Been a long while since I've seen a trestle built, but it's the first time I've seen one built top down.

Great video Dave. Love watching a craftsman at work. You make the jigs look simple and easy to make. Love all the details and the end product.

Vacation up already? Time flys, doesn’t it? Great tutorial, as always. The most important take away for me is…..make sure you create a jig. They certainly make life easier. And help with the end results. Good to have you back for our Saturday viewing. See ya next time.

So many helpful tips in this one Dave, the jig with the offset to centre 12 x 12's genius, balsa foam carving and painting techniques, the use of watercolours and weathering powders, the list goes on. A re-watch video for sure. I am looking forward to making a trestle bridge when its time to do so. Your uploads are a go-to for pointers and tips. All the best. Brian @ The Angels

Incredible detail! Thank you for making this video, I am having a few issues with installing my low-boy and the support technique you used while spiking the rails was my, “duh!” moment. I’ll be sure to try it later.

Dave, Great job on the trestle bridge! I know I will have a few to build too. I look at the heavy O scale timber construction of Grand Central Gems trestles and the bents just seem to over power the trains and appear to be too heavy/out of scale. More like for mainline O scale and large engines. I have heard some people using S scale trestles to compensate for that. What is your opinion? The trestles you build appear correct for On30.
@ThunderMesaStudio3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what the S scale timbers measure out to in 1/48. I build my bridges to look a little light and airy by using slightly undersized timbers. For example, on a Santa Fe style standard gauge trestle, the timbers would be 12x12". I use 10x10" or even 8x8" to give a lighter, rickety look.

Nice solid looking trestle looks straight forward enough,which leads to a couple of questions. What bent spacing would you use for a more spindly looking less engineered trestle one where the question looks to be will the train make it? Bearing in mind it still needs to hold the train up safely. Also did ballast decked wooden trestles get built in the US or where they all open deck structures like yours?

Nice tutorial, I would like to build something like that one time. I just don't understand why these bolts are popular, the Japanese Wave OP-531 hexagonal bolts are flush on underside, no need to drill. How will be the river's water made? Resin or fake with gloss varnish?
@ThunderMesaStudio3 жыл бұрын
I'll be using Envirotex Light epoxy resin with a Mod Podge finish. Video on that process coming up!

Mr. Dave, as always a stunning tresie to go along with all the others. great tips and even a couple I hadn't thought bout.. love that template.. sure wish you would think bout making up a couple for public sales.. would be a nice addition to the store. looking forward to seeing the water video as well. Curious question if I may, what is the illustration board that you use, what is your preferred weight/grade * least I think that would be the correct term * ??

Dave... Question about the guard timbers. I've seen them inset a foot like you did and also flush with the edge of the bridge ties. Any particular reason why you chose the 1' inset? Thanks!
@rickdee67 Жыл бұрын
How much do I have to pay you for a couple of those footings? Kidding! But not, I would love to have some thing of yours on my layout. And I'm getting ready to build my first trestle. Actually, it'll be a pair of curved Trussell's one above the other side by side. I've already started practicing with a pencil on foam, but I need to get some of that Balsa phone.
