6 minutes in, and she mentioned being home schooled and feeling like that impacted her responsibility and drive. As someone who was home schooled, i actually REALLY resonated with this. I was home schooled until 7th grade and realllllyyyy struggled with this type of stuff too. I eventually dropped out of school (due to a lot of factors, but i think general neglect from my parents was a contributor). I got my GED, and I'm in a career i love now in corporate learning. But wow, was it a struggle to get here. In a lot of ways, shame was what drove me to do better. For years, i was so ashamed of my lack of education and career. You can overcome these types of things and develop these skills you're supposed to build up as a kid/teen. I think it just requires drive and the ability to imagine a better future for yourself.

What I hear from her and have from the get go is generational poverty mentality. No one ever learned finances and no one has ever cared to do so. The mindset is transferred to the next generation who (typically) vigorously procreate and propagate future poverty mentality. And the cycle rinses and repeats every 20 years. I see and hear it almost daily in my clinic when patients tell me about their financial woes. She is the prototypical person I see in that situation. Hope she breaks the cycle

2:05 When I was graduating high school about twenty years ago the student loan people kept harassing me to sign up for as many as I could. They told me I could use them to pay for school and books...and housing. And cars. And computers and clothes and food and anything else I could dream of it was my free money. Thankfully I took none out and went to the local JC for a few years instead. Predatory loans.
@wattoucheng8 ай бұрын
Same for me: when I went to college 10 years ago, I already had some money set aside from waiting tables and doing odd jobs here and there. When I got to college I also started a paid-internship during the afternoon and a job at a local real estate company at evenings to supplement my income during the weekends/holidays. I was offered loans several times; the interest rates were atrocious though and I never took one. Ultimately, I managed to get a degree in Law debt-free.

I just went back to school for my masters degree. I didn't get offered any financial aid other than student loans. Thankfully I was able to pay for this semester out of pocket without having to touch them. But I can see how young and naive students can hit accept on $12K for student loans in a semester. Makes me so upset how easy the government makes it for people to fall into debt.
@Madchris88288 ай бұрын
What's crazy is that the government money lent out is taxpayer money too, so everyone loses when people don't pay it back. Its a pretty stupid and predatory system imo
@ThatGuy-nv7cx8 ай бұрын
The problem is the normalization of the 12k for a semester. If you mix in community college and then 1 year at a state school, you shouldn’t be paying more than 20k (and that’s before financial aid or scholarships) for a bachelors degree, which is extremely easy to make in 4 years of summer jobs/part time jobs. Unless you’re going to a Harvard or Yale level college, every college is essentially the same when it comes to employers.
@CM-zl8iu8 ай бұрын

I may be old-fashioned, but I am strongly against credit cards for college students and those younger. It's too easy for them to accumulate debt through interest, and in the worst case, incur late fees. Learning budgeting skills is best achieved by living with cash. Kinda feel like Caleb was a little harsh on Abigail at the end, but maybe that's just trying to give tough love. To me, she just feels extremely young, inexperienced, and has a pretty weird sounding family dynamic that probably doesn't promote a lot of financial knowledge. But she's here and thinking about this so early despite all of that, which I feel puts her ahead of so many other guests. I know at this age, I was pretty dumbstruck by all the numbers flying around and didn't really understand jack about finances. I can highly recommend talking a year off between her school now and dental hygiene to clean the slate. You student loans usually stay in deferral, the debts gone, have a semester saved up. Then go back, work part time to live and save for the next semester. It puts things back 1 year but in the grand scheme of her life it will lead to such a higher quality of life. I was in a similar place after college and it took 3 years to pay the debt and then I cash flowed university.

@TonyCox13518 ай бұрын
I agree it’s a good career path for her, but she needs to learn some work ethic first. Sounds like this girl has never really applied herself at anything or excelled in her life. She needs to take a year off school, work her ass off at a regular job, feel what it feels like to have a schedule and responsibilities and to be dependable, and then once you have that foundation go back to school and pursue a real career. At least that’s my .02 cents
@raeorion8 ай бұрын
@@TonyCox1351 I think that could work but I think if she can follow Caleb's advice and finish school while she works her ass off at a job I think she's going to be a lot better off. Luckily, her school is incredibly cheap and dental hygiene is a very short program. I think she can do both, especially since she's not paying rent right now. It really seemed like she genuinely had never been confronted with the numbers. No adult in her life has ever sat down with her and had a conversation like the one that she had. I hesitate to be too ambitious with anyone just because it's SO rare that anyone takes advice and makes those changes in their own, but I want to hold out hope because I saw that emotion in her reactions, she was willing to take accountability, I think she can do, she just has to take the steps 🥲

The mistakes she’s making are so bad but so common. A good handful of people I know from college did the same thing she did - routinely took out student loans for fun money. They’d also take out loans every year from our university tech shops to buy the latest Macbooks, iPads, and other electronics because they didn’t have to start paying on those loans until after we graduated. It’s sad how many young adults are mislead into thinking loans are like free money. The only good thing is most of them will learn from those mistakes and wont pass on the same misinformation to their kids, and a quarter of them will learn the right information and pass it on.

1:07 This is one of the reasons I love this channel. Caleb looks at the signs, not just the finances. This girl has so much anxiety about how much money she's bringing in that her body is reacting even if she's trying to be calm about it. I've been there, trying to open about situations were you might have lost a job, or you don't know how to take the next step to get out of a hole is HARD! Good on her for taking a step towards getting help and good on Caleb for helping guide so many of us. 13:38 Omg she's only 20? Good on her for getting help early! My parents never guided me on finances even when I asked so I was financially illiterate in my early twenties and it was a hard lesson. I understand why she may seem blasé about bills coming in now, because if your parents never talk to you or share what types of things you should be doing, it's hard to figure out a schedule and keep yourself in routine. Especially if she doesn't have a typical job were she's given some structure.

Financial success is 10% "literacy" and 90% tools/mentors/resources to help build/mold/maintain behaviors. It was too heartbreaking watching the end of this episode. She clearly wants different but without help to address the behaviors that got here where she is, there's little to no hope.
