I love fish pate and I make this regularly. I also do it with vacuum packed smoked mackerel. One pack of mackerel, one pack of cream cheese, lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper and a dash of ht sauce. The peppered mackerel is my favourite. I also make a one with tinned salmon, but use melted butter and crème fraiche instead of cream cheese. Yummy. I’m off to see if i have sardines in the cupboard. I'm soooo surprised and delighted to see this recipe! Our family has been making this for at least 70+ years. We didn't use the sardines in tomato sauce, though. We enjoy it on bagels and bialies. 😋😋😋 One addiction that's wonderful is topping it with fresh diced tomatoes. YUM!!!

Canned sardines are sold in different flavours here in British Columbia, Canada. One is jalapeno and another is lemon and black pepper. Also available in one pound larger tins usually in tomato sauce, I can envision making 2 or 3 batches from a large tin before having to sanitize the blender. I also fancy placing a few capers on top of this pate once spread on my bread or toast slice.

There was a children’s author who wrote a series of books where the eponymous hero was a little boy who enjoyed sardine and some weird-thing sandwiches (I wish I can remember what it was). When the author was interviewed he was asked why that specific sandwich? The author replied that he himself enjoyed sardine sandwiches and little boys always like eating weird combination of things. I wish I could remember (A) the books (B) the author and (C) the sandwiches. This recipe just brought it to mind for some strange reason….? (😂)
