What the 122TM said and what is true are two differnt shoes. The WZ was max 200m away and the 122TM tried to sidescrape out, no way he was unspotted. Maybe the 122TM died before his sixth went off but there is no way he was unspotted.

With just one magazine it can take out two tanks. Doesn't mater that the aim time, gunhandling and dpm is bad, tanks like this shouldn't be in the game.

I agree with your sentiment, but the Caliban is not a good example of that. This thing is stupid powerful in its area of playstyle, peek-a-boom, but pitifully weak anywhere else. It has one of the highest, if not THE highest, penetration in the game for a tier 8. Top that off with 600 alpha is stupid, there really isnt any way to make this tank balanced enough for plays to play with and against. This thing has too much pen on both HE and AP rounds, too much damage with the autoreloading mechanic, and too much armor for any other tank statistics to matter.

Yeah, I remember when I was watching this stream live I thought the WZ just guessed his flanking position properly. But the leaving/re-entering the cap and especially killing the unspotted 122TM (which I didn't notice him say in chat at the time) leads me to believe it was a stream snipe. That said, if you're going to stream, that happens, it's the drawback. GG QB, great review as always

The player even said he was unspotted, meaning he must have sixth sense and knows he did not get spotted, so there is little reason for a player to assume that a person is there, plus even if we give him the benefit of doubt and say he got lucky, he still reacted incredibly quick to a tank showing up behind him, remember he has to turn his entire tank around and had to do it immediately after shooting the 122 without knowing that he needed to do that...

I just watched Claus Kellerman's review on this tank (he hates it) but all throughout it he would most always fire both shots and then start complaining about the reload. I think it should be treated like a double barrel tank where you have the big damage potential but most of the time it is wiser to only shoot one of the shells.

Interesting little thing to consider about this tank: it's name. Caliban was a feral, sullen, misshapen creature in Shakespeare's "The Tempest". He's (the protagonist) Prospero’s rather dark, very earthy slave, and is frequently referred to as a monster by the other characters. I genuinely feel like WG were flat out taking the piss with this tank. Especially by putting it in the Loot Boxes.

I find using the premium shells works best in it. Now for me its not a problem because I keep tens of millions of credits on hand plus I have a premium account so shell cost is not a problem. Some people won't like playing that way. When with friendlies and you can keep to just firing one shell at a time its not a bad tank but if you are forced to fire two shells or just do it for fun you are completely useless for quite a while as you reload which can be a death wish if alone. This thing ammo racks easily too so you need your crewman to get Safe Stowage perk. Aiming time is bad so that's another issue. Also its slow without a Turbo Charger. I put one on mine to get into positions faster. These are the downsides to the tank.

Yep, that's basically how it is. Your second shell isn't there for performing assassinations outside specific situations. It's there so you can hold the threat of that second shell over your enemies and really make them think twice about interrupting you while you are reloading.

The WZ was either watching your stream or running that I-spy-U hack that makes all the buildings, mountains and bushes transparent. He can see all the tanks in his field of view, even it unlit or behind solid objects. Claus and I believe one other CC has videos on it.

There is literally no way for any player to see tanks that the spotting system says aren't spotted. The server won't send that info to your client until the server decides that you can. Making stuff see through on your client just affects rendering, you can't trick the server into saying "this bush isn't here and the enemies 30% camo rating doesn't exist, now show me where he is". I get the impression you don't really understand the spotting system and why hacks wont help you get around it. More likely WZ was just watching stream or simply got spooked.

In all honesty - with changes to HE, damage is too inconsistent to honestly call it good. You get similar or better damage potential with plenty of tank destroyers, without the need to get close to the enemy, and without suffering horrendous reload and being less at the mercy of RNG. It is kind of a meme tank - basically a shotgun tank - it looks hilarious for what it is, but gimmicks it has will mess you up more often than help you.

@@loboptlu exactly. They needed to change the splash mechanics to lower wrap around damage. HE on a turret would do so much extra to weak top plate armor when the reality is it wouldn't redirect that much energy down to do that damage (artillery shells on a downward trajectory still could). It's all about the physics. Open air will allow more explosive energy to dissipate in other directions. I like to use the example of shooting under a tank. The hard ground absorbs some, but the majority of the force transfers up so it should do more damage. Hitting the side should do next to no damage on the top of the tank because the energy isn't transferring there. Finding a way to adjust down wrap around damage is what needed to happen. The HE radius needs to take in to account the amount of open air space it has to transfer energy too.

Not sure what I think about this thing. I think I am more focused on how to counter it, then playing it. Lots of reviewers are hating this tank, but I am also seeing that the other reviewers constantly firing both shots, which is pretty often a terrible idea. Loading both rounds and then focusing on using it as a single shot tank is just better, all the way around.

QB I had a good roll for my 75 boxes getting this tank, the Tornvagn, 122TM and the T56, I played them all for a couple of games and had fun with this one. One AP shot score 975 damage and you are correct it was fun. I also got nailed by these when I was in other vehicles and they were tough to take down but I got it done or died. This might become a platoon tank, you guarantee your own support which isnt otherwise reliable in randoms and the better players will be the ones doing this. It also mitigates my top tier solo heavy concern.

The game in Safe Haven, it was so satisfying securing the 2 new lootbox tanks consecutively, first aiming at the cupola of the M4Y and then clapping the side of the Tornvagn. That match was the funniest for me. Edit: It's hard to believe that the Caliban is a HT, not a TD. Several times that I thought Caliban + GSOR '8 platoon was a funny TD combo until I'm reminded that the Caliban is a HT..

As for the setup, I think I would use vstab + improved aiming + vent on the second slot instead of optics. That slot would be fully reserved for maps such as prokorovka where no matter what you do there would be some kind of sniping that would occur and in that situation I'd rather have better handling rather than extra top speed or vision (since you will never be suitable for vision play anyway)

Auto-preloader should have an alternate mode to prevent the 2nd shell to be fired, X key to on/off for example. The loading indicator is too small to focus while the big circle only show intraclip reload.

I'm really enjoying it, it's a hilarious combination of absolutely helpless if you ever have to dip into that second shot in reserve, and completely terrifying. And since as you pointed out it's not really averaging very high damage numbers, it's more of a just quirky fun tank rather then an OP meta tank, which, IIRC you yourself said is what you miss about premiums when they were just a bit weaker then same tier techtree tanks but with some quirky unique mechanics.

I think in the last game you played quite predictably. That flanking move, in my opinion, cost you the game. When both of you proxy spotted each other, you pulled back. However, you didn't take into account the 10s spotting so he can clearly see you move in that direction. A different approach that I'd suggest would be to trick him into thinking you are going to flank, turn back, and rush the shot asap so you can kill him before he traverses. Although I don't play WOT, that's what I came up with my 3 years of experience playing the Wot Blitz version.

The WZ was 100% stream sniping but what you probably should have done was go the the middle rock curve. It would only expose your front hull so when you poke out, he might have tried to take a chance and shoot but if he ricocheted then you could have killed him. Just an idea

Tbh i'm happy that i bought 25 Boxes and got the Tornvagn and 122 TM from them, not the Caliban. The Caliban looks like an extremely situational tank that is difficult to truely master and can't box itself out of tricky situations on it's own. The HE-Rework also hinders it dealing with enemies from the front if firing HE. I myself am and never was good with derp tanks >,< And i've already watched some reviews from other CCs that call the tank the "true definition of Meme cast in steel". From all the 5 of the Tier8 Premiums the Caliban, for me at least, would have been the only true nightmare to draw XP So yeah... I'm glad not having get it dropped into my Garage. And i've fought enough of them already that i can say that their HE bite is only a thread once you allow it to nibble on your bacon. And it is, in a straight up frontal fight, more often then not helpless against you. Only the AP-shells bite hard. If you, once again, Allow it to bite you. And you can manage to stay away from it rather well since the Caliban's mobility is not the best.

TBH Its perfectly profitable with APs. Each AP costs as much as GSOR AP, but deals twice the damage, and can pen IX, or X tier easily. Im rolling almost full gold, and trading 2x600 vs 1x500 with most X tiers around the corner, while earning 30k to 60k netto credits. Right now my bad battle looks like 1700dmg (3 shots), while my good battle looks like 3200dmg (8 shots), with the average being 2200dmg per battle currently. The only thing you have to keep in mind is to always stay around some non-magazine allies, who can cover you. XVM is highly recommended (to find a skilled ally). Edit: right now I screwed up, died on a flank filled with muppets, dealt only 1700dmg, won, gained 65k credits brutto, 43k netto (+6500 credits into prem vault).

It's tanks like this with the long reload that makes me with there was a Loader Skill or piece of equipment in the game which replaces Gunrammers for Autoloader Vehicles. It would reduce the interclip reload but not the intraclip reload.

QB, please call out the WG changes to the credit bonus based on collections. Past years I have spent on boxes to get the .5 bonus day one. It may have been explained in the holiday ops video and notes, but if so, I missed this change. It is so much harder to get to the full credit's bonus this year.

people keep saying this tank sucks because of "he nerfs" well if anything this tank gets more benefits then downsides from the HE changes due to having 180mm of HE pen. you can doubletap the side armour of any tank in the entire game, unlike the shitty tech tree derps that have subpar 70-90 HE pen without turrets and without autoreloading, armour, or gun angles.

Kinda want it, just for when I'm playing in platoons, because I remember what the KV2 was like at tier 6 in a platoon. But I think there are several other premium tier 8s I'd rather play solo for credits or crew training that'll feel way more consistent.

The Caliban is awesome and perfect for dealing with lightly armoured tier X tanks. You can see the players hesitating whereas before they wouldn't really fear tier 8.

I'd love to see this take up a role as a flex killer, or more favorably an EBR killer. Lie in wait and devastate those fast tanks that like to relocate to be most effective. If this can surprise a Leopard, it's going to be glorious.

I love this tank for how unique it is, and honestly, despite how much damage it can do and the pen it has, it isn't overpowered, same with the Tornvagn which is like a T34 but worse, and the M-IV-Y has a somewhat thick turret, its only specialty is the tracks, it doesn't do great in any category I find. I would say I am actually proud of Wargaming, but can't since the 3 new tanks are still not available in the premium shop for everyone else who just wants the tanks, not the boxes.

I get the desire for them to be in the premium shop, but buying 50 boxes is like buying one of the old tank bundles with a tank and a bunch of other add-ons we don't really need just to inflate the price. My bigger complaint is I couldn't buy 50 boxes. I could buy 25 for $40 ($1.60/box) twice or 75 for $100 ($1.33/box) once. 50 boxes for $70-75 ($1.40-1.50/box) would have been the ideal balance for me. But the other stuff isn't a bad investment. The gambling aspect also comes in. I only bought 25 boxes and I got a tier 8, 3 skins, and 4 other minor premiums. I got lucky. If I wanted a 2nd tank, I'd only need 45 more boxes to guarantee it. It's high pressure sales, but if you can afford it, you can get some awesome deals here and it's arguably one of the most cost effective ways to spend money on the game. And the tanks all seem well balanced which is a huge plus.

@@riffbw one thing to look at when getting the boxes, you will have plenty of gold to purchase any tank from the advent calendar of your choice, so more premiums, and or more exp to free exp passed more then a few tanks to speed up or finish a grind, so I think no matter what, they are worth getting depending on how you look at it, unless you are buying them specifically for one thing, then that is not good for sure

The only way to play this tank is as a mid-range sniper if you try to brawl or get too close to the action you will be wiped out very quickly.

if you are top tier then yeah the HE ammo is the right choice but when low tier it's premium ammo all the way, since you don't have the accuracy or penetration to do enough damage and hit weakspots

When I saw your first review of this tank I wanted it badly, but I forgot others would have it as well lmao. I'd have one Caliban on the enemy team rush me and clip me and kill me, they'd die doing so (or survive) and then that's the game for me... I don't specifically hate the tank since I'm expecting their numbers to drop later on.

Just saw a caliban faced off the FV4005 today, 4005 did 600+ damage on a none penetrating hit on a caliban, and the caliban did nearly 1700 amount of damage back to the 4005. The premium boomstick is really making a name for itself really quick.
