While flushing, filter the used oil with a coffee filter and reuse until it comes out clean. Add new and flush one more time, filter and run the engine/trans for a few minutes and pump out again, checking the fluid. If clean, put it back in. If not, repeat above. Takes time, but you will feel confident you have it clean without wasting much fluid. Good luck! Nice Delos could lend a hand.

A telescopic magnet would do the trick if there was room to get one in there. Lower it down and it should pull those bits out. Also if you have a drain plug in the bottom the transmission I would pull it out and JB weld a small magnet to catch anything left

Usually, vessels under 40' in our area (further up the coast - "Downeast") from where you were in Camden (mid-coast) have been hauled out for the winter prior to October. You were fortunate last fall, because our winter was relatively mild from what we've experienced in past years.

Lucky thing that clew ring didn't hit a couple of inches higher! Until it heals up you should just tell everyone you got it from a cutlass while you were repelling pirates who were attempting to board. In windy weather at anchor tie a 5 gallon bucket to either the anchor roads (if chain) or off the stern on a shortish teather , that may be a real help in steadying the boat. Works for me in a similar boat - Pearson 37 which sails all around at anchor. I don’t have anchor chain so I just throw it off the stern
@CalicoSkiesSailing3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, we were really skating around in all that wind. We find that our wind gen stabilizes the boat in high winds. Not sure the science behind that LOL
@sockeyevoyages88403 жыл бұрын
Ideally, the pivot point would be the anchor. I have struggled with sailing at anchor the most in light centerboard cat schooner. The mast in the bow really caught wind. Board down made it worse. Windage forward of your pivot point, the leading edge of your keel, like the two furled sails makes it worse. All the windage at the stern, particularly the higher wind turbine, helps keep you pointed into the wind. With all your gear aft, it was surprising to see. Some yawls will keep their mizzen up as a riding sail, like a weather vane. I've jury-rigged canvas as a riding sail. Locking a swinging rudder can help, similar to the bucket idea.
@CalicoSkiesSailing3 жыл бұрын
@@sockeyevoyages8840 Yea quite a bit of sailing on anchor, the wind was funneling a bit, changing directions as it raced down the valley walls, we were sailing more than normal :)

@@darth_taterz A magnetplug is great to have, but I have a feeling it becomes a tad difficult to remove it on a boat since it needs to sitt in the bottom of the oilpan/gearhouse, and that place on a sailingboat usually means flush to the inside of the hull deep down somwhere really cramped... 😜

were there no sheets on the staysail....hard to tell on the video? Could have been used to control the amount of flogging although that has to be preplanned.....I nearly killed myself on an uncontrolled flogging genoa sheet so even with sheets on, you have to be very careful. I doubt there will be enough stiffness in the stay sail furling setup to totally prevent some unwrapping in a good gusty blow. That was a very sobering accident and as you said could have been a much worse injury. Really enjoy your channel.....Maine looks just amazing.
