@@CharleyCarey it doesnt really matter if he cant even speak the language that the locals speak. how can you consider yourself part of a culture if you cant even interact with 99% of people from that culture? he's clearly from one of those western families that permanently move to asia for jobs/military but keep their western lifestyle and traditions (hence his perfect English accent)

As a Hong Kong person, here is my analysis of why many non-Chinese people who born and raised in Hong Kong do not know how to speak Cantonese. 1.Hong Kong is English friendly community. Hong Kong is bilingual education. Most of people can process basic English conversation such as one to ten. This reduces the motivation of non-Chinese learning Cantonese. 2. Most of the non-Chinese parents send kids to international schools. They receive education in English in most of the time. Also, their classmates do not speak Cantonese. This loses an ideal environment and time to learn Cantonese. 3. The locals are not willing to communicate with non-Chinese in Cantonese. Time is money. It is famous that Hong Kong people are impatient and walk fast. The locals do not want to spend lots of time to listen your babbling Cantonese and analysis what you are talking, so they would rather use English to complete the whole conversation. It is difficult to learn Cantonese for non-Chinese who want to learn after growing up. Thus, the only chance that non-Chinese learn how to speak fault Cantonese is to send their kids to local schools.

What Hong Kong people walk fast!!!! People are so slow because they have their heads buried in their phones. I have to walk on the road because of how slow people walk. Personally I find the speed that people do things at to be a snails pace. Lack of speed is the main thing I hate about living in HK. Everything is slow. Banks, supermarkets, walking, eating, buying something at stores.

Thank you for speaking the truth! I am the same as the man in the video, 17 years in Hong Kong but don't know Cantonese. It's not a big deal when you're young but nowadays all the jobs ask you for Cantonese, Mandarin, and English... My family left Hong Kong and I found employment just fine in my new country, but my classmates who stayed all had difficulty unless they had connections :(

as a hong konger here! im not very good at explaining but if you’re willing to read this, i’ll explain why housing can be so expensive and why not everyone raised in hong kong can speak cantonese cantonese is actually VERY hard and has thousands of different letters, different words with different pronounciation, since english and canto are rather different, its really hard to learn for most who have been taught english before cantonese, but its not exactly impossible, its possible, just hard. my parents taught me cantonese before english, yet my cantonese still is horrible lol housing is so expensive because we dont have alot of land, yet we have tons of people, despite the buildings, not all houses are a reasonable price and can be raised to very high prices, which sadly is common, for reasons im afraid i do not understand, but i have tried to offer all the knowledge i know for now

That's the problem with many foreign people who grow up in Hong Kong. Their parents enroll them into international schools, where most students will only communicate in English or Mandarin for the rest of their time in there. (Hong Kong people predominantly speak Cantonese!) Thats how one could spend their entire youth in a place yet not learn to speak the local language at all. Worse, there are whole communities formed by foreigners moving into rich areas of Hong Kong where residents seldomly communicate in Cantonese (sorta like Chinatowns in non-Asian countries), resulting in culture barriers within the city. Frankly, this feels like cultural segregation.

That's actually pretty nice for that price compared to other ones shown on the tube as he's got decent windows and greenery outside ... and the kitchen is pretty decent ... small apartment , but not a shithole .

Rent prices are completely insane in some countries 😮 My apartment is like 4 times the size of this apartment and I pay less. It shouldn't be allowed to let people pay so much rent. Adequate housing is a human right!

In case anyone is wondering, if he is living anywhere near where the guy ask him about how much he pay for his rent. $1200 USD is a bargain. Market price should be closer to $15000 or $1900 USD. And it is not in anyway small by HK standard.

As a Hong Konger, trust me if you don't wanna pay so much for your house... get some kind of government job. Many of them offer government housing as a benefit and I've lived in a government issued apartment my whole life up until I moved to the US two years ago.

Being an 'almost ready to retire' American, I would not mind living like this for awhile, if it meant a chance to travel and live in Hong Kong. Whether that be anywhere from a few weeks to maybe a year or so. But I could not do it long term. The $1200 (USD) rent is insane for that small of space, and is a lot for any studio or 1-bedroom in the states. But it's the average USA rent these days.

The people who are saying "it's so embarrassing that he lived there all his life but doesn't speak the language" makes me really sad because I was raised there (born in Australia), my dad is from Hong Kong and his main language is Cantonese but he speaks some English. I'm not fluent in Cantonese, but I understand what people are saying if they speak to me. My mum is born(?) and raised in Australia but her parents are both from Hong Kong. Hong Kong makes it easy for those that are children being raised there, in fact, many of my past classmates are fluent in Cantonese and many of them are very talented. In my personal experience, their parents would enroll them into various different classes so that they perform well. The majority of those who don't have like 4 classes per week and don't play an instrument were stunted in their learning. While there are many international schools, most children that go to said schools won't have the same education experience as those going to local school since it is more difficult there in local than international.

As a Hong Kong person, it's true that rent money is expensive and an average flat are very small. You need to be very rich just to live in a house as big as the average Americans

I don't understand how you could be born and raised in a Country- and not speak the language. I guess it shows just how motivated the people from Hong Kong are.. and maybe alot of them speak English. I'd love to visit there 🥰

Well you can be born and raised in Canada and not speak any English if you live in Montreal. Not every country is the same. Westerners live in a bubble in HK and many other cities across Asia and have their own schools, neighborhoods, communities, clubs, workplaces etc. It's very easy to have an English speaking life there. Plus many of the locals speak English anyway as it is part of the curriculum as a former British colony.

Not much different than NYC except it's less expensive than NYC. This apartment in NYC would cost between $3,000 - $ 4200 USD a month plus utilities. His place is small but works for a single person
