You have to compress the phone books "equally" (like with rubber bands) to be a halfway decently fair first. Then, shoot from a prone position if you're going to set em' on the ground like that to get an even angle . Out of all of those shots, I wanted to see the 357sig. I have to say I did not expect the 9mm to do better than the 40 S&W. Liked the whole idea of this test. Nice video!!!

Ambiguous and unscientific. Angle of shot and alignment of phone books plays big part. Reverse the bottom shots to top shots with 357. Sig and 45 acp and then see what penetration is. This is too biased to be of any use.

Please use 165GR FMJ when doing penetration vids for .40. The 165s have a considerable velocity increase and the front is smaller giving it better penetration properties.

you have to have the phone book strapped together, standing up straight with the board secured to them to make this test even close to worthy.
@billyjack66586 жыл бұрын
That test is 100% completely inconclusive are you going to redo it? Did you check out the 357 sig. from the ground like you did the 45? Why wouldn’t you just re-shoot the 357 sig. in the 45?

pages of book had seperation .... and the bullets were constructed totally differently.... this test shows nothing.... beautiful expansion by 40cal at a slower speed than 9mm LMBO..... obviously different bullet construction

To all the commenters telling them to use gelatin. HE'S TESTING BARRIER PENETRATION, NOT INCAPACITATION EFFECTIVENESS! They are two different things.

do the test with armor piercing .380.....that would out perform the 357Sig with a soft lead bullet

@Stephen Koppe nope ..... I am not.....actually I am very knowledgeable....and experienced..... bullet construction has enormous effect on penetration.....yup.....you my friend are obviously somewhat in the dark on the subject

@Stephen Koppe shut up so you won't look so stupid.... I think Fort Scott Ammunition has some videos with solid bullets....but everyone already knows that a solid bullet penetrates more than an expanding or soft lead bullet.....that is, everyone except you knows this.....glad I could help you

@Stephen Koppe you cannot be helped...have a nice evening ☺
@DeeMoback5 жыл бұрын
@Stephen Koppe you are too stupid to deal with...,,point is that if you were to handload a hard projectile in a 380, it would penetrate further than a soft projectile loaded in 9mm ..... what part are you missing? .... have you experienced a lobotomy?
@DeeMoback5 жыл бұрын
@Stephen Koppe depending on how soft the 357 bullet was, that could be true
@pmorin3137 жыл бұрын
Its clear the sig would have punched through...if the standard 9mm performed that well , same projectile plus another 400 fps no brainer....

It would be better to use a single phone book for each round.

I reload straight wall pistol. These thousands of caliber comparisons tickle me a little. Common sense will take you a long way down the road. If one loaded calibers to 1000 fps and used bullets at the max weight recommended for the pistols with exactly the same length barrels using the exactly same SHAPE bullets one would find that the heaviest bullet would IMPACT the hardest. Simple physics. Impact does not equal penetration as the target media and O. D. of the bullet have some variables. A .999 caliber bullet would impact harder than a .111 caliber bullet if both moving at the same speed. Think sledge hammer versus a tack hammer.

Thank you for the video and your time, but no sir, we couldn't tell anything from that very inconclusive video, I don't mean it in bad way, but even as a bare backyard test, that was horribly inconclusive

Should have done it separately for each caliber with own phone books. Inconclusive in my opinion.

I just happened to watch this video again I couldn’t help myself. It’s like watching a train wreck. With the effort you use to shut the whole experiment up why wouldn’t you just re-shoot. It makes absolutely no sense why would you waste your time

9mm 11-1200 fps. .40 same. .357 Sig 1300-1450 feet per second .45 ACP 7-850. 45 ACP is the biggest in the slowest 9mm and 40 same velocity really just different size bullets. 357 same size as 9mm but much higher velocity much hotter round

Chris Collins actually I don't have any firearms chambered in 380 at the moment. I have my eye on a bodyguard 380 though. thanks for watching.

+The Penetration Channel nice hope you get it man I was surprised that 45 out penetrated 40 I have a 45 and 380 I was thinking about getting a 9mm but its only 2mm longer than a 380 dont know how much better off I'd be in some ballistic gelatin testing ive seen 9mm penetretes maybe a few more inches than 380 not by alot.
@chriscollins18918 жыл бұрын
+The Penetration Channel also in tests I've seen the 38 special just packs a little more punch than 380 I think 380 would be worthy of your testing in fmjs and good jhps like gold dot or hydra shoks.
@ThePenetrationChannel8 жыл бұрын
Chris Collins I believe the general consensus is that a 9mm is the minimum acceptable self defense round. I however, believe that a 380 auto is sufficient for self defense. I've had a 380 before, and found that it performs similar to a .38 special.
@chriscollins18918 жыл бұрын
+The Penetration Channel mostly every thing I've heard is that 380 is the border line that someone should carry for protection the fbi and police agencys were issued 38 special for decades 38 just has a little more punch to it than 380 does in tests I've seen.
@boedude84968 жыл бұрын
again, the use of 180gr in the 40 makes the comparison invalid. light in 9 and 357, heavy in 40. try again using 135gr or 150gr.
@ThePenetrationChannel8 жыл бұрын
boedude the .40 S&W was designed with the 180gr projectile as its standard loading. the 357 sig was designed with the 125gr projectile as its standard loading. 230gr for .45, and 115gr for 9mm. therefore, if I lighten the projectile for .40, I would in turn have to use lighter bullets for 9, 357, and .45 in order to keep things fair. that is something I will do in a video coming soon. thanks for watching.
@boedude84968 жыл бұрын
the 180gr was what the fbi chose to use, for various and somewhat curious reasons. the cartridge was designed to shoot what the 10mm did, which went from 100 to 200gr. obviously performance/ballistics improve with lighter bullets. if the idea is to show the 9mm can be equal to or better than the 40, or present the 40 at its lowest potential then you succeeded. but you present a false picture of reality. heavy should be compared to heavy, light with light. it doesn't matter what the original design weight was 25 years ago.
@ThePenetrationChannel8 жыл бұрын
boedude ok. well if I run a 135gr .40 against a 90gr or 115gr 357 sig, both are light for caliber, and the 357 will still out penetrate the .40.
@boedude84968 жыл бұрын
actually the 357 and 40 are virtually equal. the 40 has a little more power but the 357 is more pointed so it evens out. but the 9 doesn't come close. but it would be a good video. i use underwood ammo. its expensive but it works very well in all calibers, no bad loads.
@SINESTERSERPENTSIXXX6 жыл бұрын
the speed of the round is the deciding factor here. since the 357 sig is the fastest in this group it should have the most penetration.
@robhamilton47366 жыл бұрын
9mm did not out perform the other calibers at all. Had the .357 sig traveled straight it would have continued well past the other rounds. Do an equal challenge. I have seen this exact test done on another channel and all the rounds did well but .357 Sig traveled much further than the .45 cal, the .40 cal, and the 9 mm did better than the 40 and 45 cal but not better than the 357 Sig

Sorry, but this is not a very good penetration test. It was not very consistent. You should have fired one bullet at the middle of one phone book only and each at exactly the same angle, preferably 90°. Not two bullets per book, plus the lower one probably at a different angle than the top one. Still interesting to watch. Thanks for the effort and keep making videos. Cheers.

Start using meat for your test. Preferably a pig from a butcher. I am sorry but these tests aren't useful, we need to see what these rounds do to meat.
