Thanks. To be fair, most people fill in the blanks with their own narrative. Whatever they don’t see in a video or in a movie leaves a lot of room for the imagination to complete the story. It’s more of a reflection of the viewer than the presenter.

One of the things I admire about Shawn is that he is always calm and respectful. You can see this most clearly in his relationship with Cali; there is no frustration or irritation with her, simply enjoying her companionship, and I could imagine it was similar with his girls when they were younger. The response to people's concerns about Cali also demonstrates these qualities; there's no defensiveness or irritation, rather a willingness to see the good intention behind viewers' comments and questions. The world would be a much more civilised place if we had more people with Shawn's temperament.

I was asking Dennis Jansen that question because it seemed like he either didn’t watch or pay attention to what was said during the video about animal’s coats and how they protect dogs. As far as the desert comment, I’ve lived in the desert before in Kuwait and I definitely wasn’t wearing shorts and t-shirts for extended periods out in the sunlight. I also tried to stay in the shade as much as possible during the day even when I was wearing long sleeves and pants.

As a groomer “leave her coat, don’t clip her” she only needs hand stripping occasionally to pull out the bulk, their coat will grow back if clipped properly but often will never lay the same. Grab some lectaide or recharge or similar dog electrolyte solution to add to her water on hot days, you won’t regret it and it’ll come in handy if she ever gets vomiting or diarrhoea. She’s always in good hands, I never doubt that for a second but thanks for the update it’s always scary when something happens to them.

Cali is well cared for. I adopted an 8yo Golden Retriever dumped at a shelter. He has hip displasia, can still swim like a champ tho! I live in FL and he gets shaved every 3 months. He had hot spots all the time if not bone dry in 10 mins from swimming. He's 12 now, no more hot spots from being wet after swimming and obv an inside senior dog. He can't stand for the shave, groomer works w him on floor, rolling him around. He loves it. Each his own on Golden's. My sugar face is noticable perkeri after a shave. Plus no matt's pulling on his senior skin. Swam for 2 hrs today, short fur, totally dry and snoring.

Shawn you are absolutely correct in leaving her coat alone. The coat shields from heat as well as the cold. We used to give our dog water with ice cubes in the brutal heat.

Sir! I have worked with dogs and horses, back in the military, then I found Monty Roberts. He changed my view on training methods and I have continued my love of the behaviour study into K9's, equines, also worked a fair bit with camels. From what I have witnessed, on both your chanels, you have given Cali the correct boundaries, the care, love and compassion; that is required. The bond you have, her trust in you and the balance attention seeking. She is a wilderness dog, of course there are risks, for her; and you. Your answers were valid in my humble opinion, and I would suggest that both you, I and quite possibly even some of those making comments have had a mild form of heat stroke over the last few months. The main thing here is, that she seems to be back to her energetic and playful self. I take my hat off to you sir, thank you for your work, and the way you are with that fine beauty. m

Speaking of feeling guilty. i didn't but...two of my dogs got into a fight several yrs ago. They were and still are best of buds. BUT I discovered that one..gets so excited and wound up when seeing other animals or people or whatever...she starts barking like crazy. During this..they were outside in the backyard and chasing a squirrel. When she gets excited she just starts snapping at anything around her. Really weird. But I think she snapped or bit my other dog and the game was on. I heard alot of barking and went out to check..and the hellion (what i call her now) was on the ground on her back. My other dog with only nubs for teeth..had her pinned to the ground with her tongue was hanging out (the one on the ground) with rapid panting..as in being exhausted. I grabbed her up and took them both to the kitchen and laid them on beds..and cleaned them up some..gave them pain meds ..jumped in the shower and took them both to vet. the hellion..that was on the ground...had a few puncture holes on her tummy and scraped all over from head to toe. My other dog..which shes larger but nubs for teeth...had a ripped ear. She got like 5 stitches i think. Also two of her front teeth were ripped out. Overall...the hellion i think got the worst of it. She has LARGE big canines too. But she was bruised head to toe and laid around for a week. My other girl..nubby...was back up and being herself next day. I have yet to figure out how all that happened. I have a third dog but she seemed to have only watch. She didn't have blood on her anywhere. So since then..I keep a very close eye on the hellion especially if she's barking. I also put cameras up now which also records what's going on. and my two dogs are still friends. like sisters that got into a big fight. but I now know the limits of my dog. why i dont feel guilty..because i never seen any signs of her being this way. it was when that occurred i started watching her actions VERY close when she got excited. seen her snap at another dog since....and then i pieced it all together. Its been yrs now and we are all doing grea.t they are all getting older and becoming seniors now.

Hey Shaw! This is your channel and you can do and show whatever you want. If someone does not like the content, they can just click off😁. Most of us ❤️ Lil Cali in a hugh way and care much for her. Our furbabies are family and we want to share their agonies and triumphs. What we do for them may not work for someone else but it works for us. I have never seen a short hair golden🤔 I do know, and in most cases their coat accommodates the weather. She is extremely active and we'll 💞 who became a little overheated because she probably forgot to take a needed water break🧐. Thank you for sharing and it gives us knowledge on what to watch out for. I don't know about that in all cases. I have a Havanese and she struggles with the heat and does way better with short hair in the hot summer. Same deal in the winter. She shivers if her hair is shorter so we cut for the seasons. Works for our breed.

As a retired groomer, that is one of the few requests I would NOT accept ... shaving down of a double coated dog breed. The undercoat should never be removed except for whatever comes out naturally when brushing these breeds.

If anyone who’s been following your channel knows anything, they should know you try and do what’s right always. The thick coat also protects her from mosquitos and other similar biting bugs - unless vet recommended, animals should not be shaved. Doing so screws up their natural ability to self regulate.

As a several Labrador owner/companion for my life, I can 100% see you would ALWAYS do what is best for 'any' dog not just your own. But I know you have to put to rest some of the concerned folk, and I agree, they were only thinking of what they could do to help. Once heat stroke has occurred, it's likely that she will be more susceptible in the future. People are the same. Heat stroke and Heat exhaustion are no joke and can become reoccurring with lower heat conditions in the future once your body has lost its ability to cool itself through a previous heat episode. Shaving as you stated is a bad think for Goldens.

I have had two golden retriever's over the last 19 years and I have brushed them and use three different types of groomers brushes for sure. We are down to only one golden now. One brush is for the undercoat, another for the tail and longer fur and yet another for the regular coat. It's very important to use proper brushes and if done correctly they enjoy their brushings. I always have watched their breathing and even though they love to lay in the sun for a little bit they always go where there is shade eventually. I watch them like a hawk and make sure they don't start panting too hard. They are wonderful dogs and love to always please their owner. Where I go they'd go it's that simple lol. After Cali had her heat stroke it made me realize some day's I spend quite a few hours outside working in the yard and now I watch Harley even more closely. Big KISSES and HUGS to Cali for coming back so well from such a terrible experience. Cali has an awesome daddy and you took excellent care of her for sure!!! Cali always seems so busy running and chasing for her toy and this spring and summer the HEAT / Temperature has been soooooo HOT and it has been relentless for sure. I have kept our Golden indoors a lot because he overheats easily and he gets frustrated but I let him out off and on during the day and after dinner he runs a bit and then lays under a big tree in the yard. Thank you Shawn for YOUR update on Cali and I pray that other's take it to heart on what we need to do and be aware of for sure. God's blessings to you both!!!

It's always so hard to tell when something is wrong with our dogs. They will often hide their weakness/sickness as a matter of instinct. And of course I've felt a little helpless because they just can't tell you what's wrong. Cali is a young strong girl and I hope we have many more years of her stories for us to see.

She's well loved and taken care of, that's evident. A very happy dog living a dog's life. I have a couple of golden's and never shave them, just grooming and deShedding every now and then

I have a golden retriever mix. He is hot natured even in the winter here in South Carolina. He is 12 yrs old his name is lucky. I'm so happy Cali is ok now . she has captured the hearts of all your subcribers. I love her and send prayers up for her to remain healthy and no more heat stokes !! God bless!

I can't help but laugh when in a video, something dare happen, that all of the "professional arm chair" people pop up with the expert answer...the arm chair vets, doctors, nurses, lawyers, judges, teachers, etc. I always get a good laugh from them. Like you said...you only film a few minutes of the day in the life, not 24/7. You are always so gracious in your apply to the knuckleheads. Great channel and videos.

Her coat protects her… plain and simple… veterinary nurse a long time.. drove me crazy when clients had full coated dogs shaven🤦🏼‍♀️

Hello Shawn and Cali from Australia, it was not a stroke, just heat stroke, a bit less serious but just as scary for you! I would imagine she would drink lots of water because you have so much water laying around, but maybe she didn't that day for some reason, I myself have had heat stroke as a child! As long as nothing else serious happens she should live a long happy life there with you, she is a very lucky girl! Give her a hug for me please! Good to know all is okay! Yes, as much as Cali loves being in the water, it's hard to think of her being dehydrated ... just an unusual day I guess. But she's still quite young, 4 years old if my memory serves correctly, so she will live a long healthy life with her loving family.
