I'm with you, Paul. The lovely flavorful oil is too good to toss. I buy the King Oscar or Season sardines in olive oil. I make a nice plate of salad with olives and chunks of Provolone, pour out the oil from the can onto the salad, then add more olive oil as needed, splash some cider vinegar, add salt & Italian seasoning, throw on some grated Parmesan, top with the sardines. Dinner fit for a monarch!

Mine dad as well. We would buy sardines from the war surplus store in military green cans. We needed to pull the key off the lid and open them by rolling the lid off with the key. Sandwiches, soda crackers, cheese, or straight out of the can. Didn't matter. Still eat them to this day. But I must say, they don't seem to taste the the same as in those days. But I'm 71 years old, so most things don't taste the same or as well as they did when I had an appetite.

Tried the garlic and herb sardines using the WRITTEN recipe linked above. Turned out well (thanks) but it is different from the recipe on the video. The recipe on the video first instructs to broils the sardine with the butter garlic mixture -- WITHOUT the panko -- for several minutes -- and then, in step two , instructs to add the panko to the butter garlic mixture and pour it over the sardines, and return the dish to the boiler for another 2 minutes. In other words, in this version, the panko is only broiled for 2 minutes and so it does not burn. The written recipe, however, states that you should add the butter garlic mixture INCLUDING the panko to the sardines and then broil for 5 minutes. I followed the written recipe but smelled the panko burning after about 3 minutes -- and pulled the dish from the broiler in the nick of time. In short, this is an excellent recipe, but folks should follow the recipe on the video so that they do not burn the panko. Panko will begin burning after about 2 minutes under the broiler. Thanks.

So do I but I came here because I'm tired of that. I need these oily fish for my cholesterol and triglycerides so I have to eat them often. I need a recipe! The first one is similar to the way my grandmother in Italy would make linguine with tuna sauce! I will make that but I should stay away from 'white' pasta. I don't have whole wheat or whole grain pasta, but I do have farro - a grain similar to barley.

I’ve loved sardines ever since I can remember. My go-to recipe is just olive oil, a little anchovy, garlic, sardines, pasta, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, Italian parsley, and a little lemon zest. Voila!!! It taste great!!! With fish being expensive as it is, I would prefer to eat sardines than the supposed “fresh fish” in the deli department at the local grocery stores.

Growing up with an italian grandmother I got used to eating a lot of simple foods. My favorite was pizza. She would make a good homemade bread dough and put it into a baking pan. Then would come pasta sauce, anchovies, sardines, parmesan cheese. Bake till done. Then my favorite part, put it into the refrigerator until cold. Salty and delicious right out of the fridge. It's likely an acquired taste but to me it was far better than the hot store bought pizzas.

Sardine pizza. I saw your recipes and just wanted to add my offering. The 12 minute oven cooked pizza recipe burns away any sardine ‘fishy smell’ that sometimes you get from some tinned sardines. Use courgettes, tomato sauce of course and cheese of course and basil and sprinkle olive oil and olives. You won’t look back ever. Hope this is useful to sardine lovers and soon to be converts.

Canned fish/meat foods, to serve cold as side dish with summer salads and cold sliced meats and few grilled/boiled veggies.. its the way i know .. if cooking an hot meal than i can only use fresh/froozen fish .. just !ention the awkwardness of cuisine variation depending on your location, culture, clima, etc.. Not an "egg rice dishes style" fan.. mediterranean based foodie here, love brit fast such f&c or full-breakfast.. so excuse but my feeling about non-continental recipes goes for stews andsome pies or sunday roast! But im always ready to taste curious variations, being Molecular Cuisine my limit.. like foams and gels but not fancy psychedelic expensive cooking people/fashion! But this sil an Interesting recipe!

I love sardines. When I was a kid I couldn't stand them. My Dad used to eat them and then when I got older I tasted some again and really liked them. I never knew there were different recipes for them. I usually eat them out of the can with some saltine crackers, lol. thanks for the recipe.

It probably has benefits in eating the skin and bones, but I read there is 50% less mercury when they're skinless boneless.

Thanks for the recipes and will make but I laughed cause I spent a few months in southern France and was picturing a French man I became friends with, late 60’s, physique of a 20 year old, bikes/runs everyday, when I asked about his diet, he talked about sardines, “when I’m hungry I just go to the market and buy some sardines. I put a little bit of limón and eat right away. Et viola (and that’s it).”

Yes, they can be pricey. I think they give good value for the cost, though. The cheapest I've found are Beach Cliff. That was the last US sardine packer. Sold to a Canadian company the continues the brand. They are not fancy fish, but taste good.

you cant take the salt out but if you add potato, the high potassium content will mitigate the salty taste, as sodium (na) and potasium (K) have a symbiotic relationship

Good! I had been a Right Out of the Can type of guy, with Soy Sauce, Gulden's dry Mustard & maybe some Cayenne. I hope the Sardine trick works with my Baked Ziti cause the Anchovies are too overpowering for Leftovers. What is the Go To Sardine Sandwich? Rachel Ray always talks about eating those with Her Grand Dad. One Trick I've learned is to buy Sardines in Spring Water, but to Drain them and add my own favorite brand of Olive Oil and let them marinate in the Fridge for a few days. That is Spectacular. So are you Megan. Really enjoyed this Vid.
