All very interesting of course. I suggest the greatest challenge shooters have, when holding the gun above the trap house, at whatever level, is that they struggle to keep the gun still until the target passes/leaves the gun. If you look at the shotcam clips, you can see that the target leaves the gun and then Russell goes after it and shoots it. Too many start to move too soon.

Yes Iain the biggest downfall of holding the gun too high is moving the barrel before the target appears. I believe that is why many two eyed shooters end up back on the trap house. They are catering for a flaw in their technique. If you constantly move the gun before the target appears you are better off holding low than high.

Great video. The length of gun movement is something I wondered about.

thanks Russell, that has set me straight, as a one eyed shooter (medical) i was first told to have the gun up over the trap house, this limited my gun movement to swing thru the target.. by keeping the gun down on the trap house i get to see the target more cleanly and get to swing thru the target for a better chance at a kill

Hi Phill. I would never advise that a one eyed shooter (that is a shooter that closes his eye OR has tape over their shooting glasses) start with their gun above the trap. You will get a blind spot from your leading hand on the forend. It is not the end of the world. Many great champions have started their gun on the roof of the trap in both DTL and Olympic Trap. If you are lucky enough to be able to shoot with two eyes though, I would advise holding above the roof for the reasons explained in this video.

Interesting how much you wait before you move the gun. I am guessing the target travels about halfway to the break point before the gun is moved. Great video.

Excellent video Russell, I recently changed my hold point higher after a couple years of learning to shoot with both eyes open, and it has helped me. Question: What is your opinion of not only a higher hold point, but also holding to the right of the house on Station 5 and to the left of the house on Station 1 ? It has helped me on hard quartering birds on 5 and I am considering trying it to the left on Station 1. I am a right handed shooter.

Have a look at our video on hold points for trap. I am not a big fan on holding too wide of the trap house on stations 1 and 5 as it can make the straight target a problem and it slows down your barrel speed (reduces lead) if you get an angled target

Hate to ask you another question. Hopefully one day you will come to Montana. The length of gun movement is the same on straightaways and hard-angle shots, but what about the speed of the swing? Because of angular velocity, do we swing faster on the hard-angle shots.
@GoShooting
@GoShooting 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely you swing faster. In the “swing through” method of lead (that all trap shooters use) it is the speed of your barrel that gives you lead. Faster angled targets require faster barrel speeds

Thanks for awesome video, one question the higher gun position does it hold good for Olympic trap and skeet as well
@GoShooting
@GoShooting 3 жыл бұрын
Certainly for Olympic Trap you must start the shotgun lower to the trap house roof than for American trap
