice when I feed them in the morning they seem to go for any eggshells first (we also add a lot of chicken scraps to their feed - which is calculated at 1/3lbs per chicken per day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Gwen

We have 3 red stars and a black star. The black star was a great layer, 1.5 years old and laying every day, but went broody for about 3 weeks. Now has come out of it but still not laying. I wonder if there's a "trigger" to get her laying again, like extra calcium? Our 3 red stars have also slowed down; 3 years old. One of them appears to have totally stopped; still sits, but doesn't produce. And is a bit slower and less aggressive than her two sisters. We already lost a red star that just slowed down and weakened until she died, and we don't know why. We gave her an epsom salt bath but that didn't make much difference. I give them the soldier ant larvae which they love, and have given them oyster shells in the past. Also I get big bags of greens from the supermarket, like chopped kale and spinach, and toss it in pretty regularly. When I mow the lawn, I toss big piles of fresh green clippings in, which they love, will climb on and dig for bugs. Not sure what more we can do. Chickens seem to have variable health depending on the breed and conditions. It also doesn't help that we've lost 3 hens to predators, due to our ignorance. Now they're protected from hawks, and we've better secured the coops against night predators. A raccoon figured out how to open the lid which we thought was impenetrable. Now it's secured with bun gees. We have the electric fences and energizers ready to install so hopefully that will cut down on ground predators. It's a constant battle.

They are a constant battle for sure. There is no one trigger for any of them. However, increased protein and calcium will certainly help.

Hello. I need some help with my quail who is really not feeling well. Yesterday, she had been limping and would rarely walk, she rarely even eats, and she was very fluffed up with her feathers. Today, she seems slightly better, but still limping, lethargic, and just looking off. She as always been by herself, which she is happy with, and her environment is very healthy, she rarely even goes outside. She has had reproductive issues in the past (vent prolapse). I'm thinking it is Osteoporosis, do you have any idea what is happening or can share any advice?

You mentioned that birds can't push out soft shell eggs so that results in being egg bound. Here is one for you there was 1 or 2 of my hens that had layed 2 eggs that had a water balloon type of egg it was very weird. My girls started to lay eggs at 12 weeks old and I told them to stop it but of course they didn't listen to me 😂

Hello, I had a question about my chickens I live where the summer is so hot now is 40°C and it is about 4 mornings I hear my chickens sneez hard in the mornings and sometimes in the afternoon Should I be worried? And what is the treatment? Can you please answer me in a short way as your experience on chickens? I really don't wanna take them to a vet here

It could be as simple as dust. If it is 40C then it is probably dry too (and dusty). Are there any other symptoms?

That’s an old wives tale. They won’t be more prone to eating their eggs if you give them their shells. From my own experience, my hens actually want the yolk…. They don’t even eat the shell if an egg gets broken…
