I'm totally sure you've heard tons about her background by now. In my opinion, she's an old soul with amazing aptitude and connection with music .. since she was one and a half it became her focus! What? Yup. And she has literally worked for years on her voice .. and loved jazz from the start (past of that is from her grandmother) but her mother tells of how she would endlessly listen over and over to Billie Holliday and Etta .. etc.. she sang and sang and sang all day. This girl has put in the work .. out of pure wonder and passion for music. I am super grateful she's around .. she has certainly been a balm to listen to throughout this Pandemic. I cannot go a day without listening to her at least once. Thanks for your reaction. P.S. I highly recommend "Bang, Bang" .. part of her Norway's Got Talent time so she's only 7 .. teeth fixed since her very first audition (this one) but she is a subtle wonder in that performance and I believe you'd appreciate it.

Her grandmother liked jazz. She could hold a mic and sing at 18 months. She has always been self directed. When she is told “The scene is yours.” she is immediately serious and ready to sing. She signals for the backing track right away. She is the smallest contestant but she feels equal and joins in with others who are taller and older. She is not the least bit intimated.

Angelina Jordan is a music prodigy she started singing at age of 1.5 years and more than that she started with Billy Holiday Jazz. Angelina speaks 3 languages, designs her own clothes and runs an art studio, and has written a best-selling book. Angelina won Norway's got talent when she was 7 years old Her younger years before age 13 she was watched over by her mother and her Uncle who just wanted her to grow up normal. Her mother and uncle Turned down almost 90% of all requests for her to perform but from age 7years to 12 years old or so, even so, she has been all over the world (Mother never more than a breath away) she has produced over 130 covers, and she makes all of them her own, all of which will astound you. New people to Angelina get sucked down this road of experience not believing what they're hearing her excellent vocals and unique way of singing. Angelina's mother is Norwegian, her father is from Sweeden The grandmother on her mother's side is from Iran and her grandfather (recently deceased) from Japan both grandparents are very involved with Angelina, Angelina's song a million miles is about losing her grandfather.

Angelina says she is never nervous on stage. She goes into "a spesial place" when singing. Her grandmother let her listen to a lot of jazz classics when she was very young. She found music and styles on you tube from 2-3 years old. Her family are protective and priority childhood and school. I have followed her from this gloomy sunday audition, and she has never disappointed me. She is great, and will be greater as time goes by.

Not a musical household. I saw an interview with her mother, who said A surprised her when she was FIVE wanting to go on Norway's Got Talent. Her mother knew she was really taken by music because she spent all her time listening and playing around with singing and she knew she was passionate about it .. so she called NGT .. but they said they had an age limit and she'd have to wait till she was seven. The next two years she worked and worked on the 4 songs she did. Then this. I have no clue how i saw her or on what but it was right after she won this contest that i first saw Angelina and heard her sing. She was on a ton of talk shows all over Europe and became a sensation immediately. The bare feet and her white dresses with garlands in her hair fascinated me so i never forgot her and her voice and her comfortable confidence and lack of self importance. I think the last judge was worth listening to also .. if only for the reaction of shock at this level of musicality. But he also respected her answer to his question "Do you know what this song is about? " she calmly replies .. "yes, it was about a sad Sunday. " that's all she said .. and he respected that as a full answer, which made me respect him. I enjoy your reactions. Thanks.

From what I’ve read, AJ from the age of 1 1/2, began searching out Jazz tunes, and singers on KZbin, and would intently listen for hours. This from her mother’s interview. She would then pick the sounds she liked, and at the age of 5 began asking mom to enter her into singing competitions. Totally focused so young on music, truly astounding.

I don't think Caleb meant mimic in the direct sense. It takes nothing away from any young singer to note they start by directly following the styles of individual great singers, and then develop their own style. So there is a lot of Billie Holiday in this performance. but yes, the abilities and especially expressing feelings is all Angelina.

When Angelina is that young, her talents are so very unique and special. You can see it with other young performers like Courtney Hadwin, Grace VanderWaal and Amira Willghagen. They are special and unique. However, as they grow up other talented performers will join them and cause them to blend in with the crowd. They go from being special and adored to just another talented performer. This is difficult for some of them psychologically. If you watch one of the documentaries on Amira, she is already wondering if she will keep singing or become a social worker. It is sad to see them give up their childhoods only to be relegated. I like your sensitive and honest comments. Angelina's NGT performances bring me to tears every time (I'm 69).

As others have noted Angelina’s maternal grandmother (an Iranian artist of note) helped Angelina’s clear interest in jazz. Angelina’s mother (half Japanese, half Iranian, father is Swedish) noticed her singing in her crib at 18 months (there is video of this) and at about 2 Angelina started searching KZbin for music she liked. Her grandmother (Mery Zamani) started taking Angelina to a local record shop (real vinyl records) owned by a friend and fellow jazz aficionado. Angelina was there more formally introduced to the great jazz classics. There are a couple of videos of Angelina in the shop working out songs on the store piano and delving into bins of jazz recordings. By age 6 Angelina was in a recording studio (video of this also on KZbin). At age 7 she convinced her mother to allow her to try out for NGT. Her first audition was not Gloomy Sunday before an audience. It was actually another Billie Holiday song “I’m a Fool to Want You” done one a cappella for the judges with no audience besides the other performers. I actually like this performance better. That’s not right . It affected me more than Gloomy Sunday on a level I cannot explain. Anyway, she won NGT and the next 5 years are filled with hundreds of studio, live and home recordings of over 50 great artists along with 3 superb original songs. From the very beginning Angelina has selected and arranged all the songs she sings. She is very sure of herself and her choices in totally non egotistical way. I could write pages or talk for hours about her like the beautiful story that explains why she always performs barefoot even in the cold. I will leave that for you to discover. Angelina possesses a sweet, humble, compassionate and beautiful soul. She quite literally saved my life as I could not bear to leave a world or deny God’s gift of life when Angelina is my healing Angel.

Since everyone is having the same reaction to Angelina Jordan: disbelief...shocked... amazed, Ive decided to investigate to see if there is an ordinary explanation for her rapid and dramatic and extraordinary development. I'm not a psychologist, but information about "genius" characteristics can easily be found and seen with her. High IQ or genius (prodigy, gifted) characteristics include a more rapid mental development on all fronts: high facility to understand abstractions, innuendo and subtleties. Interestingly, obsession and total immersion in a subject is not unusual .A high demand for perfection in oneself and one's peers is also usual. I find real support for these ideas in her non-singing videos. ...In the nursery school setting, she didn't participate... and she vacated her seat before the end. Disgusted? ...In most of her younger at -play videos she has a bored look out the camera and doesn't smile... bet she wanted to be studying music instead ...she wanted to enter contests at 5ish but was too young to apply...already determined and obsessed with her music...I'll bet she viewed play was a waste of time. I'll bet (no proof), that she learned to read early! . That would certainly help with music as another way to learn...get info. I think as this type a child gets older, most learn to socialize; this is clearly happening with her. But, this is also a sign of intelligence. I don't think she came from another planet... She is just one of the special ones who is actually using her gift! A .

I'm so glad to hear this, I heard that she was singing around age 2. Her family is multicultural and I believe both parents are academics. Her grandmother is either Iranian or of Iranian descent. She sings without shoes because she met a homeless girl who had no shoes, so she gave her shoes to the homeless girl. And, she's said that she won't perform with shoes until all children have shoes. Prodigy is most likely the appropriate description but also to be so socially aware at a very young age, kind of supports the old soul in a tiny body. Thanks for the reaction.

Both are astonishing in different ways. She has too many good songs (covers, mostly) to count. It's pretty rare that she has a "bad" song (her "bad" is most people's "best"). Something else you might be interested in: she wrote a couple songs: What is Life (a slow jazzy song) and Shield (you'll know what style it is when you hear it :-D ) Have fun discovering Angelina's world.

Angelina is a child prodigy of youtube. Her mother, Sara Astar, said neither she nor her husband have any musical ability. She started listening to music on youtube for hours at a time. At about 1 1/2 she discovered Whitney Houston & there is a video of her singing "I will Always Love You" in her crib with a microphone almost as big as her. FYI, she recorded that song when she was 12 & it's beautiful. Her grandma, who is an artist, introduced Angelina to jazz at about 3 & that became her new genre of choice that remains today. She would practice singing a song during the week then perform it for the family on weekends. By the time she was 5, she asked her mom if she could audition for NGT, but she said she wasn't ready yet. So she practiced for 2 more years until her mom finally said she was ready. The rest is history. She attended a performing arts school in Oslo until 12. By that time the best voice coaches in Norway said they couldn't do more for her & they recommended they move to a music center in the US , so they moved to L.A. They go back & forth frequently. She turned 14 Jan 10, 2020 & is a freshman at a performing arts school in L.A.

I was astounded when I first stumbled on this. It is amazing. It is also clear that her rendition is directly inspired by the Billie Holiday recording, and has been learnt by ear. Your smile give me chills, Caleb. I think we all get those happy vibes from listening to Angelina. Nature or nurture, the everlasting question. Which of those made Angelina catch the essence of jazz at such a Young age? I think it's a bit of both. As mentioned by other's, she spent a lot of time with her grandmother as a child. Not knowing for sure, but deduced from the fact that Mery is a painter/artist and probably works from home, I'm guessing she was babysitting a lot when Angelina was young, and from what's being told to us by Angelina, she used to have jazz music playing all day. You mentioned that perceptiveness at young age isn't as well developed as later in life, but I'd like to argue the opposite. Although the small child isn't mentally aware of all the things that's going on in it's environment, they still listen and learn, and nerve cell connections in the brain are being formed at an alarming speed at this age. You asked if she had genetic predisposition to music, if her brain created that way due to genetics, or if she had learned it. It is of course difficult to prove it one way or the other, but the early influence of jazz music for sure helped her to further develop the sense for music she was given at birth. I've so far been talking about her development as a baby, and I can mention that she started to sing along to the songs she liked while still laying in her crib. Later, as she becomes more aware and start to interact with people in a social manner, she would have been inclined to get smitten by grandma's preference for jazz since she had a strong emotional bond formed with her. Even as adults we tend to appreciate things that is liked by those we love. The fact that they used to visit a jazz café together and brows through the records while _talking shop_ with the café owner probably acted like icing on the cake. Angelina also started to attend music lessons as extra curricular activity at very young age, I think already in her preschool years. There are videos posted by her grandmother showing Angelina in the recording studio at the music school singing songs like _Hurt, Skyfall, Rolling In The Deep_ and _Someone Like You_ at the age of 6. In one of those videos (kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3TIonR5h8yAiZo ) we can even se her listening back to the recording and actively analyzing her own performance, frowning at things she doesn't like, and thinking about improvements that can be made.

The blond was Mom. I would encourage you to see her sing an acapella version of another Billie Holiday song, 'I'm A Fool To Want You'. I think questions of how she maintains pitch will be answered. The bare feet have a story of their own. Her family is well traveled and at least one grandmother is an artist. If fact the outfit she wore for her audition was a pattern from one of her grandmother's paintings, Angelina sewed it herself. She started singing at 11/2 years old and has been listening and singing to a lot of old jazz off of KZbin. I think she is a marvel. I am sure others have written all of this ahead of me so I'll just say I hope the industry doesn't ruin her, as they have with many talented young people. Until the next time.

A good place to comment on the age error related to that vid. Caleb, you noted her one tooth, here at 7 well, she did have a bit of the other). The vid of 'I Who Have Nothing" mis-identified her as being 6 by the original poster. But you can see her teeth are more grown in, match the tooth pattern of her last Norway's Got Talent performances. So this was done at about her 8th birthday. Like any factual error introduced on the internet, of even in academic literature, it is nearly impossible to eliminate. Brenda, it's no fault of yours.

Good comments about her ability to hear inflections. Some psychologists call this the "integrative" function of the brain, where perceptions are processed into concepts. There's a recent interview where she said her mother was trying to get her to sing, 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star', and she said basically, no, I want to sing jazz. In fact, there's a short clip showing her in a crib at the age of 1-1/2 years, singing a short riff from Whitney Houston. Check out her rendition of "Summertime" in the Norway Got Talent finals.

Yes. She is the real deal. Try ‘Summertime’ from the same competition. I have an old double LP with ‘Ella & Lois’ singing the whole opera. Yes - it’s an opera. And was emazed of her ability to mimic most of Ella’s performance. What a great sense of rythm’s. For a while some said; she’s just a mimic. Like a parrot. So what’s wrong with learning from Ella ? In the meantime, she’s stepped ahead and has the ability to make most songs ‘her own’. BUT always a bit of jazz ! She’s also tried a Whitney song. OK I guess. BUT she can go really high AS well. We are AS exited AS you are to see where this will go. Shewas asked some time ago about her best memory so far: Being invited by Quincy Jones to sing on HIS birthday. Yes; she’s been around. And AGT stage brings no fear !

BTW, not only is she just 7 years old, but English is her third language. Nervous is not in her DNA.Her grandmother started playing jazz for her at 18 months old. When she went on AGT Champions she said that yes, she was 13 years old and she had been waiting Ten years to sing for Simon. Do the Math, lol. Her vocal covers are always informed by the original and then crafted to draw every ounce of emotion from the song.Check out Rusty Shackelford's list to keep going on the Angelina journey!

No, Caleb, no, not nervous, according to her. Her trick? When i sing, i go in a world within where everything is pure and musical!!!! I make a distinction between receiving a musical gift at birth and developping a musical talent, an aptitude that only hard work and trainig exercises MAY produce greatness. To me, artistic gift and talent have nothing to do, in a specific sense, with semantics. I wonder if you would agree with me concerning that distinction in vocal art. Thank you, Caleb, for your reaction! Will you react to more Angelina s songs in the future? I am a subscriber to your channel.

She met a young girl who owned no shoes so she gave her the ones off her feet. The young girl said she would pray for her daily. Since then, Angelina vowed to never wear shoes on stage until all children of the world had shoes. She would make special annotations on the lyric pages for her instrumentalist that she specifically wanted changed. I have to believe she was born with this. My son picked up an acoustic guitar, violin, electric guitar and was the only other in our church to play our music ministries harp and grand piano before he was 12 , immediately played them! Not 100% accurately for a few days however. My husband and I aren't musicians at all. I really believe some children just have "it". Look at Billie Eilish! What are your thoughts...
@mamatrop4 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the voice inflection and style Angelina has had to come from training herself after hearing the singers first. Maybe the younger they are exposed to music or certain artists, they are able initially to mimic, then this angel felt that grit and passion and her mind had to interpret it. Not sure, but Dimash had a similar story. He was taken to music lessons for half his school day then regular education for the other half. Sorry for the rambling, but I'd love to hear your take on this.

Wow, that is really special that she has chosen to do that. Also really interesting about your son! I think there is certainly a natural ability some people have, however I think only hard work and attentiveness can activate it :)

My guess is she was a good singer in her previous life, and continued that while she was on the other side. There is nothing unusual i her upbringing, that could make her connect the song to her emotions in the way she does.

Angelina Jordan - Angelina Jordan was born Jan 10 2006 in Oslo, Norway. She is currently 14 (7 in this performance) - She began singing at the age of one and a half - At 2 or 3 she discovered Jazz through KZbin videos and started studying all the greats from Jazz history. - Angelina always sings barefoot..... When Angelina was 6, she was traveling with her grandmother and met a poor girl with no shoes trying to make money on the streets. The girl complimented her on her pretty shoes, so Angelina took them off and gave them to the girl. She made a vow to always sing barefoot until all the children of the world could have shoes. To this day, whenever Angelina is performing in public, she sings barefoot to remind us that there are less fortunate people in the world that could use our help. There's more to the story & it's more touching. When Angelina was 9 years old she wrote a book about the story that can be purchased on her website. (angelinajordanofficial) - She has always been the driving force behind her own singing career. It was her that asked her mother to take her to Norways Got Talent, where she auditioned at 7 years old and went on to win the show at just 8 years old. - In an interview after the show, when asked what she was going to do with the prize money, the 8 year old replied, "I would like to give it to orphans that need clothes and shoes" - The reason you may not have heard of her is because her parents are very protective of her childhood. They do not want her to be thrust into stardom before she has a chance to grow up as a normal child, and finish her education. They allow her to do a few select shows (mainly private and charity events) with a couple public shows every year when she is out of school. Her mother said in an interview that they have turned down 90% of the offers that come in. I have heard they have turned down offers from many major record labels and even disney. - Angelina has covered more than 100 songs over the last 6 years. She always selects the songs herself... everything ranging from old classic jazz to modern pop. She is able to change her voice to match any song she sings and make it her own. She can even cover Amy Winehouse and Lana del Rey ect... like you wouldn't believe. - Angelina has collaborated with some very big names over the last few years... Quincy Jones, Mark Ronson, David Foster, and many more. All of which heard her covering their songs and were blown away by her talent. - Angelina has written three of her own original songs: "What is Life", "Shield" and "Oslo". (all are amazing...all can be found on youtube) I think Angelina Jordan is destined to be one of the greatest singers to have ever lived, I feel if she avoids the pitfalls of child success. Listen closely to any of her songs you can hear her greatness. She sings with a very natural style. She doesn't do any unnecessary runs, or big belty notes just for the purpose of showing off. She's humble & gentle & sweet She once said "When I sing I go into a magical world in my head", you can always hear the results of that as well as being brought into the songs. She has a great future ahead of herself God willing.

My personal opinion on how she developed such an ear to detail is this : she has grandparents from at least 3 different countries (Norway, Japan and Iran I believe) and the languages from those countries have very different frequencies. It's hard for example to learn perfect Japanese as an adult because we have lost our ability to hear some of the frequencies that language uses and can't always distinguish between sounds that are different to them but not to us. I guess the fact that very young she was exposed to 4 different languages including English from the songs she listened to that she gained the ability to hear a lot of details that are not apparent to most people with only 1 or 2 languages.

I will just leave you with this playlist that I have made of some (85) of my favorites, arranged in chronological order. You have seen her newest with "Bohemian", and her oldest with "gloomy" (not really her oldest, but first big live performance). This playlist is everything in between (not everything, but as I said, 85 favorites from a huge fan).... kzbin.info/aero/PL2v8kgVeo4EbYDVnRwObjETfWpXbzbgIO You can pick anything off this list and you are going to be impressed, but I recommend watching the other NGT performances, and "I Put A Spell on You" (age 9)....

Afaik her environment was not more musical than average, except for what she herself demanded. She got her granma to take her to jazz-cafe/recordshop and later she insisted on getting to sing in studio. I don't think she was getting any particular tutoring before school-age (6-7), but she did several studio-tryouts. She started later in an arts school, but she was obviously in a regular kindergarten, because there is a clip of her being thoroughly unimpressed by a christmas all song event. I'll leave you a few links and notes. I don't think these are particular interesting for vocal analysis, but they are interesting nonetheless: This is one of her earliest studio takes: Angelina Jordan rehearsal (Rolling in the deep) kzbin.info/www/bejne/g160pKOLi82li68 I don't think you can see any signs of particular coaching, only joy of singing. I think this is a good base-level to see how quickly she moved from being "just a child" singing at age 5-6 (talented and crazy about singing, but still a child), to a real artist, already at age 7-8. There must of course been several things inate, but I think most prominent her desire and commitment. The more you see from that age, the more you see, already then, she didn't leave anything to chance if she could avoid it. In this clip you can see her listening to herself afterwards, mostly goofing off, but also you get her sense interest in what's going on and relating to herself: Angelina Jordan in studio kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ6amWCBr7xonLM This is particular interesting if you know norwegian. She obviously doesn't know the lyrcis by heart and must read. She makes a mistake, I think mixing two lines, which they talk about after. You see her noticing this during, making a clear display of dissappointment, but it doesn't affect her singing at all: Angelina Jordan - I Who Have Nothing - Complete performance kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJu0i354pbuUm9U Here you see her at age 8 displeased by the tempo of the orchestra: Angelina Jordan rehearsal (At Last) Part 1 2014 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIbClZV7eNSSa8k I see you probably have the equipment for it, are you experienced in waveform analysis? There are some things I am interested to have a literal technical analysis of, regarding her frequencies.

Enjoyed your reaction! 😊 A few more that I would suggest, is what you've been suggested already - "I Put a Spell On You" when she was 9 or 10. And after that, I'd suggest either "A Million Years Ago" (Adelle cover) or "Born To Die" (Lana Del Rey cover), or both. Those she did when she was 12, and they really showcase her lower register which is amazingly textured and deep. Her timbre is just so warm and emotional.
